i rooted my android phones to get rid of the tracking carriers installed on their phones, or the apps they required you to have, and because android is frustratingly fragmented and you had to wait for manufacturer approval then carrier approval for updates to the OS.

but above all i did it because, hands down, the reskinning of android done by motorola, samsung, htc, LG, sony, and whoever else is out there IS TERRIBLE.  pure android is awesome, and every single one of them manages to make their phone have crappier battery, random sync issues with different services, delay OS updates, etc. why? Because they want something unique to their brand that makes you want their phone.

ugh.

so happy blackberry left pure android and all they did was secure the kernel and throw some apps on there that you could use, or not use, depending on preference.

They also do this because they want to lock down some of the android OS features behind pay walls. Nearly all the carriers want to charge you for using your phone as a mobile hotspot. Which is ridiculous. In your house, you don't pay your ISP additional money determined by how many devices you have online. Your phone should be no different. Yet they'll want you to pay $20/month for that feature for a limited amount of data. Unlocking and rooting prevents the carrier from detecting you're using a mobile hotspot because you're not using their stock ROM anymore.

The sad thing is it's only getting worse. Instead of backing off and stopping this nonsense carriers like Verizon have just dug in deeper to prevent their customers from enjoying the full potential of their phones.

This charger cord for the gs4 is frayed and the insides are showing, plus the insulation inside. The cord inside the plastic sheath seems intact but there are charging issues now and I can't go on much longer with this broken ****. Has anyone tried purchasing replacement Samsung chargers off eBay and did they charge? I did buy another charging cord from T-Mobile but it's not charging at the same speed.

Android devices suffer the same thing PC's have suffered in their existence.  Bloated Vendor-ware ruins the device/pc.  My buddies Samsung is a piece of ****.  It's so slow because of everything Samsung does to it.  The beauty of the iPhone and the Apple computers is a clean OS environment.  This Vendor-ware not only leads to slow performance, but it adds security flaws to the device.

There is a reason Steve Jobs didn't want it to be open.  And the reasons weren't all bad.

I am curious if the new Microsoft PC resolves this problem.  Do they deliver it like Apple does?  Nothing on the machine but a clean OS load.  That is step one in making Windows a better operating environment.

That's the reason, when I used Windows, that I build all my PC's custom and loaded a fresh Windows. I could control all the bloat.

I haven't had a regular use PC in my house for a couple of years at least now. There is no reason for me to own anything other than a laptop for what my home use is. Just so happens that my laptop (MacBook Pro) works perfectly with my primary use device, my iPhone.

I take a picture on my phone, it's on my laptop when I open it up. I make a playlist on my phone (in Apple Music), it's on my laptop when I open it up. My emails span across both devices. Text messages, phone calls, etc.

My home computer usage is simply to support my phone.

Being open isn't what fails Android, it's that the vendors are closing out the user, but I guess they're more of dicks about it than Apple. If it were actually open open, then the users would have the power to **** all that vendor **** to oblivion and take control over their phones.

Related note, a method to root Android OF1 was released a few days ago and I'm gonna give it a spin. Really hope it works out so I can kill all that bloat and tell applications that wish to mine my data to **** right off.

Like everything you said but wanted to comment on this.

We've been rolling out surface pros and everyone loves them. Developers, accountants, designers, execs.

I just set one exec up that's the definition of an Apple fanboi. Since 2007 the guy has used nothing but apple products. Even for his home router. He loves his surface. I was worried because he had to switch to PC for job requirement changes, and I really pitched the surface the same way I did above. I was concerned he wouldn't like it. He absolutely loves it.

Amazing what having control of your hardware does.

Sounds less like a cord problem more like an amperage of the powerblock problem. Look at the amp output on the one that came with the phone, find one that matches.

So much for Apple being and intuitive and issue free. Yes, it never was fully but I think it's been getting worse. The latest OS update to El Capitan is super buggy. iTunes is anything but intuitive anymore.

Any Apple user knows you never update right away.  This is nothing new.  You want to look at intuitive, Microsoft updated Windows last release and removed the start button.  It was a fiasco.

I know. I waited about a month and a half and, if memory serves correctly, that's usually been a safe amount of time.

I know, I complain, but the alternatives aren't really alternatives.

Bout time you got yourself a PS4 brosef.

PhotoDNA has become the standard solution for automated processing of imagery at Internet scale. But the requirement for local installations meant hardware and IT know-how, preventing PhotoDNA from being more widely used, especially by smaller companies. In July 2015, though, Microsoft moved PhotoDNA into its Azure cloud and offered qualified Internet companies access to the tool via a REST application programming interface. PhotoDNA is free to use—and companies like Facebook, Twitter, and Kik all do—but it has one significant limitation: it does not currently work on videos.

So our whole business is running in Windows 7. One large database and probably around 20 networked computers.

So one of my employees, before I get to work this morning, decides to click on the free Windows 10 popup that happens when Windows 7 loads. "Hey, I can't get my printer to print" he tells me. "I clicked this and knew it was going to be a problem" he says.

What the actual ****!?

So as it turns out, it wasn't that big of a deal because he doesn't use the service writing software that the majority of the other machines use so there isn't any sort of database issue. The only thing I needed to "fix" was getting his printer to connect. All the network printers showed up which was great. The printer which he uses, that is connected via USB, was a little more difficult for some reason though.

Windows 10 looks slick. That's my only experience with it so far. Not completely awful.

I picked up a new hp laptop last week, with W10 and it's amazing.

I'm not knowledgeable about computers or tech in anyway, but my last laptop, Toshiba W8, sucked rhino ass.

This thing is bad ass fast, easy to use (even for my caveman know how) and slick. I'm loving it.
