Lewis is Honest: It was the money

I like honesty in a coach. Lewis is obviously a person who values honesty because on 980 he said that he had to consider his career advancement and financial considerations brought up by his wife. He mentioned his daughter going to college, so I'm sure she'll need a new Lexus. Spurrier apparently had him working today already. They were evaluating personnel and he mentioned Green's play last season getting an interception.

Yeah a Lexus is fine, but without much to invest in over the past few months to hedge the tax losses, he may have somewhat of a point. Well, those bucks are certainly upper middle crust for sure, but for how long. As good as Marty was supposed to be, it was the forthsight in the contract that kept him rich otherwise, he could have wound up like a few coaches out of the NFL.

Still he has expenses that still will come from him for whatever, so let's say he's done with coaching as a DC down the road and he never gets a call to be a Head Coach, then that cash, every bit of it has more meaning. Of course we know he'd get an offer somewhere, at the very least, in college, but then that may not be his cup of tea.

and what's wrong with that?

The NFL media on Sporstline and Sporting News seems to imply that there is some dark mark on the organization for paying coaches to come here.

People take jobs because of money. What is so surprising about that?

Unless you get a guy that is a former player or assistant from a particular city, you aren't going to be able to get a discount in trying to hire them for the HC or DC jobs later on.

It's just too competitive out there.

Besides, I doubt Brian Billick went to Baltimore because he was a life long fan of Art Modell and his business ethics.

It was because he was getting a big raise and the opportunity for a promotion.

And if someone offered Billick the chance to become both Coach and GM in the future, I am sure Brian would leave the Ravens to go somewhere else.

[ February 12, 2002, 10:11 AM: Message edited by: bulldog ]

It never seems to amaze me how some sportswriters draw up there own conclusions about people. Who wouldnt take the damn money?! I regret the fact that owners will be bitter because our signings but f**ckem! They will get over it! There is no loyalty anymore in the NFL. The Darrell Green era of staying with one team is long gone. That also applies to coaches as well. Baltimorons need to wake up and realize that karma is a b*tch. Modell moved from Cleveland because our dumba$$ Gov. waved about 300 million in his face. So his quote about loyalty just suck arse!!!
