The "a bunch of good things from this game" thread

Amerson - don't need to explain this one. What a shame for a guy that we all thought was going to be a decent corner after his rookie year.

It sucks because again he flashed talent, made two great coverage plays in the endzone, right before gettin broke off on the TD...

The Good,

O line performed better than expected

Run game looks good and we stuck with it for the most part.

Physical attitude by the D.

Kirk isn't Elite, but you can win some games with the Guy imo.

The post game player remarks, accountability and team oriented . Kind of a big deal ,to me anyway.

The Bad,

Injuries..

Special Teams are "special" once again

Second half Adjustments by the staff. Just didn't see it esp. on offense. Why no screens? Thompson and crowder should be exceptional at those.

Pass rush was weaker than expected, double teams on 91 neuter it. Hope Preston gets more snaps.

No one on D except D. Hall has any ball skills ,still.

A few good things popped out today

1) Considering the challenge in front of them, Moses and Scherff played extremely well. I thought they were both physical, excellent in the run game, no major communication errors and pass blocked well enough. Very good sign

2) How about Preston Smith? The only pass rush was generated when he was in the game

3) The running game in general was excellent. Alf still has it, but I am looking forward to more from Matt Jones

4) Jordan Reed healthy is almost uncoverable. I am still holding out hope for him long term.

5) Passion and enthusiasm. These guys played hard the whole game. Not quite good enough, but that is ok. However they played incredibly hard and with fire.

Very pleased overall, a game we should have won. A ten point swing on special teams costs us, see Philadelphia last year. Overall a well coached game by JG in my opinion. Kirk should not be forcing the ball on 3-13 and after Kai kicked the first and when we were running the ball well I'm not angry about not going for it on 4-1. Penalties, two dropped picks and ST lost us the game today as simple as that. Some great individual performances in there, encouraging all round. Hope Djax is ok

Cousin's played ok. He appeared to be make quite a few pre-snap adjustments, I don't know if they were the right adjustments, but he seemed to be in control of the offense.

This is just a guess, but I would think that Cousins deserves SOME credit for the running success. He seemed to check into runs many times that worked. Again, I think the majority of the credit needs to go to Morris/Jones/Thompson and the OL. But it's nice to have a QB who can understand and read the D and put his teammates in a position to succeed.

Since this is for good things, I'll remain positive:

1. We were noticeably physical. We can go 0-16 but as long as we are more physical than the other team, I'm ok with that. (Hint: if you're more physical, you're not going anywhere near 0-16)

2. Alfred ran hard and had good vision...of course, he's always had good vision.

3. I liked th o-line play by the guards and tackles (trying to stay positive). In particular, liked what I saw from Moses and think sherff shows a lot of promise...especially against that d-line.

4. Our defense can't be accused of using stickum.

5. Hellloooo Jordan reed. He's a real problem for the defense.

6. Preston smith is quick off the ball and has power too.

7. Nobody on the punt coverage unit got hurt. Why take the risk?

8. Liked the qb play for the most part, movement in pocket, knowing where to go with ball, etc.

9. We re-used referee audio equipment from the Patriots.

Defense really looked good for the most part...and that was without Breeland. Having him in there will really give us some legit talent in the secondary if the rest continue to play as they did. Our corners could end up being really good. And the way they lined up made me stand and slow clap. Culliver and Hall were not giving cushions off the line of scrimmage (at least not consistently). And Culliver plays physical. Get Breeland back in there and we will have a CB core that receivers are not going to enjoy playing against.

The Nacho goin down hurts though. He was playing really well. Don't know what the deal with Jeron Johnson is, can't even get in as the back up? Gotta expect him to get the start next week right?

Good questions, I was wondering the same.  At the same time I've been hearing great things about T. Robinson, so it won't break my heart if he takes the spot and plays well.

This team is clearly not as devoid as talent as the team has been the past two years. So...step in the right direction......

I'm definitely a big-picture guy with this team. I care more about how they look this year rather than how many wins they get. If they play like this each and every week, it would be tough to get down and not notice the progress. Granted, in the heat of the game I get into it and really want to see them go ahead and take a win that's sitting out there. In addition, I have to concede that there were some things that felt very much the same (penalties, turnovers, missed chances).

But, in the grand scheme of things, if I was presented with this (a close loss where we dominated an up-and-coming team for much of the day) before the season started, I'd have taken it. It's cliché, but maybe this team just needs to learn to close these games out and learn to win.

Play physical - check

Dominate the LOS - check

Control the clock - check

Watch young players step up - check

Hear the team sticking together with leaders emerging - check

There are so many positives that feel different (yes, I realize that's been stated several times since the mid-1990s) about this team. You never know until you know, but it seems like this could be the beginning of a team finding its identity and growing into something over the next couple years. I'm going to focus on the "how" more than the "what" with this team. If we continue pushing people around and just need to become more efficient, that would be a nice step up from some of last year's ugly outcomes.

