The "a bunch of good things from this game" thread

Loved the TD drive in the 2nd quarter it was pure poetry. Loved the smash mouth football we played it reminded me of Parcells football, hold the ball keep the other offense off the field, keep the game low scoring.

Defense did well thanks to offense keeping them off the field and fresh.

Would have liked to see CT get out on the open on a screen pass so he can show his speed..

Wished the other WR's could have stepped up more after Djax went down, Garcon and Reed played great but didn't hear much of anything from anyone else.  Gruden said he liked what they did though, I guess it was from a run blocking standpoint..Carrier contributed.

The penalties and that miracle pick in the 4th did us in, I'm not faulting Cousins for that one. Overall if we play like this I don't see why we cant win 7 games..

Well, if you want to continue to wallow in misery, by all means do it, but I'm tired of being doom and gloom.  As a fanbase, we really need to stop with all this negativity.

ummm sorry no misery here, I am well past that. I am a wait and see fan now but facts dont lie, so dream all you want but for me I am done with seeing glimmers of change and hope, grasping at anything we see as good just to have them dashed to pieces with a dose of humiliation. Thats the problem with most ES'ers, they cant handle the truth and when some one speaks it you jump all over them. Simple truth pj this team even tho they did somethings right still stunk, 10 pts  omg we are going to set scoring records for sure, and who cares we missed a FG and let them run one back no biggy because some time in the next decade we will run one back of our own, BTW having a good half accounts for something but unfortunately having a bad half accounts for alot more, oh and 4 penalties in a row no problem cause with this offense we can get that 20- 30 yrds right back and then some or so what we just committed a dumb ass penalty costing us huge yardage, we can do it again, right?. And no worries that we still can not cover receivers consistently because they are bound to drop one anytime now. Speaking of dropping I can just hear the Db's and Lb's argument "hell if you want us to catch the ball we want WR pay" So again I say nope not miserable one bit just disgusted we just did the same things that we have been doing to lose games since forever. If these things were just once in awhile or spreadout with different mistakes in different games then they can be excused but, the Redskins do them all at once game in and game out and have been doing them  for years

As I break away from writing proposals and watching other sports, my mind drifts back to this game. I keep drifting back and forth between this being a carbon copy of last year's opener (negative outlook) or our physical, relatively young team being essentially one play away from beating a pretty solid team (positive outlook). Right now, I'm leaning more toward the latter...until the Rams kick our teeth in at home, that is.

If folks get out out of the win this year mindset, the view is easy.  We now have started building a foundation to win next year and the following year.  Last year we were a hot mess.

Good point - even if we win 1-2 games, if most of them are this competitive, it would be tough for me to be discouraged. Then again, I would hope we see a couple more wins :)

One good thing is that the Eagles and Giants join us at 0-1, so we're still right there in the division race lol

People are talking up the Eagles, but I'm afraid the Cowboys have this thing locked up by Thanksgiving. This division feels to me like it was in the early-2000s for Philly when they would be 11-5 and the other three teams would be 6-10.

I'd be surprised if Kelly doesn't string together some wins. The Cowboys weren't dominant on the ground this week and lost Dez for a while, they might have a tough go of it the first half of the season.

Good points. I didn't necessarily mean that Philly would be quite as bad as NY or our Skins. I see them regressing to 8-8 this year and Dallas winning 11-12 again. Then again, I guess you're right that they will be without Dez for half the season.

Fine, I'm convinced that we'll rise up and steal the East. :)

You know how annoyingly, unrealistically optimistic this place would be right now if we made one of any number of individual plays to win that game yesterday, and were at the top with Dallas in the standings? People would be talking about stealing a playoff berth and ****.

What could have been. :(

Gruden was the biggest negative of this game.  Draw play on 3rd and 13 deep in Miami's zone early in the game then 3rd and 3 run to Thompson deep in Miami's territory were crucial to the game.

I disagree.  With two rookies (Moses barely played last year before he was injured) on the right side of the line and missing their home run threat in Jackson I think Gruden played it just right.  The running game was churning out chunks and the defense was pretty solid up until then.  At home you don't need to take crazy chances.  So if Thompson can break it great.  If not?  Fine, just punt it away.  Unfortunately, our punter had one too many red bulls.

