Zen-like Todd
Its been awhile since we've had a nice salary cap thread where we can discuss things we don't really have a handle on, due to the lack of NFL contract transparency. According to the magical Buddha Salary chart, Samuels' pro-rated signing bonus value hits us for 1.42 million under the cap each year. That's all well and good... his salary this year was only 755k. However, next year, his base salary balloons to 5.132 million, and then to 6.025 million in 2005, and 7.7 million in 2006. Yes ladies in gentleman, we're talking cap hits of: 2004: 6.5 million 2005: 7.5 million 2006: 9.1 million Now, that's a lotta money, g. I understand that top-tier left tackles are expensive in the NFL. And if Samuels was performing the way he was two years ago, I wouldn't be saying anything right now, and Snyder would be working to extend Samuels' contract in order to push some of those $$ farther down the road. But the simple fact of the matter is that Samuels simply isnt playing up to his contract. I don't expect us to cut bait on Samuels after this season. This roster turns over enough as it is, and the last thing Patrick needs is Joe Random/Shar Pourdanesh protecting his backside. If we cut him after this season, the accelerated signing bonus hit would be 4.2 million, saving us a grand total of 2.3 million dollars under the cap. If we were to cut him after next season (yes, I'm ignoring post June 1 cuts), we would be liable for 2.8 million under the cap, saving us 4.7 million dollars. And of course, we lose nothing but but 7.7 million dollars of payroll by cutting him before 2006 rolls around. So, while I think we are all in agreement that our first round pick needs to be spent on the defensive line, it may behoove us to snag a left tackle prospect to groom for the future. In the short term, he would be a legit backup left tackle, something we don't have on the roster. In the long term, he could be a remedy to cap hell. Then again, Samuels might pull a Courtney Brown and agree to a significantly reduced set of base salaries. Yeah, and the Wiz, Caps, and Skins will all win championships this year. fish
Didn't we do that with Dockery?
Could'a, Would'a, Should'a
the guy is a 26 year old pro bowl left tackle, he only went to hawaii last year... hes just having an off year, probably due to crap coaching...
Yomar
lets wait and see how he finishes out the year. He gets to face Michael Rucker this week, that will be a good opportunity for redemption
Zen-like Todd
Derrick Dockery is NOT the left tackle of the future. He simply doesnt have the foot speed. And Samuels did not play particularly well last year, a trend he is continuing this year. Listen, he's fine at left tackle. But is he fine at a cap hit of 7-11 million dollars a year? No. In a couple of years, we have some ballooning contracts, and you'll see us cut bait on some players (likely Wynn and Trotter, among others) as we reshape the team going forward. If only there was no cap...

Lachey79
I think that this thread is stupid. The man is 26 and is a pro bowler. hes had a bad stretch of games that can be mostly attributed to inexperience at QB, bad playcalling and bad coaching. He sure as hell looked great sunday though. No, you're stupid! Of course I'm joking with that statement, but its pretty assinine to ad hom a thread that is grounded in nothing but reality. 1) Stephen Davis was a great RB, but he had a 10 million dollar cap hit. Where is he now? That's right, Carolina. 2) Two years from now he will no longer be 26 3) Even if we keep him, we don't have anything resembling depth at the left tackle position. Do you want to trust Patrick's blindside to Pita Elisara or Brad Bedell? 4) In a couple of years, we will have some real decisions to make regarding the roster. That's just the reality of the situation based on some of the contracts we've made. http://home.earthlink.net/~wahoofamily/salary04.htm
NavyDave
Uh there is a thing called renegotiation of contract
laurent
Exactly NavyDave. Cutting Samuels at this point is absolutely ludicrous. We can easily just tear that contract up and renegotiate it. Despite his poor play this season I still believe that Samuels with the right coaching can be one of the best tackles in the league.

And if we continue to see the Samuels of last season and this season, it's simply not worth an expensive extension. Additionally... repeat after me... leverage and security. Two things you get by going after another left tackle prospect in the draft. Don't forget that when Ron Nay was interviewed last spring, he mentioned that the team might go after a tackle prospect. Now, we wound up with Dockery, but I don't think that's what he was talking about... I think that was simply a function of picking value at your draft slot. Dude... drop the pipe and read the message. I never advocated cutting him "at this point". Its silly and makes no sense, either from a football or salary cap perspective. And I believe you are being extremely optimistic/overly simplistic regarding "tearing up" his contract.
