Coles Is Maintaining A Positive Outlook

Laveranues Coles was part of a New York Jets team that, after some early-season woes, came back to finish 9-7 and earn a Wild Card berth. While the postseason is certainly not a primary focus for Coles and the Redskins right now, he is maintaining a positive outlook for the season—and expects the same from his teammates.

“You better [have a positive mindset],” he said at Redskin Park on Monday. “If you quit now, you don’t deserve to be in the locker room—because I haven’t quit and I’m not going to quit. So our attitude stays the same. We’re optimistic that we have a chance.”

Coles led the Redskins with four catches and 35 yards in Sunday’s disappointing 20-17 loss to the Carolina Panthers. For the season, Coles leads the team with 55 receptions for 818 yards, a 14.9 yards per catch average.

From his days of growing up in Jacksonville, Fla., to his four seasons at Florida State, Coles has achieved his level of success by constantly battling and constantly competing, no matter the odds.

That’s the only way for the Redskins to improve on their 4-6 record, he said.

“It’s the same for all of us,” he said. “We’re all here because we’re good at what we do. And you have to be a competitor to survive in this game.

“If you’re not, that’s when you have to look at yourself in the mirror. You have to ask yourself, ‘Is there something I could have done better to help this team win.’ That’s part of coming here [to Redskin Park], watching film and getting your grades. You look at what you did wrong, you look at what you did right and you see what you can improve on.”

Coles credited the Carolina defense with making opportunistic plays to stop the Redskins—especially after turnovers. Washington was able to force four turnovers in Sunday’s game but scored only three points off the turnovers.

"If you could put your finger on why plays don't work, you could go out and play perfect every week," he said. "But it just doesn't work that way in this league."
