The "a bunch of good things from this game" thread

You do get the feeling that this team is together and plays tough. You never know...I don't think many people realized that the 2010 or 2011 Seahawks were gelling into something.

I am excited that Gruden seems to like his guys and we established an identity by doing what we want to do, not scheming around our opponent's strength. Hopefully we see 15 more games of that identity and we forge a true contending team in the coming seasons.

Actually, with all the grief we give him... Lavaou deserves some props too. It wasn't only Scherff and Moses holding up their end. The middle held most of the game for the first time in forever.

Lauvao was alright. Kory was alright too except on the play where he whiffed on the block of Jordan Phillips. Phillips was shockingly quick on that play and he caught Kory with his pants down.

Ultimately, I think both of them are average starters at best. And that's fine. I think Moses can be pretty good. Maybe not as consistent as John Jansen was, but more physical. And as good as Randy Thomas was, I think Scherff has the potential to be way better. This OL could end up being better than the Dirtbags.

Gotta give props for the offensive game plan. I love that we smashed our way through the first half. Given we were still running in the 4th Q i have to hope this is the theme change I was hoping for.

The running game delivered

I dont think Jay went to conservative in the third Q but the flow of the game went against running the ball and I understand that .

The offensive line had a huge test this week and will have more coming up but I thought this might be a blood bath and it was kind of, but in the totally opposite direction I thought it would be. Good opening.

The D still needs work but could be a fearsome unit by the end of the season .

The penalties were bad and they need to be addressed but a lot of fight on the field

Bad outcome good game

Putting the penalties and ST breakdown to one side, I think there was some good things to take from the game.

Our OL handled Miami's DL pretty well. Run blocking was good and pass pro was better than expected.

Reports of Alf's demise because of the new scheme, may have been a little premature.

Cousin's played ok. He appeared to be make quite a few pre-snap adjustments, I don't know if they were the right adjustments, but he seemed to be in control of the offense.

Garcon has confirmed that he's a big tough receiver who fights hard for extra yardage and he deserves more balls thrown his way.

Reed has got all the tools to be a great TE, if only he can stay healthy. (I wanted to keep this all positive, but it's impossible to not mention his health).

Run defense is very good, especially up the middle.

Overall, quite a few good things to build on. Small acorns and all that.

I thought Scherff looked a lot better than the preseason results would have suggested.  Moses too.

Observation: Why does Garcon seem to do so much better when he is the first look?  He seemed invisible until Jackson got hurt, then all of the sudden went into beast mode.

Well Jackson got hurt super early so it's not really fair to say he waited to beast out until after the injury.

But when Jackson is out, obvoiusly the offense is going to focus more on getting Garcon the ball. And Garcon is a possession guy, he does better when he can catch 7, 8, 9 balls. He's not a one play big play guy like Jackson.

But man, if Jackson can get back healthy, I am excited about the potential for this offense. The playmakers looked good today.

I can't believe we don't have another deep threat when desean goes down

Yeh I don't see why Ross doesn't just play as Deseans back up. Run the same routes Desean would run. Obviously not as good but gotta respect the speed in the same manner. If Desean's out for a while I would expect Ross will see the field.

Defense played really well. I am excited about it. Dropped two picks, one would have been a pick 6 and Hall was a step slow on another potential pick 6.

Offensive Line played great. Alfred played great.

Cousins was decent enough. The first pick was a bad play but it didn't even hurt us.

Special teams got us again.

Didn't think Crowder played well...

Rather see him in there than Roberts. Guy seems to drop an easy pass every game.

The offensive line protecting  the QB in standard battles.  Obvi, still issues with blitzes but we didn't get abused on the right like i thought we would.

Ryan Grant blocking

Jordan Reed enough said

The defensive line looked fantastic.

Preston Smith looked like Demarcus Ware out there.

My take from the Game in Good/Meh/Bad forms:

GOOD:

Run Defense - they completely shut down Miami's run game. It was literally non existent. It was as advertised and they made Miami pay when they chose to go for it on 4th down in our redzone early in the game. They forced Miami to be one dimensional almost the entire game. Unfortunately the pass defense was not up to the challenge.

Preston Smith - the pass rush certainly looked better with him in there. You can see what Barry means when he says the kid has a ton of potential and can look great one play but make you kind of shake your head the next. That being said that strip sack and then ultimately the recovery, both by Smith, were very impressive. That was a play that could have, and should have been the difference in the game if the offense capitalized.

Alfred Morris - ever since preseason games started I've had to hear the Matt Jones crowd. You know who you are. Likely many of the same people that are always so enamored with the LeSean McCoy athletic freak type running backs. This is NOT to bash Jones. He's a very good looking rookie and played well today. But Morris just keeps being Morris. The most consistent player, both in terms of production and just the fact that he NEVER misses time, we've had since London Fletcher and who knows who since before Fletcher. The guy fits any system and there is a reason he is second only to Lynch in yards since joining the league. He finished several runs with authority and trucked several defenders. His numbers would look even better but he had a few big ones called back.

O-line/Scherff - Questions abounded all offseason about Scherff. The guy definitely answered the bell and if you asked me, regardless of being a rookie he won the battle today against Suh. Nuff said about Scherff. The O-line in general played well. Gave up a couple sacks but the Dolphins have one of the best pass rushes in the league. They opened up holes for the run game all day and gave Cousins plenty of time to throw on several occasions.

Garcon - nothing spectacular but that's never really been his game. A tough as nails receiver that made several grabs over the middle and on third down and had a couple deeper catches. Garcon was Garcon.

