Burgold
They kept saying that Steve Smith disappeared, but when the game was on the line there were those catches. The one where he leaps and turns around near the twenty and Champ doesn't even try to find the ball... I think if he had awareness, it would have been batted away. He had a chance for an interception. Two hands, chest level, and he drops it. The fumble recovery... I'm glad he fell on it, but if he scoops it up and runs.... Did Bailey play a great game? He limited their star receiver, but did he take advantage of the opportunities he had to be great, no. At least I don't think so. What do you think? Potato Sack
I think our whole team sucks.
Pete
He shut down Smith for the better part of the day, and no corner in this league is foolproof. Darrell Green once said. If he had a dime for every ball he should have picked instead of deflecting, he'd be a rich man. Pics are nice, no doubt about it. But I'll take a deflection over a reception for the other team any day. Champ had one his better game of the season yesterday, if not his best thus far.:2cents:
kleese
Champ is very good, but he's not a star. Stars make star quality plays. IMO, Champ belongs on that level with the very good pro-bowl caliber CB's, but he's NOWHERE near Deion and Darrell Green. Champ only gets beats a few times a game if that, but the GREAT ones could go THREE WEEKS without giving up a play of more than 10-15 yards. Right now, if it was my call, I'd tag Champ with the purpose of letting another team sign him, and I'd take the picks. He's not making us any better and our defense is 100% incapable of stopping the pass late in the game, so what does it matter?
NASMTrainer
On the fumble he tried to pick it up and run. When he bobbled it he decided too just fall on it instead of possibly losing it all together. Smart play IMO.

This is exactly what the problem is on defense. Couldn't say it better myself. Until we get any pressure on the QB we are going to witness games like this for a long time. Burgold
maybe, but I don't think he took advantage of the opportunities he did have to make "great" plays in that game. I actually think that we did produce some pressure this game. At least much better than in some weeks.
jaxskins
Am I hearing things right? Are you all telling me that Champ is average? Let me make 1 thing clear Champ is one of if not the best corner in the NFL. I think most of you down play his abilites so that when the season is over and he wants a hefty contract and we end up losing him you won't feel so bad. Hitnskins
Are you referring to Champ "BUTTERFINGERS" BAILEY??? REPEAT AFTER ME......"Champ is good, but not great.....Champ is good, but not great.....Champ is good but not great.... Champ is a legend in his own mind!!!!!!! It's a shame that most on this board are too blind to see it.... Ionly hope the decision makers for the Redskins aren't.......he's definitely not one of the top DEFENSIVE PLAYERS in the League like he thinks he is. Skeletor The Invincible
I think if we had any kind of passrush going out on that field, Champ would be looking like Deion. Passrush makes QBs throw before they want to, and right now it seems like opposing QBs have all the time in the world to sit back there and have a picnic. I think he is a great corner playing on a crappy team right now. I hope we resign him, but I don't think I want to pay him to be the best corners in the NFL. He's a great one, but... we have other needs.

We need to play man to man to have a chance.
Kilmer17
We've lost for 5 years now with Champ on our team. We can certainly lose without him. It's about spending cap dollars correctly. Bailey wants too much money. We could resign him and stick with the Dline that we have now. OR we could sign a less talented CB for cheaper and have enough money to seriously upgrade the Dline. Cskin
Impact CBs make game changing plays...... and Bailey had an opportunity to make two of them and could not. In fact, every week he has an opportunity to make a game changing play and does not. The pass deflect on the crossing route was perfect position on his part...... yet instead of intercepting the pass and taking it back for a potential score he drops a ball that hits BOTH of his hands simultaneously. Impact CBs make that play. On the jump ball to SMith late, it's Champ's game in a nutshell. Sure... he's a tremendous athlete with wonderful physical measureables but he lacks basic football awareness. On that play in particular, he's trailing Smith and simply fails to compete for a ball he could have easily deflected or tipped for another game changing play. Instead.... he looses contact with Smith and allows him an easy Jump Ball catch. Impact CBs make that play. At this point, I'd prefer the franchise tag and hope a team wishes to sign him for his services. I'll take a #1 and #3 this year..... and maybe a #2 next year..... and take my chances with a couple of the other FA CBs and resign Smoot to a long-term fair market deal. TD_washingtonredskins
Kilmer hit this on the head. It's not that we'd prefer to pay another CB the money we'd give Champ, it's just that Champ (or ANY CB) isn't worth that big a percentage of your salary cap. We need to disperse the money more evenly in order to field a very competitive defense. To give you an example of the formula for good D's I'd like someone to name me the CBs from Carolina... I rest my case.
Phat Hog
Originally posted by Hitman56 Smooty is the man! Champ always gets burned. Not sure I’d go quite that far. Champ has had an above average year, but surely better than Smoot. Hopefully Champ will jump at our contract offer at the end of the season – he is one of the better CBs in the game, but by no means is he a game changer. Utah
No one has the luxary of expending with a talent like Champ. Its real easy to look like Deion when you have the front 4 that Dallas did. But remember one thing about Deion, he could be beat on routes that took a couple of seconds to come about. Ins and crosses were the way he could be beat. But teams did have the luxary of dropping back 5 too often on those teams because the pass rush would get to them. The Dline makes up for everything that happens in the secondary. Imagine this. Our entire back 7 is pretty damn good and we have no push yet from our line. Imagine what will happen when that is taken care of.
Kilmer17
We wont be able to take care of it if we pay Champ anywhere close to what he wants. Thats the point.
