More info regarding the backwards compatibility:

Following the announcement, Xbox's Mike Ybarra went into further detail about how the backwards compatibility will work. Both downloadable and retail titles will work and will appear directly in players' libraries alongside their Xbox One titles. Games will support online multiplayer, as well as all of the enhanced Xbox One capabilities like screenshots, broadcasting, Game DVR, and game streaming to Windows 10.

While not all Xbox 360 titles will be available, Ybarra says that developers will not need to do extra work to make their games work on Xbox One. All developers need to do to make their Xbox 360 games playable on Xbox One is approve them.

Xbox One players will not need to pay extra to gain access to Xbox 360 games they already own. Xbox One's backwards compatibility will be available later today for Xbox Preview members with a few titles. Everyone else will be able to access hundreds of Xbox 360 titles on Xbox One this holiday season.

The release only stated PS4 and XB1 so far. I know what you mean, the graphics were't the best but this is one of my go to examples of why graphics don't matter. The art style and the gameplay more than make up for the graphics.

Agreed, but i also thought the game was a bit short. Still, an HD version would be nice ....

I know about the download part, but that still doesn't explain the mechanism for playing the games made for the 360's hardware.

I suspect it's some type of emulation - and they have had a few years to work on it. It doesn't seem to far fetched (in my puny brain) to believe that software that can run One games can be tweaked (or added on to with updated firmware) to run some 360 games.

From that link..

Update: Microsoft updated its website with more information about the new program. The page confirms that this applies to digital and disc games, cross-console multiplayer is included, and it will pull over your cloud game saves, achievements, Gamerscore etc. This PDF lists all the games it currently works with -- excuse me while I dig up my Perfect Dark Zero Collectors Edition.

I find emulation a bit unlikely. I mean, the Xbone isn't all that powerful especially considering that emulation is not a very parallelable process (the low per-core throughput is far from ideal). Hell, with Wii emulation you want to have a top-of-the-line Intel Desktop processor, I don't see an AMD mobile processor getting the job done for 360 emulation.

Only if Microsoft consulted you before making such a big announcement.

I'm not saying there isn't a mechanism by which they can play the games, I just want to know what their plan is. Are they having games recompiled for the new architecture? Are they doing an on-live type thing where processing is done off-site (maybe they have some way of reducing off-site processing to reduce latency and that's why it needs local content on HDD).

I'm really just trying to figure out how they are planning to accomplish it.
