Running game...

Die Hard

Recommended Posts

Haven't seen this even mentioned yet. A bit of a surprise.

But did anyone else notice how effective the running game was today? I thought after a few big runs and consistently running the ball for 5 years every touch... Spurrier would eventually clue in.

I actually felt we would win the game if Spurrier starting running the ball.

the problem there was that Chad Morton got hurt just when he was starting to hurt the Cowboys defense.

Morton at just 5'8 and 186 will never be more than a shake and bake back, a guy who you give 5-6 touches as a changeup.

The Redskins in retrospect made a mistake by releasing Kenny Watson.

You can't blame that one on Spurrier. He thought Watson's work ethic and contributions on special teams/locker room were important ingredients to have.

Cerrato thought McCullough and Todd Franz were too important to let go.

Morton, McCullough and Cartwright averaged around 6 yards per carry, but the Dallas defense knows that Spurrier is not going to pound the ball and is going to abandon the run. So Dallas just keep blitzing and the Skins wind up being one dimensional as usual. :puke:

I can't believe the Skins were a PLUS FOUR in turnovers and still got BLOWN OUT. :puke:

Dan T, there was a reason why Sutan was inactive the first 6 games and never played until the last one... He wasn't ready, !!!! and it showed Sunday... This whole FN team is a joke and it started long before the sissention with the FO and Coaches over cuts... It started when he spent our 1st RD pick on Taylor Jacobs......

I can understand the owner perhaps stepping in when it comes to a coach wanting to cut a #1 draft pick or something like that, but for Snyder and Cerrato to micromanage the roster so that Wuerffel and Kenny Watson HAD to be cut when Spurrier wanted to keep them is just beyond me :)

You hire a guy for $5 million a year and then don't let him make the decision on who the #3 tailback is going to be on your club?

This just gets dumber and dumber each season.

why can't spurrier see the light?

what is so hard to understand about using the running game to take pressure off your QB?

just see the light steve. the problem wasn't that he was being NFLized....it was that he hasn't been NFLized enough.

OPEN YOUR EYES SPURRIER!

As a coach.. your responsibility is to coach whatever players you have. He wasn't brought on to be to fill the GM role. In fact, it appears all the coaches who have held both roles (ie. head coach and GM) have failed and have had to surrender their GM titles.

The Bucs have had plenty of disagreements between coach and management as well since Gruden took over. Remember Gruden wanted Rob Johnson over Brad Johnson? Remember the Emmitt Smith situation? There were also questions about the Darrell Russell situation as well.

So let's not be so naive to think that teams cannot be successful where the GMs and Head Coaches don't necessarily see eye-to-eye on everything. It's a common reailty for every NFL team.

I just can't believe we have the highest paid coach in the NFL right now.

yeah, Diehard, BUT while I remember Bobby Beathard being charged with bringing in the players I also remember that Joe Gibbs had final say, in all but the most unique cases, on who REMAINS through camp to be on the opening day roster :)

Again, we could have used Watson not only as a running back but as a special teams peformer.

Now we are down to using a punt returner who weighs 186 to run the ball with a 5'7 and 223 fullback switching over to share the load.

Neither player rushed for 100 yards twice last year as Watson did for the Redskins :)

Here's the play-by-play from NFL.com, for all out plays in the second Q.

1-10-WAS20 (14:49) C.Morton left end pushed ob at WAS 27 for 7 yards (D.Woodson).

2-3-WAS27 (14:22) C.Morton left tackle to WAS 37 for 10 yards (D.Coakley).

1-10-WAS37 (13:37) P.Ramsey pass incomplete to L.Coles (A.Singleton). Pass knocked down.

2-10-WAS37 (13:33) P.Ramsey pass to C.Morton to WAS 44 for 7 yards (R.Williams). Pass complete middle.

3-3-WAS44 (12:59) PENALTY on WAS-K.Ware, False Start, 5 yards, enforced at WAS 44 - No Play.

3-8-WAS39 (12:36) (Shotgun) P.Ramsey pass incomplete to R.Gardner. Penalty on WAS-C.Samuels, Offensive Holding, declined. Pass too tall right sideline; Newman closest.

4-8-WAS39 (12:28) B.Barker punts 36 yards to DAL 25, Center-E.Albright, out of bounds.

----------------

1-10-WAS27 (7:00) R.Cartwright left tackle to WAS 33 for 6 yards (D.Coakley).

2-4-WAS33 (6:24) R.Cartwright up the middle to WAS 37 for 4 yards (W.Blade; D.Stewart). Dallas' Larry Allen has a sprained left knee and was taken to the locker room to be examined; Flozell Adams has a right shoulder contusion, his return is questionable.

1-10-WAS37 (5:46) P.Ramsey pass incomplete to R.Gardner. Quick slant from left end; Edwards was the closest defender.

2-10-WAS37 (5:43) P.Ramsey pass incomplete to R.Gardner. Pass floated right sideline at the Washington 47; Newman closest defender.

3-10-WAS37 (5:39) (Shotgun) P.Ramsey pass incomplete to R.Gardner. Pass thrown left side; Newman was the closest defender on the play.

4-10-WAS37 (5:34) B.Barker punts 43 yards to DAL 20, Center-E.Albright. J.Galloway to DAL 35 for 15 yards (B.Johnson).

-------------------

1-10-WAS28 (3:29) R.Cartwright right tackle to WAS 43 for 15 yards (R.Williams).

1-10-WAS43 (2:50) P.Ramsey pass incomplete to L.Coles. Pass thrown middle; incomplete at the Dallas 39; Newman was the closest defender. Glover with heavy pressure on the play; Samuels of Washington is shaken up on the play.

2-10-WAS43 (2:44) P.Ramsey sacked at WAS 34 for -9 yards (R.Williams).

3-19-WAS34 (2:12) S.McCullough up the middle to WAS 43 for 9 yards (D.Nguyen).

4-10-WAS43 (2:00) B.Barker punts 46 yards to DAL 11, Center-E.Albright. J.Galloway ran ob at DAL 28 for 17 yards (T.Franz). Return right sideline; Franz was shaken up on the return.

Now, if you ignore the 'trash' nine-yard gain on 3-19 (which still gained more yardage that all our 2nd-Q passing combined), then we still had five carries for 42 yards, which I would define as "working".

Running the ball accounted for all (three) of our first downs in that Q.

For the game as a whole, we ran on first down 9 times. And 8 of those times we moved the chains or scored. (Eventually. Not necessarily on that play.) (Including once when we ran on 1st-15.)

We threw on first down 12 times, and moved the chains or scored 4 times. (Two of those 4 successes were by our backup.)
