Second, I think you're proving my point about looking at movies with a critical eye.  You don't think about movies like this when you're a kid.  I'm not saying the current movies don't have their faults...they certainly do.  

To further prove my point, look at the parent company, Disney.  Going to Disney World as a kid is a vastly different experience than when you're an adult, for obvious reasons.  You just look at things differently when you're an adult than when you're a kid.  There's no way you can have the sense of wonderment at the current movies like you did when you saw the first ones when you were a kid.  You couldn't go to Disney World now and look at it like you did when your parents took you.  

 

As a matter of fact, yeah I cared about character arcs back then lol. It's funny you mention the age of 10 because that's the exact age I saw all of the Star Wars movies.  I missed its initial theatrical runs since I was too young and my parents got me into the movies at a later age on home video when we could afford it lol. Lucky for me I was able to experience ROTJ for the first time on the big screen when it was re-released in theaters 1985. By then I was heavily invested in the series after watching the first two movies. I remember even as a 10 year old the first thing I noticed was how Luke's demeanor had changed from the first two movies and was intrigued that he was wearing all black like Vader. I wasn't just sitting there waiting for the next lightsaber or space battle lol. I actually liked and was rooting for these characters. I've always been a character-centric person. Even if these new Star Wars movies were released back then I would probably treat them like i treated the Godzilla movies I watched back then....fast forward to the battles. Their characters are that bland.

Unpopular opinion time:

 

Rogue One was so boring that I could hardly stay awake. Cardboard characters that were never properly developed, a passive, boring protagonist (what was her name?) that just has things happen to her, an endlessly protracted plot that only kept me slightly engaged because I knew Vader was going to show up eventually, forced humor and references that fail to land, and it's straight up ugly too. It's one of those dark, muddy movies with the overused blue/beige color palatte that's supposed to look gritty and serious and in the end it's just a dreary viewing experience. 

 

I'm not surprised that it's the diehard Star Wars nerd favorite from Disney though. The only risk it takes with the franchise is being more dour than usual. Plus, Vader is a badass for a few minutes, which was like a tiny beam of light in a deep, dark well. Even I can admit that ending makes it worth a rental. 

 

And, of course, Solo was even worse. Can't wait until they start churning out side movies with no meaningful stakes every year.

Hell just because the bad guys (and the darkside) win in the end everyone goes bonkers. It's just a movie about a fictional society. Shouldn't get that emotionally attached.

Rise of Skywalker - 59% (so far)

 

 

Can't edit lol...but @Rogue Jedi , this review pretty much sums up how I felt about Phantom Menace lol...

It does. I looked it up because I was curious and my assumption was wrong. The critic number for The Last Jedi was 91%. Audience? 43% 

 

Right now the new one is at 58% Critic and no audience score yet.

The kind of things critics want from a movie and the kind of things fans want from a movie can differ wildly at times. There were conspiracy theories at the time from angry fans about Disney paying off critics, but the reality is that viewers are not always seeking the same qualities in a movie. By backtracking so aggressively, Disney has alienated those who did support TLJ. It remains to be seen whether they will win audiences back.

JJ is a franchise manager. He has directed one original movie and even that was a rip-off of Spielberg.

 

I've grown out of Star Wars --- get off my lawn! -- but I have always got a kick out of the way JJ has fooled so many people into thinking he's some mega-talent. I mean, the guy has never made a great movie and he's only taken less chances the more successful he's gotten. It's wild. Apparently a super-nice guy though.

 

And to be fair to JJ, most visionary directors would want nothing to do with Star Wars -- for one thing, the suits wouldn't let you do what you want and the fan culture is so toxic why even bother?

Meh I just watched TLJ again tonight with my wife who hadn't seen it. She loved it. 
 

I still think it’s pretty fantastic. The casino **** is over so quickly it hardly gets in the way though I do wish Finn has been given something better to do. The Luke/Rey and Kylo/Rey scenes carry the movie and are all great. The movie hits emotional highs that really only comparable to the end of ESB and ROTJ in this series. It is a far better movie than any of the prequels and takes the series off the beaten path in many ways. It’s the most visually striking movie of the series too. Gorgeous in pretty much every shot. 
 

I recognize it’s flaws but they hardly break the movie. 
 

it’s easily top 3 for me after ESB and ANH

TLJ is the best looking movie in the franchise, boasts an excellent performance from Mark Hamill, crackles with energy whenever Kylo and Rey are interacting, and possesses a real sense of danger at times, which is something JJ would never have in one of his films. 

 

The casino plot is straight garbage and feels like a C plot from the prequels, plus there are numerous silly decisions that scream "I don't give a **** about this franchise but I'm an auteur and think this would be cool." It also does a terrible job of setting up the next film. Basically drives a Ferrari into a brick wall. 

 

You know what tips the scales in its favor for me? It makes people angry. Without a little bit of pushback, great series wither away and die. When I think of all the angry Star Wars nerds fuming over Luke chucking a light saber off a cliff and sucking down green titty milk, I fall in love all over again. And I'll never forget the sense of wonder and awe I felt in my theater when I saw that space kamikaze scene. Some kid actually shouted out "whoa," breaking a moment of absolute silence. Was it a fundamentally stupid plot decision? Yeah, probably. But the impact is what lingered, not the logistics. It was always meant to be a ****ing space opera. 

 

Sadly, I expect to never be surprised or awed by a Star Wars film ever again because of the response to TLJ. Disney won't let a movie like that one happen again.
