Post SB thoughts.....that SS is probably thinking also

there have been some recent threads questioning whether SS's philosophy and our current player mix mesh. well....i think the current and recent SBs bring some thoughts to mind that will influence SS's thought process. Schott was right in some respects:

- it does appear as though defense wins championships

- it does appear as though a solid runnning game is key to any offensive scheme, no matter how pass happy in concept: the rams demonstrated this in the philly game, but apparently forgot in the SB. this also means that a physical O-line is critical

- a coaching staff's ability to adjust to tactical and strategic uncertainty can spell the difference between victory and defeat; martz failed to adjust in the SB

- team concept and execution outweighs individual excellence

i think SS knows this. he will take advantage of Davis - the only outstanding issue being whether SD is talented enough to expand his receiving skills. KC will also figure more prominently (if he stays). we will see a fairly balanced mix of run and gun (in addition to fun!). with lewis as the DC, the emphasis is going to be on stopping the run, with our secondary being the first line of defense against the pass, a pass rush being second (kinda obvious).

the lone intangible in all of this is a QB and how quickly the players can absorb new systems. we are going to pick up a DT one way or another, our DEs are servicable for another year. it appears the guards want to stay. i have adjusted my thinking - we may make a run next season, not just a push for the play-offs.

this could be an awesome season on the horizon!!!!!

[ February 11, 2002, 08:30 AM: Message edited by: fansince62 ]

Whether we can make a fair dinkum run at a SB depends on how well we use our available cap space to both fill the obvious starting holes we have and to get some key depth in here.

Right now we have key holes at DE, DT, OLB, G(2), C, WR(2), QB - so thats 9 players we need to get as starters. You could say that 6 of these 9 players are Redskin FA's (Lang, Barber, Szott, Coleman, Raymer, Westbrook) and if all were signed we would be looking for DT, WR, QB for starting roles.

Adams, Jackson, Blake come readily to mind here.

Then the key backups that we need - RB (Carter), QB (Beurlein/Graham), LB (Jones), FS (Woodson/Lyle).

We need some smart spending.

Well Szott's no long term answer, so we need to look at getting a rookie G probably this year at some point in the draft and get them ready for 2003.

If Raymer comes back it would be because we could not upgrade this year so a 1-2 deal (like he signed last time) would be the go.

The others could be more longer term (3+ years).
