Looking ahead... who do we pick first?

2004 NFL Draft, use our first pick on defense line or a running back? This is all theoretical, considering anything could happen in the mean time, but these are gonna be two holes we will certainly be looking to fill in the offseason. Will Smith would be my #1 pick should he be there, but there are some talented RB's in the field. A safety is also something to consider (Sean Taylor)

OR

If the Redskins don't sign Champ to an extension (God forbid), do we take a Big Ten CB like Marlin Jackson or Chris Gamble?

But basically, who would you take, a Running Back or a Defensive Lineman.

D-line!!!!!!!!! Vince Wilfork. We may be picking high enough to get him. If not him then Will Smith. I'd love to see him getting jiggy with it for us next year. Don't draft offense at all. We waste picks on the offense every year and unless you have an offense like the Rams of a few years ago or the Chiefs of this year, you are never going to score enoug points to win without a pass rush or the ability to stop the run.

The consensus here is that we need to go D-line as often as we can in the first 4 rounds and I agree but we can’t get caught up in reaching for talent. Sure D-line is our #1 priority but we have needs at RB, CB, TE and possibly OL as well. Of course everything depends on where we pick and the mindset of the teams who pick before us.

RB is obvious if you are a Rock fan or not. There may be a couple of guys who are worth taking early IMO. The deeper in the draft you go the less I am a fan of taking a RB.

CB may be a necessity if we can’t get things straight with Champ. It’s a nice insurance policy to have too many CB’s anyway. I can’t see us going that way in the first two rounds but we better keep that in mind.

TE is a no brainer too. How many times have we thought we could use a guy like Gonzales or Shockey. Winslow will be that type of guy even though I dislike the guy. He can be a game changer IMO. If we don’t get him then we can wait a while and pick up someone on day two.

OL is an area that we thought we had under control but maybe we don’t. Some more depth here would be nice.

my god the defense woul regain its top 10 rating if we could just get pressure on the QB once in a while.

There are not many good DE's or DT's in this draft coming up, that was this past year

The Talent is in the skill positions. I still say if a back like Jones is there then you can't let him go. You can still get the same quality of DE or DT in the second round.

I agree D-line is our the biggest need, but I would propose that linebacker is our next target to improve. All too often the LB's arent getting it done. Arrington is unquestionably the most talented, youngest and most driven of the three. Jessie still shows flashes but age is starting to show. Trotter plain SUCKS!!! Overweight, slow, and out of position more than half the time, this guy has been a complete bust. Cant fault mgt for going after him, but what a disappointment. Look no farther than yesterday on the 4th and one. This is an all too frequent theme. Whether its a tight end or a back none of these guys can cover (again #56 has the ability).

If the higher rated Dlineman isnt avail. I say go LB. Then come back to the D-Line or go safety. Hell, the more I think about it. No D area is sacred. Amazing, how do you go from 5th to almost last that quick. Sorry Big Daddy wasnt the difference! Garndner maybe gives you a few spots. How a bunch of free lancers with no direction!!!!

Can we draft a new D Coord. while we're at it.

HTTR!!!

A RB? Are you kidding me? We are loaded at RB, all we have to do is get rid of Spurrier and/or get rid of our RB-by-committee crap.

Its too early to speculate about the draft. We don't even know which Juniors are going to declare for the draft. We have obvious DL needs, but it depends on who we can sign in free agency in March and mid-April. :)

We are loaded with crap at RB. You can get good DEs and DTs past the first round if you do you homework. Use the first pick for a good RB, get the d-line in the following rounds.

DL is the main priority. As concensus with many of my fellow Skins fans who have posted on this thread, we need some help on the D-line. We can't sack anyone, and we can't stop the run, either. I think a pass rusher would be the best way to go. But be it Tackle or End, we need it!! I think we may be able to get a RB in free agency somewhere...Barlow from S.F.? They're definately not keeping him and Hearst around next year. O-line would be a good pick, too. I think that we have the skill players (sans running back...although Rock is the ****) to be good...we just need some linemen.

