Chicago Police Have Been Sabotaging Their Own Dashboard Cameras on Purpose

Just when you thought the scandal-ridden Chicago Police Department was ready to collapse under the weight of its own idiocy, it goes and does something like this. According to DNA Info,80% of dashboard cameras in CPD patrol vehicles don't record audio — either because officers are activating them incorrectly, or because they're intentionally damaging or concealing them.

This troubling revelation sheds light on what happened the night of Oct. 20, 2014, when Officer Jason Van Dyke — who was recently released on bond after being charged with first-degree murder — shot and killed a 17-year-old, unarmed black boy named Laquan McDonald. The incident was recorded by multiple police dash cameras, but many of them did not record audio, including Van Dyke's.

Well see, the incident was investigated and no wrongdoing was found. See, the system works! ...or does it?

LAPD found no bias in all 1,356 complaints filed against officers

The Los Angeles Police Department did not uphold any of the 1,356 allegations of biased policing by officers that the agency investigated in recent years, according to a report by the Police Commission's watchdog.

The numbers, which covered 2012 to 2014, prompted the president of the Police Commission to call Tuesday for a “deep-dive briefing” from the LAPD on how the investigations are conducted.

“We need to take a look at it,” said the panel's president, Matt Johnson.

In an interview, Johnson said claims of biased policing — police parlance for racial profiling — were among the most serious accusations that could be levied against the LAPD.

“I don't think anybody believes that there are actually no incidents of biased policing,” Johnson said. “The problem is we don't have an effective way of really adjudicating the issue.”

See the most-read stories this hour >>
The report from Inspector General Alex Bustamante tallied the number of investigations that were completed by the LAPD during the three-year window.

Commissioner Robert Saltzman echoed Johnson's remarks, calling the lack of substantiated allegations “quite troubling and disappointing.”

“While no doubt the vast majority of LAPD officers do not engage in biased policing, it strains credibility to suggest that ... there were zero instances of biased policing,” he told The Times. “It should not be surprising that there is diminished trust in the LAPD given these results.”...

Wow, shocking.

Right?  And news has come to light that ATLPD will be suspending their body camera program...feel warm & fuzzy yet?  (It was a story on WSB, I don't have a link, just saw the story a day or two ago on the air.)

We just can't catch a break here.  Good grief.

"11Alive News' Kaitlyn Ross spoke to Atlanta City Council members Tuesday who told her that one of the companies that lost the bid for the cameras filed an injunction, forcing the city and APD to halt the trial period and start the bidding process from scratch."

Now now, Roger, this thread is only for police hate. Let them have it! To hell with the injunction, down with the po po

Your attempt to present a load of untrue spin about this thread (as an attempt to accuse THE THREAD of being biased) might have worked better if you'd managed to post it BEFORE skinsmarydu's post (which shows your claim to be untrue) was posted.

Your ability to take everything so serious is admirable. I definitely don't think that about Mary, which is who it was directed at, i was joking with her. Hell goofy, i read her post BEFORE making mine.

White cop to sue estate of black teen he killed

A white police officer plans to sue the estate of a black teenager he shot dead because he was traumatized by the fact that he accidentally killed the teen's neighbor in the incident, his lawyer said.

"The damage is my client feels horrible that Bettie Jones is dead because of the actions he was forced to take," attorney Joe Brodsky told AFP.

"It's affected him greatly. It's a burden he's going to have to carry for the rest of his life."

The December 26 shooting came as the US city was reeling from a series of incidents in which police were accused of being too ready to pull the trigger.

The family of Quintonio LeGrier, 19, has repeatedly said there was no reason why police should have opened fire when responding to a domestic disturbance at their home. They have sued both the city and the officer who shot him: Robert Rialmo, 27.

A wrongful death suit filed by LeGrier's father, Antonio, argues that the teen "never had possession or control of a weapon" and was not a threat to Rialmo or anyone else at any point.

Rialmo was standing outside when he opened fire on LeGrier, who was inside the building, the lawsuit said. Antonio LeGrier is also suing for wrongful arrest after police made him leave his dying son in order to file a statement about the incident.

City officials have apologized for the death of Jones, a 55-year old mother of five, but have said LeGrier's shooting was justified.

The city has released few details about the incident except to say that LeGrier was brandishing a baseball bat when he was shot after his father called for help in the early hours.

LeGrier, an engineering student who was struggling with mental health problems, had called 911 for help several times earlier that evening but the dispatcher did not send an officer to the house until his father called.

Brodsky said that makes the incident a "double tragedy because if my client had advance knowledge he was dealing with a mentally ill person he may have handled this in a different way.

