Spurrier to Resume Calling Plays

By Joseph White

ASHBURN, Va. - Steve Spurrier not calling plays? That sure didn't last long.

The Washington Redskins coach said Wednesday he will resume the role as primary play-caller after letting offensive coordinator Hue Jackson give it a try for the last two games.

"I just need to get more involved," Spurrier said. "I sort of stepped back a little bit and watched it a while. Hue's done an excellent job, but I need to be talking to the quarterback. Hue will still be very, very involved in the play-calling, and together we'll get it done."

Jackson asked for a chance to call the plays after a four-game losing streak in which the Redskins averaged just 15 points per game. Jackson's first try produced a 27-20 victory over Seattle, but Sunday's 181 total yards in a 20-17 loss to Carolina Panthers had Spurrier reconsidering.

"This is what Coach does," Jackson said. "This is what makes Coach go, is calling football plays. I just for a week wanted to take a shot at it, and it worked out. Last week, we had an opportunity to win, and unfortunately we didn't. That's the way it goes sometimes."

Spurrier said Jackson will probably stay on the sidelines and offer more direct input on the play-calling, rather than return to the upstairs coaches' box.

"He'll still probably call a bunch of them through me," Spurrier said.!

Notes: Spurrier said struggling RB Trung Canidate will start Sunday, in part because he is the healthiest alternative. Rock Cartwright and Chad Morton both have severe ankle sprains; both are listed as questionable. Ladell Betts is still out with a broken arm. ... C Larry Moore (foot) will miss another game, giving Lennie Friedman another start. ... Practice was held in the morning instead of the afternoon because of the storm system that moved through the East Coast.

I'm signed up to call the plays next week against the Saints and Channel 9 weatherman Topper Shutt is calling the plays week 13 against the Giants. We are still looking for someone to call the Dec. 12th game against the Bears, so feel free to apply.

Jee-zus, can't we do a single thing normally as a franchise?

We don't anything that is much different than any other franchise, except Spurrier is under the ultimate microscope, and every thing is played up to make him look like a goof. If every team was held under the same light, and their coach the national whipping boy, you would get the same stuff. It just all perception

AMEN ! Redman

I don't know Bubba, I understand your point, but revolving door running backs, no true GM, and the head coach calling the plays aren't what I call the norm in the NFL.

.

Has it occured to Spurrier that it's his dickless running game and not the playcaller that was the reason for only 181 total yards? Probably not. WE NEED A SMASHMOUTH PREMIERE BACK!!! I don't give 1,000 $hits if they fit in his offense or not because his 190 pound RB experiment has been a failure.

sorry 2cents, we don't have a healthy tailback because our fearless owner decided that the team HAD to release Kenny Watson to keep the highly sought after and talented Sultan McCullough, the next Walter Payton

AND we just had to trade for Trung Canidate, a back who was removed from the Rams because their staff and front office thought he was too soft and oft-injured to make a difference on a consistent basis ON THE FIELD.

In short, we were set up to fail to some degree.

The Betts injury could not be expected and is the one that has the team scrambling, because Betts was the best all-around back on the Redskins, the only one to give us both a receiving and rushing threat from the backfield at once.
