Pete
That's too funny. I doubt Snyder would go that rout, but any phone system can be used as a listening device for that area even with it's handset in it's cradle, including rotery phones. Blade
For those who cant access this site...

INSIDE THE N.F.L.

Three Assistants Say Snyder Eavesdropped

By MIKE FREEMAN

Want to know how ugly things got between the coaching staff of the Washington Redskins and the team's principal owner, Daniel Snyder?

Three of the fired assistant coaches said they suspected that Snyder used listening devices to eavesdrop on members of the coaching staff, bugging their telephones and offices.

Why? They said they believed Snyder was attempting to learn negative information about the coaches, in case he had to fire them, so he could use the information as justification not to honor their contracts. The coaches said they believed this very strongly.

That was how much trust was lacking between Snyder and the coaches, who admitted that they have no hard evidence to back up their suspicions.

A relationship definitely hits the low point when one partner suspects the other of spying.

In an interview last week, Snyder denied the allegation, calling it "the silliest thing in the whole world." He added, "It's so silly I don't even want to justify it by commenting further."

The allegations could simply be the sign of a paranoid coaching staff. The assistant coaches' claims could have also resulted from being bitter over Snyder's firing them. One thing became clear in conversations with a number of the assistant coaches, and that was that many of them disliked Snyder intensely.

And that is the larger issue. How did things get so ugly between Snyder and Coach Marty Schottenheimer's staff to the point where the coaches thought Snyder would spy on them?

And if the feelings were so bitter, how did this dysfunctional team ever manage to go 8-3 after starting 0-5?

The three assistant coaches admitted that they had no firm proof of any eavesdropping, only anecdotal stories, to back their claims. But they said they were convinced that the bugging took place.

They said that Snyder knew about details of conversations that two or three coaches had privately in one of the coaches' offices. Sometimes, in these discussions, the coaches said, they berated Snyder.

Snyder, the coaches said, would then repeat parts of their conversations to one or more of the coaches, sometimes verbatim, the few times they spoke to Snyder. Snyder rebutted that, saying it was impossible because he barely spoke to the coaches.

"There was a great deal of suspicion on our parts that our offices and phones were bugged," one assistant coach, who asked not to be identified, said. "A lot of us would be careful about what we said on the telephones and in our offices."

Another assistant coach said, "We only spoke freely when we were outside the offices."

One Redskin player recalled a bizarre scene this season when he was speaking to one of the coaches and began to make critical remarks about Snyder. The coach, according to the player, interrupted and asked him to talk more quietly, while turning up the volume on a radio.

Sounds like something from an Oliver Stone film.

The staff, one person close to Snyder said, was being paranoid. Yet, teams spying on each other and on themselves is not unprecedented in the National Football League.

When Bill Parcells was the Jets' coach, he installed tiny hidden video cameras in the locker room, which several players discovered by accident, under the premise that the equipment would help to catch potential thieves. But players always felt the cameras were installed to monitor them.

Fourth Coach in 14 Months

Daniel Snyder's hiring of Steve Spurrier might be his most critical move as a young owner. Snyder's reputation is beginning to reach George Steinbrenner-like proportions.

Because Marty Schottenheimer was fired after only one season as coach, some coaches said they believed Snyder was the most difficult owner in the sport to work for.

In many ways he is a great owner. He spends money at will and does whatever it takes to win.

But Snyder has had four head coaches in 14 months. Norv Turner was fired 13 games into the 2000 season; Terry Robiskie preceded Schottenheimer, who was succeeded by Spurrier.

Spurrier, the former Florida coach, is a great hire for the team, and Snyder must get credit for that. But he also has to show patience with Spurrier, something he did not do with Schottenheimer.

The Help-Wanted Section

Spinning on the coaching carousel:

• Now that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been jilted — again — by Bill Parcells, where will the franchise look for a head coach?

The team is looking at a number of candidates and according to a team executive, one person high on the Buccaneers' list is Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Marvin Lewis. The team cannot speak to Lewis until the Ravens are eliminated from postseason play.

Tampa Bay will also consider Pittsburgh's offensive coordinator, Mike Mularkey, and the Giants' defensive coordinator, John Fox.

