What a disaster. Markets are crashing everywhere now and the pound is the worst it's been since 1985. Some talk of a referendum in north Ireland to join Ireland and for Scotland to re-vote on independence.

I knew the polls showed that it was close, but I sort of assumed they'd vote to stay. Oh well, can't really be upset that democracy chose the course forward. Choice was theirs to make and they've apparently chosen to leave.

the people that want to stand alone, value their own culture within their own borders, and not be told what to do by a larger group are the colonialists in this story? How wonderfully nonsensical. I'm not sure I agree or disagree with this brexit, but to call this move colonialist seems a bit like "war is peace." Then again, someone may have gone and changed the definitions of words again while I wasn't looking. Seems to be happening a lot.

This guy who's a "leaver" on CNN right now sure sounds a lot like the "build a wall on the southern border Trump" type of person. Now I'm not a follower of Brittish politics, but I didn't realize that other countries had the scary, "they took our jobs", type conservatives.

Our turn for a referendum, says French far right FN

 

France's far right National Front party called for a referendum on European Union membership in France on Friday as Britain voted to leave the bloc.

 

"The liberty of peoples always wins in the end! Bravo to the United Kingdom," said FN deputy leader Florian Philippot on Twitter. "Our turn now #Brexit #Frexit."

 

The FN has long called for France to exit the EU and has performed well in recent elections, even though it has yet to break through effectively in second-round voting.

The British decisionto leave the European Union “ clearly has very significant implications for Ireland”, the Government has said in a statement as the Cabinet prepares for an emergency meeting.

 

In what is effectively a holding statement, the Government said it “notes the outcome of the UK-EU referendum this morning”.

 

“This result clearly has very significant implications for Ireland, as well as for Britain and for the European Union.”

 

The Cabinet will hold an emergency meeting this morning to “reflect on” the fallout of Britain’s decision to leave the European Union.

It's a victory for people who want Britain to be as white as possible and think of migrants as a lesser class of human.

(other people may have voted for it, but will likely get screwed over by it)

And it may lead to the shattering of the UK.

And how is any of that colonialist? Do you have any idea how many countries on this planet are fiercely defensive of their culture and view any challenges to it from the outside as decidedly unwelcome? Colonialism is when you take that show on the road and impose it on others. Or at least it was. Perhaps now it's just another word for conservative white people.

I'm really enjoying the dramatics on twitter right now.  Especially the hatred of old people for daring to disagree with young people.  It's all their fault you understand, they've got charts and everything. 

 

I wonder when people will start saying "you know, I miss being 20. I was so much wiser then."

Pretty amazing to see the seemingly inexorable creeping behemoth of bureaucracy overthrown. Proud of our cousins across the pond. They have chosen freedom and sovereignty over fear-mongering and race-baiting.

The U.K. will finally be able to negotiate their own trade agreements. They will no longer have unelected officials in Brussels forcing regulations down their throats that may make sense in Italy but none at all in the UK.

Re: the pound - Obviously no actual effect has had time to take place in the economy. Maybe there will be a negative impact. This is merely people who swore there would be hell to pay pitching their fit. The pound will rally, and the markets will stabilize. It may take a week or month or more, but nothing big changes for quite some time. The zombie apocalypse doesn't start tomorrow. The U.K. isn't inundated by racist bigots who want to watch the world burn.