Tommie Harris is twice the player Wilfork is .. the difference between the two is Tommie Harris lives up to his promise .. Wilfork just has a bunch of unused physical potential. He just looks like a loafer out there to me.

Wilfork was dominated in the VT game. Heck the entire overrated Miami DL was pushed around. Tech threw 8 passes the entire game and dominated.

For every Warren Sapp out of Miami, there's a Kenard Lang. Or that DE that was taken 18th out of Miami after Lang was taken 17th the same year.

Will Wilfork be any good? Maybe. maybe not. More than likely he'll be a Russell maryland.

The draft pick will depend on where the pick falls, who's available where (do you want to move around in the draft; are you targeting someone, do you want more picks, etc.), who's available when you pick (if an Eli Manning, Kevin Jones, Deangelo Hall, and Winslow are available and no comparable DL is, do you take the much better player or the need?

Not to mention the net losses and gains in free agency. You trade Rod Gardner and then lose McCants to free agency, maybe you want a reciever. Especially as you sign a vet DE and DT.

What happens if someone big (like Champ, Ramsey, Samuels, Janson, Smoot, lavar) goes down with a SERIOUS injury, costing them next season and maybe their career? Then they need replacing... I remember the Raiders spending a #1 on a DT who died mere weeks or months after the draft. never took the field.

we definitely have to go DL. i too had will smith in mind with our first round pick. he might shoot up draft boards though after the combines and individual workouts (that can happen to any player though...). pollack from NCSt might also be a guy we could trade down to get. overall it is gonna be a weak year for DE, but at DT there are 3 guys who should go top-15.

wilfork. he is a beast. he has it tough though because miami had to replace all their starting linemen. which means there are a lot of young inexperienced kids out there allowing wilfork to get double and triple teamed most games. he'll still leave early and be a top-10 pick. and if he turns out like russell maryland that wouldn't be too bad.

tommy harris. i think he'll be the best DT to come out of the draft. this kid is awesome and he works his ass off. of course OK's D unit as a whole is incredible and he is able to make plays because they have talent at every position. you pick your poison as far as who you block/double team/etc... the other guy will make the play. i would love to see him in burgundy and gold.

starks (UMD). local kid. supposed to be in the mold of kris jenkins, another UMD product. he was the guy in ramsey's face yesterday. i haven't seen much of him but hear he is pretty nasty.

if we could end up with a will smith or either of these DT's i would be stoked.

quick though-- maybe someone like darnell dockett will fall to the second?

2nd round--

we have to go LB IMO. it is gonna be very deep this year and we can get great value in the second. armstead is gonna need replacing soon, so lets get someone who can impact the game. i am thinking we could have a shot at johnathan vilma, from Miami (he could sneak into the first though), Dontarrious Thomas from Auburn (also might get in the first-- his teammate Karlos Dansby will be gone already), Michael Boulware (FLSt), Teddy Lehman (OK). if any of these guys make it we have to snag one.

i am worried about the DB situation though. that is another position that we could get great value from in the second round. should be pretty deep there. much better than last year when it was terrence newman and marcus trufant. 2004 will have marlin jackson (MICH), chris gamble (OHST), deangelo hall (VT), Derrick Strait (OK). all look like first rounders to me.

DL is the biggest need on the team. Pass rushing DE is priority # 1. Antwan Odom from Alabama.

DT is looking better recently, but depth is always a concern. Dalton and Russell are starting to help.

I am in agreement with those whoe like LB in Round 2.

Armstead is long in the tooth, but we will bring him back for one more year.

I agree.

I also agree that Jon Vilma out of Miami would be a huge pickup in Round 2. He might go late 1st, but he will probably go early 2. If he is there for us, that would be a great pick. This guy would help out next year and also down the road when Armstead and Trotter are gone.