THE MEH:

Jordan Reed - in a game that should have been a "GOOD" for him, I simply don't think I've ever seen a player come off the field as much as he does. I'd chalk it up to football shape and spending most of the offseason healing but this has always been the case. Every year he's been in the league, while other players celebrate or head back to the huddle after a catch, every time he's on camera he's jumping up from a catch calling to the sideline for his sub. He's a huge weapon and yeah he should probably be up above but until he shakes the injury prone label and stops calling for a sub after every play he's involved in, he's here for me because you can't rely on him.

Kirk Cousins - I was actually pretty upset about the amount of people saying Kirk will be Kirk or something to that effect after his second int. Cousins had two bad throws all game. The first half pick was all on him - he flat out missed Grimes and that cannot happen. The end of the game throw to Reed was another - but I'm unsure if that was him or if Reed ran the wrong route. Impossible to know unless the coaches or someone tells us. Aside from that Cousins was efficient and accurate. People started throwing stones at the end of the game when Cousins was going downfield and on his second interception. That's BS. With the exception of one throw to Reed all of those throws were accurate passes to receivers in one on one coverage. To Garcon and Reed. That's what you do. You take those shots to your best offensive weapons. The defender making an exceptional pick is not on Cousins, that was the right throw and read on that play. The only other one I would take back was the throw to DJax - take about a yard off it and it's likely a TD despite DJax getting hurt.

DeAngelo Hall - his coverage and play overall today was actually stellar GIVEN he's coming back off a torn (then retorn) achilles. That being said, and I think this is more of a coaching thing, if one player is trying to strip the ball, he should be the only one. We need turnovers but three guys trying to strip the ball at once then the receiver breaking away is inexcusable. This happened multiple times today. Tackle the damn ball player.

THE BAD:

Culliver - pretty solid in coverage all day; sorry though buddy, when the qb gift wraps you a pick, possible a pick 6 and you drop it right into the receivers hands for what probably should have been a first down, you go here. Every year the whole offseason all the defense/defensive coaches talk about is preaching turnovers and how we need them. They're right, we do. Catch the damn ball.

Keenan Robinson - see above. Missing big (and EEEEASY) opportunities like these are what ran guys like Orakpo and Carlos Rogers out of town and on the flip side they are what made guys like Horton and Rob Jackson heroes even though they barely belonged in the league. I love Robinson but you HAVE to catch the ball.

Amerson - don't need to explain this one. What a shame for a guy that we all thought was going to be a decent corner after his rookie year.

Andre Roberts - this guy is a ****ing clown. I hate him. Strong words but it's the truth. He ****ing sucks. His hands are absolute garbage. He sucks at returning kicks/punts. He just let a ball bounce after a lateral that he again DROPPED that easily would have been six if it stayed in bounds due to his laziness. I understand keeping him on as a backup but why does he see the field. Grant and/or Crowder should absolutely be seeing plays in front of this guy. Wanted to hit this guy in the face because everything he did today is what he's done since he came here. On a big contract. And he ****ed and moaned when we signed DJax because he wouldn't be #2. He should be #6 BEHIND Rashad Ross.

SOME of the playcalling - Prefaced with NO ONE calls a perfect game. But singleback formation at the goalline with multiple receivers? When we've been killing them at the line all day? You go big and line up Darrel Young - either you give him the ball or run Morris right behind him. We got the TD but that was just stupid. Hell, QB sneak it or read option. Singleback outside run was a poor choice. And I was pretty surprised we didn't run some read option or more play action rollouts with Kirk - he's actually really good on the run and we didn't see any of that today. On the flipside of the ball, there were some screens or situational plays today where everyone in the world knows what's coming and the defense yields 20 yards and a first down on 3rd and long or something similar. That can't happen. I will openly admit much of the playcalling on both sides of the ball was pretty good today but some calls or just unpreparedness of the defense in an obvious position was just so bad.

The Injuries - are you kidding me?!?!? DJax on his first pass of the year. So relieved that DHall and Moses came back but Ihenacho hurt also. Guys were dropping like flies today.

I wish I had the coolaide ya'll are drinking because what I saw was a bunch of the same ole things that has made us losers for the most part of 25 years. First of all injuries to key players, that aside, penalties negating positive plays, penalties making negative plays even worse, so so to poor special teams  ie missed FG and of course the run back for TD by the Fins. Turn over ratio not in our favor,  not enough pressure on the QB, wide open dolphin receivers and the thing that really kills me is one good half and one bad half. So go ahead with all the things you call positives for the team. But year after year the things I just mentioned is why we have sucked and we are continuing the trend already. Don't give the its only one game or its the first game crap either because its only been one game for years and just look how most of our losing seasons started out, with the first game looking like crap and the skins just continuing what causes them to loose year after year

add the fact they cannot intercept balls that are right in their hands

Kirk Cousins is a competent enough game manager. He's fine when you can get the run game established, play with a lead, and put him in good leverage situations on second and third down.

He's typically not going to make something out of nothing though. Third and long is trouble. Playing from behind is trouble.

We will live and die by the success of our run game and defense.

Didn't think Crowder played well...

He looked like the best punt returner we've had since before Brandon Banks got hurt and started sucking.

He's small so unfortunately when guys get their hands on him he's going down. But I'm more than ready to see Crowder/Grant/Ross get ALL of Roberts' snaps. I throw up in my mouth every time I see that guy in a Redskins jersey. He's worse than worthless. He's a negative.

As a rookie, Jon Janses handled Michael Strahan.  Morgan Moses has quite a ways to go.
