Marty: A Curse for Washington?

If this is true from ESPN.com, then Marty is the one to blame for lackluster performances. why do we get only extremes in Washington - Norv never made a point to discipline his players and now Schottenheimer is so unbearable that veterans and rookies alike hate his guts. If the players hate him, we'll be able to attract only mediocore players in the future. I am not at all impressed by Marty: the way he has handled the management, his players and the decisions he's made on personnel. The coaching staff is awfull. The guy passed on Coslett and Wade Phillips for Raye and Kurt Schott. That's stupid! there's a reason why this guy has never won a superbowl and probably, in the pessimistic outlook, never will.

This is a good article, I agree with it.

***********

As noted early this week, the jettisoning of George isn't likely to solve all the problems Schottenheimer has with his underachieving team. There continues to be, especially from some of the Redskins' most-tenured veterans, a disdain for the head coach that translates into playing with a distinct lack of emotion. In fact, the dispassion with which the Skins performed in the Monday night debacle at Green Bay was palpable. Not to mention embarrassing. The loss of respect began on the first day of camp when Schottenheimer, allegedly a good coach for a veteran team, began the workouts with a dread "Oklahoma" drill. At that moment, players like defensive end Bruce Smith, who might still request a trade before the Oct. 16 deadline (although the salary cap ramifications to Washington make a swap nearly impossible), shut it down on Schottenheimer. The players didn't react very well, either, on Monday, when they had a 7:30 a.m. wakeup call for a game that didn't kick off until 8 p.m., Green Bay time. The early wake-up call and a mandatory team breakfast had players grumbling most of the day, as they trudged through a series of team meetings. Schottenheimer doesn't allow players to have single rooms on the road, even if they pay the difference between a single and double room. So Smith had to sleep in the lobby of the team hotel last Sunday night because the snoring of roommate Dan "Big Daddy" Wilkinson kept him awake. A few of the veterans told ESPN.com they will recommend to all their friends that no one sign with the Redskins as a free agent next spring. "I know money is always the biggest factor in free agency, but all Dan Snyder's dollars aren't worth the (stuff) you have to put up with here," said one player. "If I'm talking to any player who is in free agency, my advice is going to be: 'Stay away, man.' Even going to Cincinnati can't be as bad as this."

To me, it's not a negative to make people room together. But, aside from that, the quotes here have to be coming from big Bruce in particular. Lenny knows a lot about what Bruce is thinking, then drops in an unnamed vet for a quote. Right.

Hey, I'm all for trading Smith. Do it this season, right now. You have to renegotiate with Big Daddy then, but, trade him to the Rams for Hakim and a draft pick, or, just a first round pick. They could use a defensive end smile.gif.

Again though, the worst case scenario in D.C. is happening. The voices of anger and dissent against Marty are starting to take a face and become the story. He will have to find a way to fight for control of the team even if it means giving up a bit of control.

But, hey, at least we aren't the Vikings where Cris Carter is calling plays in the huddle making Sherm Lewis so mad he wouldn't call any more plays and made Denny do it, and even Carter changed Denny's plays.

I find justification in articles claiming Marty is creating strife in the lockerroom.

I stated this to the catcalls and lambast of the people on this board almost a month ago.

But what the hell do I know. I mean being a Cowboy fan must mean I can't evalutate anything on your squad.

I think the expression is, "the chickens are coming home to roost."

I'm glad this is happening. I'm not a huge fan of Marty, but I can't stand it when players complain about how tough life is.

BooHoo, you had to tackle somebody in practice. You can't have your own hotel room. He makes you get up in the mornings and go to work.

What a bunch of wussies, especially Bruce Smith. Smith has always been a complainer, but a producer. Now he's just a complainer. He poor run support is killing our defense, and he isn't getting to the QB enough for a guy that looks pass every play.

Once we get rid of the pretty boys like Smith, we might actually have ourselves a team here.

Bottom line is these players havehad it easy for so long under Turner that they forgot what it takes to win. They forgot the discipline. They forgot the work involved. Look at the past seven years and it all adds up to the failures of the Turner era, no chemistry, breakdown in basic fundamentals, and consistent mental lapses with no emtion. Now that Marty is trying to reinstill some of the hardcore values, they are ready to bolt. The hell with them then!

The other aspect is organziational culture. The cultre shifted dramatically in the front office when Snyder purchased the team. Now, the field is shifting dramatically with Schotty taking over as coach. We all know organizations resist change, specifically, great deal change. That is what we are seeing here.

These a$$holes didn't play when life was easy under Cooke/Norv, they didn't play during the transition period under Snyder/Norv and now they won't play under Marty.

Just exactly when WILL these mother f'ers play?

Give me a break. How 'bout a little sacrifice for six months while we're making the large $$. We are professionals, right?mad.gif

Shony the link to that is contained in a piece about the Redskins here:

In Too Deep, no one here lambasted you about the comments coming out about Marty. In fact many of us have been saying for months that the grumbling is fine now, but could form into something less fine if the season started out poorly. However, I'll be the first to say I don't read all the people that take exception to one of your foolish posts, so, I can't validate whether or not you've ever been beaten silly on that point as you have the rest.

But, the quote you should stick with is, "What the hell do I know." It fits awfully well.

RedskinFan4Life, I'm feeling pretty much as you do. Last year Norv opened the locker room to personal tailors and gold chain vendors. The players had the run of things and the results were embarrassing. So the times, they are a' changin'.

If half of what Len P. is writing is true, I'd probably dislike playing for Marty. But the players - particularly the ones who were here last year - have brought things to this point.

Sorry your part-time multi-million dollar job is unpleasant, guys. Real sorry.

I'm gonna have to take the player's point of view on this one, at least Bruce and Darrell. These guys have worked their tails off, especially in the off-season, and have been model citizens for years. To have either of these guys grumble, SOMETHING must be seriously wrong.

Sure Marty had cap issues to deal with but some of the moves he made in the off-season were extremely questionable and his treatment of some of the veterans has been less than exemplary. I'm all for the disciplined approach but I think he's taken it a bit too far.

He'd better get the veterans together for a closed door meeting quick before he loses this team. There is a dire need for give and take on both sides in order to avoid an implosion.

I know of many military veterans that hated the drill sergeant's guts while being "prepared", because they had fallen away from the tough lessons in life or was being pushed to do things they never did. Can't say whether they were spoiled, careful planner, receptive on impact, a realist or hardened by the streets in each case, but when they left, they didn't realized how changed they were in "their awareness" of others, contributing to aid, was suddenly more respectful to civilians. Little things meant more, but no fretting for what you didn't have.

softer or civilized?

When a ballon goes up, they don't act like their high, they respond not knowing the outcome, but knowing it is the "right" thing to do. As time goes on they become better at it and then they remember that person they hated.