I wish I had the coolaide ya'll are drinking because what I saw was a bunch of the same ole things that has made us losers for the most part of 25 years. First of all injuries to key players, that aside, penalties negating positive plays, penalties making negative plays even worse, so so to poor special teams  ie missed FG and of course the run back for TD by the Fins. Turn over ratio not in our favor,  not enough pressure on the QB, wide open dolphin receivers and the thing that really kills me is one good half and one bad half. So go ahead with all the things you call positives for the team. But year after year the things I just mentioned is why we have sucked and we are continuing the trend already. Don't give the its only one game or its the first game crap either because its only been one game for years and just look how most of our losing seasons started out, with the first game looking like crap and the skins just continuing what causes them to loose year after year

add the fact they cannot intercept balls that are right in their hands

Well, if you want to continue to wallow in misery, by all means do it, but I'm tired of being doom and gloom.  As a fanbase, we really need to stop with all this negativity.

I'll point out a few things that I noticed, and I think they directly correlate to our losing the game.

I thought Duke Ihenacho was playing a good game, and I point out that much like what happened when Amerson came in, we only saw them start moving the ball once Ihenacho went out. I'm not sure that he would have done a better job covering Cemeron, but all of the completions came against Trent Robinson. I'm not hating on Robinson but maybe Duke is better than we've been giving him credit for...and I was surprised that Robinson was #2 at SS and not Johnson.

I was also impressed with Ryan Grant. He only had one catch for 15 yards, but I was beginning to think he was one of those great in practice but invisible on gameday type players. But he got thrown to twice and made one catch. Hopefully we see more of him (especially with the venom that Roberts causes to arise amongst the fans).

I didn't see Crowder on offense much or at all, but if Jackson is down for any period of time hopefully we can see how deep our WRs are.

Not saying that he had a great game, and the penalty against him helped lead to a three and out, but Cousins found Carrier twice in the passing game and we may have a decent backup option at TE this season as it develops.

What more can I say about Jordan Reed though. When healthy he is a legit target on this offense. Same goes for Garcon. Both these guys were active all over the field. The good and bad of this is that they took up about 19 of his 34 targets. Hopefully Cousins can distribute the ball around a little bit more and get Crowder and Grant (and Ross) involved more next game.

With the exception of the punt return, this loss was very different than most of our previous losses. This team showed heart. GM Scot has been at work.

It's a positive that the team was able to control the line of scrimmage for any stretch of time against a superior opponent with a defensive line as good as Miami's.

We controlled the LoS the entire first half. On both sides of the ball. Though that's not as encouraging on defense since our front seven is actually pretty solid and Miami's OL sucks.

The positive play of the OL is one of those surprises that shouldn't be a surprise. Go figure that you can spend a bunch of high draft picks on a position group and end up having the talent to match up with elite opponents.

When I first saw this thread, I was thinking it was going to be strictly sarcastic based on Jay's "the media's gonna say we suck but we are actually good" schtick in the presser.

This isn't meant as a slight to Scot or the guys he's picked up, but I certainly wasn't watching yesterday thinking this team fought their guts out and left their heart on the field.  I just saw a team that still sucks at special teams and loses winnable games by making numerous mistakes.

This loss was a lot like most of our previous losses. Perhaps the few blowouts are more memorable, but the Redskins lose games like this one all the time.  The Redskins are professionals at losing and find ways to do it in a number of different scenarios.

In the spirit of this thread, I guess the bunch of good things would be:

  • Saved hundreds of dollars watching from my living room.
  • Kirk is still alive and not in 14 pieces at the hands of Suh.
  • The defense didn't look as bad as I thought they would.  Whether its more the fact that the Dolphins offense stinks is yet to be seen.
  • I didn't take the Redskins w/ the points.

As a long time lurker, love the positivity on the board for a change, while I agree with Trent Williams that we're all getting tired of "moral" victories, and could really use some real wins, yesterdays game showed good amount of positives to build on.

1. Alfred Morris!! "The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated"- Mark Twain.  Hey the rookie Matt Jones looked good in preseason and all, but AlMo is 1,000+yd back ... season after season, great to see him ripping off chunks of yards, would've had more if not for a couple of unnecessary penalties.

2. D-line Hatcher, looked like his old self, applying pressure. Run Defense was stout, Preston Smith bringin some pressure, wish we had more qb pressure but I do believe we'll get better.

3. Oline played decent good run blocking and good pocket  protection for most of the game, had a couple breakdowns and penalties at inopportune times but def something to build on. Scherff, and Moses did well on the R side for the most part

4. D Hall played tough, coming back from his achilles injury showed up and held up pretty good.

5. Breeland is coming back, lol, hey I want Amerson to succeed, and get out of whatever slump he's going through, but it sure is nice to know that Brashad is comin back.

There's still a lot of work to be done .. Special Teams I'm looking at you lol, but hey this aint that thread.  Hail!!!