OH, GASP! Poor baby! I bet he's so very traumatized. I hope wins his suit and cleans out this wealthy teenager's estate so that he can somehow manage to put the wreckage of his damaged psyche back together. What a sorry sack of crap and what an obvious grab at the $$$ the city will have to pay for his wrongfully shooting this kid. Motherless ****.

And then there's these gems.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpI2D_bUh8U

Note that one thug, 'er officer serves as lookout while this is going on and strategically aims his body camera while his fellow thugs yell "stop resisting" and at another point, a body camera is turned off. Clearly this isn't a spur of the moment thing and most likely wasn't their first time. It's a well rehearsed ballet by all the officers present. And as usual, the only reason anyone even looked at this wasn't due to any investigation about the manipulation of body cam footage but because there was separate surveillance footage that showed they were a bunch of lying sacks of crap. So again, this wasn't a case of a single bad apple, it was five of them acting in concerted fashion to beat up a guy offering no resistance whatsoever. And people wonder why some of us are angry about a double standard when seeing a bunch of yahoos armed to the teeth get mollycoddled by the FBI that they consider a bunch of Nazis while in the meantime, this kind of thing goes on without much of an outcry. And yes, I get that the Oregon case involved Federal agents and these are local cops. Sorry but it shouldn't matter. I expect a similar level of professionalism from both.

And for all you folks who love to point out that Officer Friendly just helped a little old lady across the street, the fact that one of the officers in this case previously won multiple awards clearly shows that Officer Friendly's good deeds today say nothing about whether he brutalized someone at some other time.

Award-Winning Florida Deputy Indicted for Beating Non-Resisting Man in Surveillance Video
Florida deputies chased a suspected drug dealer for a mile before he stopped, raised his arms, fell to his knees and laid himself facedown on the ground in an obvious attempt at surrender. The five Marion County deputies then hopped out of a truck and proceeded to beat him for 30 seconds; kneeing him, kicking him, punching him – all while yelling “stop resisting.”

They later claimed Derrick Price was combative and resisting, which was why he had a black eye in his mugshot. But Price accused them of excessive force and a surveillance video proved him right. That video was released Wednesday, more than 17 months after the August 7, 2014 incident. On Tuesday, fired deputy Jesse Terrell was indicted for violating Price’s civil rights. Terrell, along with the other four deputies who pleaded guilty last year, are now are facing prison sentences.

...Terrell, who is described as having “multiple commendations, including awards for being top producer and Eagle Eye awards” is scheduled to make an initial appearance in federal court on February 4.

I find it frustrating that people still cling to the belief that police abuse is simply a matter of bad apples.  That's like arguing bad neighborhoods have crime entirely because of a few bad apples.  Nothing else going on, no other problems that need to be looked into, just a random occurrence that could happen anywhere and is entirely unavoidable.

They have a difficult time admitting that a previously held belief they've had for a very long time about say, police officers, or a racial prejudice aganist a certain people, was wrong and they need to reevaluate this. It's just easier to make excuses for why it happens, ignore the truth, and go on about your day.

Flint Inmates Lied To About Water Crisis, Forced To Drink Lead Water

Back in October, the Genesee County Health Department declared a public health emergency, telling the residents of Flint, Michigan to stop drinking the city’s tap water due to dangerously high levels of lead. Two months later, the mayor of Flint declared a state of emergency, saying the city’s pipes were still leaching lead. The National Guard ramped up the distribution of bottled water to residents in January, one year after state officials received bottles.

But while Flint residents scrambled to get bottled water and filters, one group was kept in the dark about the risks posed by the tap water: inmates doing time in Genesee County Jail. According to an exclusive report from Democracy Now!, the facility lied to inmates about the water quality and forced them to drink and bathe in the water. Inmates, including pregnant women, also ate food cooked with the tainted water.

While inmates consumed and touched the water, jail staff avoided it altogether.

“Many inmates made complaints, due to the fact that the deputies would not drink from the faucets. They all carried bottled water,” Cramer said. When he alerted his mother about what was happening, she visited the facility to find answers. A deputy told her that the jail had a filtration process in place.

I know :(. I exist in a dualistic state of idealism and cynicism.

Lol. What were you thinking? That there's a movement in this country that actually cares about protecting human life? Oh wait, it's only a certain zygotic class of human life they care about. Edited by The Sisko

An Ohio cop was placed on leave after cruelly calling the death of a Black Lives Matter activist "a happy ending.”

Fairborn Police are investigating whether Officer Lee Cyr violated the department's social media policy with his crass Facebook comment about MarShawn McCarrel, who killed himself on Ohio’s Statehouse steps Monday.

“Love a happy ending,” Cyr wrote Wednesday in response to an article about the 23-year-old’s suicide.

Seriously, the level of apathy in this country about a whole host of issues is downright depressing sometimes.

odd the level of vitriol at poisoning of the levels common in my youth vs slaughter