• Tony Dungy, the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach, still has a shot to get the Indianapolis Colts' job. He is a friend of the Colts' offensive coordinator, Tom Moore, and Dungy thinks highly of quarterback Peyton Manning.

• The Carolina Panthers are interested in Dungy, Marty Schottenheimer, Lewis and Fox. Don't rule out Fox there. He recently had a great interview with Carolina team officials.

• Oakland Raiders Coach Jon Gruden will most likely not sign a contract extension, said a person close to him. He has one year remaining on his contract. Gruden, the person said, thinks that the Raiders are about to go through a major rebuilding process.

Modell a Hall Finalist

Art Modell has taken his lumps for moving the Cleveland Browns to Baltimore. Now he is a finalist for the Hall of Fame, and he deserves to get in.

Modell was nominated as a contributor, since he has spent over four decades in pro football, from 1961 to 1995 with the Browns, and from 1996 with Baltimore. Modell's two biggest contributions were his involvement in the television-contract negotiations over the past 32 years and persuading teams to accept revenue sharing.

Few owners have dedicated so much of their lives to the sport, and Modell is also one of the few owners to have an extremely diverse front- office staff.

The debate on whether Modell should get into the Hall of Fame will center on his controversial decision to move the Browns to Baltimore. Some will argue that he does not deserve to be a Hall of Famer because of that.

But several voters said privately last week that they were ready to forgive Modell and vote him in.

Thanksgiving Possibilities

Next year's Thanksgiving Day game will feature the Jets or the Patriots against the Lions, the N.F.L. said. The schedule will be firmed up in the coming weeks. . . . One longtime scout said Giants defensive end Michael Strahan, who set the sack record this season, had one of the most dominant years any defensive player has had in the history of modern pro football. . . . Ravens tight end Shannon Sharpe has an impressive streak going. He has played on the winning team in 12 consecutive games in the playoffs with Denver and Baltimore.

Copyright 2002 The New York Times Company
Fitz
How much you wanna bet that Jimmy Raye is the primary source for this story? Given the willingness of Mike Stock, Hue Jackson and even Kurt Schottenheimer to return to work under Spurrier, I have to wonder how much of this is pure unadulterated bull$#!t?

If any of it is true, however, there sure was a lot of intrigue going on in Ashburn. Between Snyder's eavesdropping and Marty's alleged 5-0 spies, calling the work environment "dysfunctional" is an understatement. Even more justification for Snyder to pull the plug, IMO. indyskinsfan
I don't believe a shred of it! Fitzman that is correct, why on earth would anybody want to return to a team that is accussed of spying on them. Wiretapping has it's perts nowadays, but for what tangible reason would a man with the power to fire a coach anytime he wanted, have to have "personal" information.

Oh and by the way, Jimmy Raye, I'm one of many fans who could easily say you threw those games with intentional BS play calling and confusing, conflicting instructions to Tony Banks, who at times wised up to what he saw and called numerous timeouts early.

Now, for the most part, Raye WON'T get a call from anyone in the NFL and knows it. Go fishing, or better yet, go f88k yourself!

NavyDave
Those accusers must have been the ones who refused to sign the morals clause Danny wanted the assistant coaches to sign to prevent shenanigans with the secretaries, etc
TennesseeCarl
Boy, my reaction to the piece is that it's a pure hatchet job. Not a single atttributed quote in the whole thing.

Quotes like : "some coaches said they believed Snyder was the most difficult owner in the sport to work for." What coaches? And why would they be shooting their mouthes off about who the most difficult owner in the sport is?

Like Runs With Scissors noted, you gotta wonder why the assistant coaches would be on the phones to each other trashing the owner? What brings that on? The guy said he was going to be hands-off and it seemed that he was. Or perhaps we're going to find out more as the off-season progresses.

It's pretty strange. Throughout the whole season the only thing I ever read (and like all of us, I read plenty) about Snyder's relationship with Schottenheimer's guys was that business about not boinking the secretaries or some such. Art
Fitzman got it right.

We've kept two coaches from last year and the brother of the head coach we fired is interested in returning. This story has absolutely no basis in reality given those facts. It is funny though. I've got 10 bucks says In Too Deep produces this story as fresh news in six months when Len P. rehashes it on ESPN. Any takers?