The only thing I'll lay at Gruden's feet are the penalties.  He absolutely has to get that mess fixed.  Although I think the refs were still a little too carried away there towards the end a lack of discipline ultimately is an issue for the head coach.

I'm definitely a big-picture guy with this team. I care more about how they look this year rather than how many wins they get. If they play like this each and every week, it would be tough to get down and not notice the progress. Granted, in the heat of the game I get into it and really want to see them go ahead and take a win that's sitting out there. In addition, I have to concede that there were some things that felt very much the same (penalties, turnovers, missed chances).

But, in the grand scheme of things, if I was presented with this (a close loss where we dominated an up-and-coming team for much of the day) before the season started, I'd have taken it. It's cliché, but maybe this team just needs to learn to close these games out and learn to win.

Play physical - check

Dominate the LOS - check

Control the clock - check

Watch young players step up - check

Hear the team sticking together with leaders emerging - check

There are so many positives that feel different (yes, I realize that's been stated several times since the mid-1990s) about this team. You never know until you know, but it seems like this could be the beginning of a team finding its identity and growing into something over the next couple years. I'm going to focus on the "how" more than the "what" with this team. If we continue pushing people around and just need to become more efficient, that would be a nice step up from some of last year's ugly outcomes.

It's probably the first time I can say since 2012 that this team had an identity.

Some good things, some bad things.  There's more good than bad, but the bad really overshadowed things.

I won't reiterate what's been said already about Morris, Moses, etc., but I will add that the game itself is good, in that we're no longer dealing with a constant stream of preseason scandals and media circuses surrounding the depth chart.  We can actually play some football.

An identity isn't one data point. Gruden needs to prove he can stick with the plan for this to become his identity. It was a goodish start. (Can't call it a good start because we lost and because of so many miscues)

We need more and better. Still, considering where expectations were... not bad at all.

I think we have a lot of god things to build on from this game. Many already pointed out but the thing I like the most was I saw some heart from our team.

And if you are on this board and continue to write one long droning paragraph please don't expect anybody to read it

Thats true, it does need to be consistent, but the fact that they said that this was how they wanted to play since March and then came out and did it and stuck with it means a lot.

The Defense was impressive, Morris was tough, but we still lost and are awful in every other area.

Btw,they better fine Suh for what he did to Morris.

Don't forget poking Moses in the eye. More in link below.

Warning, auto play video - all the rage on the internets / mute candidate for those "at work"

Back OT, the biggest single positive today was Scherf and Moses holding up vs a stout DL.

This week might be a bigger test.

Cause you know the Rams front 7 are gonna be looking at that film, and vowing that it's not going to happen to them.

It should be interesting to see how we adapt to them having film and how we adjust our running game. I am going through film now. Our line just straight up bullied the Dolphins (At least through the 1st half, haven't seen the 2nd half yet). However, the game plan was extremely conservative, which is understood, but they are going to need to open it up more and more as the season goes on. There were very few routes developing over 15 yards.

They have the chance to be one of those teams that say what they are going to do with running the ball and then go ahead and do it anyway. Hopefully we can figure out a way to get it to translate into points this week. The margin for error was pretty wide last week and we still blew it. 7 times in Dolphins territory and only 2 scoring drives is not going to cut it. But, ill take growth from last year in our first game of the year.

Ross is going to have to play a much larger role than initially anticipated. We are going to need his speed to help stretch the field. It helps that Cousins played a lot with him during the off and pre season, so timing between them should be good. Curious to see how Ross adjusts to in season play.

After watching the Falcons-Eagles game last night and comparing their performance with Skins:

1.  Skins OL did a much better job of protecting Cousins than the Eagles line for Bradford.

2.  Chris Chester is the starting RG for the Falcons and they are running the stretch zone blocking scheme.  Their OL is light and gets blown off the ball like the Skins in years past.  Skins OL is built for the NFC East again. Huge positive!!!!

3.  Skins top 2 WRs aren't as good but Falcons have a bigger drop-off with Hankerson as their #3 WR (and Williams!).

4.  Other QBs have interceptions too.  Falcons threw two picks and Eagles one.
