Sonny, Sam, & Frank

The Times has a great article on them:

But it's hard to imagine anyone else in the booth. Regardless of how their technical proficiency is assessed, Sonny, Sam and Frank are an institution. To Huff, the supreme compliment came a few years ago from noted WMAL radio personality Ed Walker, who is blind. Walker told Huff, "You guys make me see. When you guys broadcast, I can see the game."

And Snyder better not fix something that is not broken. I am part of the young crowd and don't mind the "old school" style of play by play. In fact I love Herzog's Touchdown, Washington Redskins.

Naturally, not everyone loves the trio, which comprises one of the oldest broadcast crews in all of professional sports. Huff and Jurgensen are 69 and Herzog is 58, and some in the business wonder whether they are out of touch with newer, younger listeners. Herzog is decidedly old-school — down, distance and formation. His call when the Redskins score — "Touchdown, Washington Redskins" — is unfashionably low-key in a time when play-by-play announcers are trying to get their touchdown calls on ESPN's SportsCenter. But for some listeners, Herzog and Huff sometimes get a little tangled up with identifying players, requiring Jurgensen, a stickler for accuracy, to step in.

Rumors of change have popped up, especially with Herzog in the final year of his contract. He said he has been told nothing about next year. Huff and Jurgensen would seem to be an entity, given the relationship between Jurgensen and Snyder, who grew up listening to the crew and is said to be a big fan. But no one is saying what will happen. WJFK general manager Alan Leinwand did not return several telephone calls.

Well hate to burst all of your bubbles, but this might happen sooner then we think. Synder does not have the last say on who does the radio.

He wields a lot of power when it comes to how Skins games are broadcast. I don't know the status of the Skins contract with JFK, but I know they quiver at the thougt of losing the Skins. In general, I don't see WJFK proceeding with a major change absent Snyder's blessing.

I guess I am the only one who thinks these guys form the worst radio broadcast team that currently covers an NFL team. They are, in my opinion, atrocious. You may be lucky, once a game, bettween the inane cackling, mispronounced names, misidentified players and general ranting on unimportant topics, to get some sort of useful commentary or clear description of what is happening on the field. I wish tme all well, and hope they are sent off into retirment in fine style - and we all get a broadcast team that performs the job in a professional manner.

Almost all local NFL broadcasts consists of homers who are local institutions. If you don't like them, just turn down the volume and watch the game on your radio in silence.

Frank, Sam and Sonny (who I think are great) aside as individuals, they are at the tail end of a generation. Sportscasters today all sound mostly alike. Can you tell the difference between Joe Buck and Thom Brennaman? I didn't think so. We have this kind of cookiecutter voice now that everyone does.

Give me guys like Harry Caray, Harry Kalas, and Frank, Sam, and Sonny for as long as we can get them, because once they're gone it will all be the same.

Sonny and Frank are fine but like someone else said Huff is just aweful. So often the things that he has to say make no sense what so ever or he is just completely wrong with what he's talking about. If they really feel like bringing in a new guy just replace Huff.

"Touchdown! Washington Redskins!" is a classic.

All announcers make mistakes with names and numbers - it just happens.

But Hertzog is a great announcer. Not only can he help blind men see the game, he can give them goose-bumps while doing it. Happens to me, even to this day, when I see/hear the replay of Riggins 4th and 1 at the 43.

"He's gone! He's gone! Touchdown! Washington Redskins!"

Gave me goose bumps just now.

Huff has got to go. He's like the old rambling grandfather who makes no sense.

I remember two or three years ago when someone in the stands threw a snowball at the booth and Sonny had to keep him from attacking the guy. He was completely old-man flustered for the rest of the game.

The first game of the year this year he got the coin toss wrong. What a start.

Seriously, if I just listenened to him on the radio without seeing the game I would have NO clue what was going on.

Trust me, the broadcast wouldn't miss a beat without his senile input.

How many times have you heard this:

3rd and 5, opposing team completes a pass for a 7 yard gain...

Sam: "Why didn't they blitz! The QB had too much time!"

same situation, but the team hits a back over the middle for a 7 yard gain,

"Why did they blitz! That leaves the middle wide open!"

Ugh....put him out to pasture already......

While the danny does not hve direst control over who does the games, if he wants Sonny, Sam and Frank there, they will be there. All snyder has to do is threaten to break off the Redskins contract with WJFK, (as he has done with so many other people/businesses) and they'll think twice about replacing them.

Dude they are the best, bar none. The only guys that give commentary who you can respect, because they played the game, and played it THE BEST. THey're HOF's which is so much more than the f*cking Collinsworths, Bucks, and other jokers.

But how much longer can they go? We gotta prepare ourselves here SS&F lovers. THat day will come. I say sign 'em for as long as they'll call 'em. Just wish they'd get a damn broadcast over the internet, or get picked up by a staion here in Chucktown. Not the geo challeneged (that's impossible to have on during the game cuz it lags so bad). You can't find a broadcast of them anywhere on the net but you can for almost any other team.....
