Gunman 'injures three after firing Kalashnikov' on Amsterdam-Paris train: latest

A man has been arrested after firing a Kalashnikov rifle on board an Amsterdam-Paris train, according to French media.

Le Parisien reports that a Briton and an American are "seriously" wounded.

A third person, the French actor Jean-Hugues Anglade, was also wounded and is said to have raised the alarm.

La Voix du Nord, a newspaper in the Calais region, said a man was arrested on suspicion of firing the weapon on a Thalys train near the northern town of Arras.

Police say that have not ruled out terrorism as a possible motive and Bernard Cazeneuve, the French interior minister, has been summoned to the region.

The gunman, said to be of "North African origin," is said to have been "taken down" by a group of US marines onboard the train.

France train shooting: Americans overpower gunman

Three people have been hurt after a heavily armed man opened fire on a train in northern France, before being overpowered by two American passengers.
The incident happened on the high-speed Thalys service near Arras, and the attacker was arrested at Arras station.

The interior minister praised the Americans, one of whom was seriously injured, as was another passenger.

The man arrested was a 26-year-old Moroccan. Anti-terrorist officers have taken over the case.

The weapons were said to include a Kalashnikov, a knife, an automatic pistol and cartridges.

One of the two people seriously hurt had a gunshot wound, the other a knife wound.

French media said the arrested man was known to the intelligence services. The suspect has so far refused to talk to police in Arras.

Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel said the incident was a "terrorist attack".

French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve travelled to Arras in the wake of the attack.

He said: "As always where an act that could be terrorist in nature is involved, the greatest care and the greatest precision will be used."

He praised the Americans who overpowered the suspect.

Mr Cazeneuve said they were "particularly courageous and showed great bravery in very difficult circumstances", adding: "Without their composure we could have been confronted with a terrible incident."

French media said the passengers who overpowered the suspect were US Marines who had heard the man loading a weapon in a toilet cubicle and confronted him when he came out.

Very courageous US military guys, we're praising and thanking them. Seeing the traces of blood on the window and on the #@s%'s pants, it looks like he got his ass kicked the hard way. I wish we had more people like those brave guys.

Hail to them.

It's not in the US only that you see that, we've got plenty of the same people here. It happens every month, people getting assaulted, raped in front of others who are just turning their heads away.

I hope you'll never have to face this situation, and as Chipwhich said, if you do, I hope you'll get the corones to step up.

Edit: I hope our lousy socialist politicians will do the right thing here and hand those guys the Legion of Honor medal which is one of the highest honour awarded by the french republic.

"I looked back and saw a guy enter with a Kalashnikov. My friends and I got down and then I said 'Let's get him'," Alek Skarlatos, a 22-year-old member of the National Guard in Oregon, told France's BFMTV.

Spencer Stone, who is reportedly in the US Air Force, was the first to reach the gunman who slashed him in the neck and hand with a box-cutter.

"At that point I showed up and grabbed the gun from him and basically started beating him in the head until he fell unconscious," said Skarlatos, who recently returned from service in Afghanistan.

See, thats where I disagree. Not that I want it to happen, but if it does, I want to be there if it does because I know that I will do something.

Spencer just got out of hospital, he's doing well. The french-american who took the AK47 off the #@s%'s hands and was injured by a knife is doing well too, recovering in hospital.

The French who got face to face with the #@s% trying to acces the toilets failed to take the AK47 off his hands. He expressed his rights for anonymity. Thanks to the brave US soldiers who took care of the situation and saved many lives.

US student tells of his attack on French train gunman

My son, said a visibly shaken American father, left his Sacramento home to travel abroad for the first time, as a “young man on an excursion to broaden his world view and have fun with his buddies”. Now, said Tony Sadler, he’ll be coming back “as France’s national hero”.

As two presidents, Barack Obama and François Hollande, yesterday poured praise on four men whose actions averted a bloodbath on the 3.17pm train from Amsterdam to Paris, with 550 passengers onboard, the details of what happened on the Thalys express 9364 emerged in shocking detail.

It was at 5.45pm, as the train crossed the Belgian border into northern France, that a 28-year-old French bank worker left his seat and tried to get into the toilet on coach 12. The door opened on a shirtless dark-haired man, in white trousers and trainers, who was holding a Kalashnikov across his bare chest. Inside his rucksack were nine full magazines of ammunition, holding 280 rounds, and several knives. Somewhere he also had a handgun.

Over the next few seconds there was chaos. A shot rang out, a French-American passenger fell forward in his seat, hit in the neck by a bullet from a handgun. Then came a terrifying “click, click, click” as the half-naked man held his AK-47 aloft, aiming an apparently temporarily jammed gun at occupants of the carriage.

As panicking passengers, helpless in their seats, realised there was an armed man in their midst, the train crew ran through carriage 11 towards the guardroom at the end of the train, barricading themselves behind a steel door, leaving people outside banging on it.

Meanwhile, in carriage 12, three American childhood friends had been sitting chatting about their night ahead in Paris. They were Anthony Sadler Junior, 23, a final-year student from Sacramento State University, Alek Skarlatos, 22, a member of the Oregon national guard, who was on holiday after a tour of duty in Afghanistan, and Spencer Stone, a member of the US air force. It was the sound of the gun being breeched that caught the soldiers’ attention.

“I just looked over at Spence and said, ‘Let’s go’. He jumped up and ran, grabbed the guy by the neck. I got the handgun off him and threw it,” Skarlatos told reporters afterwards.

But Sadler said Stone had to run the length of the carriage in full sight of the gunman. “We didn’t know if the gun wasn’t working or anything like that. Spencer just ran anyways and if anyone had gotten shot, it would have been Spencer and we’re just very lucky that nobody got killed.”
