Quotes From Redskin Park, Nov. 13

11/13/2003

HEAD COACH STEVE SPURRIER

On Thursday’s practice:

“That was about the top three coldest practice days I’ve ever experienced. The wind was blowing about 40 miles per hour. We got through most of it, though. We cut out our special team kicking. We got most all of our plays in. Of course we couldn’t throw it all in the wind. We got some things accomplished.”

On Chad Morton:

“Chad was running around pretty well. He has a good chance to [play].”

On Bryan Johnson:

“Bryan should [play]. Hopefully we can get him a new helmet [to protect him from more concussions]. We’re trying to find a new helmet for him, one that has a type of bubble on the top. Kevin Mitchell has one, so we’re trying to get Bryan one.”

On if Bryan Johnson participated in contact drills:

“We didn’t do much contact today. We just practiced without pads.”

On whether Rock Cartwright will start Sunday’s game:

“Right now he’s been the only fullback, so he hasn’t been starting in practice because he’s the only one there. We have Trung, Chad and Sultan. Rock is capable of playing a lot at tailback whether he starts or not.”

On Matt Bowen’s status:

“We’re pretty confident that he’ll be able to play.”

On whether it affects the Redskins’ preparation not knowing if Stephen Davis or DeShaun Foster will start in Sunday’s game:

“I think their plays are similar. Foster may be more of an outside runner. We’ll look at their run plays and try to tackle whoever has the ball.”

On who he thinks the best blocking running back is:

“It would be between Rock Cartwright and Bryan Johnson. They’re both good at it.”

On Tim Hasselbeck:

“He’s throwing a lot of good balls. If he had to play, we feel confident he’d play well. He’s pretty close to knowing most of the plays.”

On the lack of production by the team’s third wide receivers:

“They just haven’t gotten a lot of balls coming their way. Simple as that. Laveranues Coles and Rod Gardner had just about everything thrown at them last game. Patrick Johnson, Darnerien McCants and Taylor Jacobs have had a few, but not as many as we’d hope. We need to get more going toward Dar especially. He’s had some big catches for us over the last two years.”
