REDSKINS MAKE ROSTER MOVES

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have promoted safety Phillip Thomas to their active roster from the team’s practice squad and waived defensive end Clifton Geathers.

Thomas (6-0, 223) was originally selected by the Redskins in the fourth round (119th overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft. He spent the 2013 season on the team’s Reserve/Injured list.

Geathers (6-8, 325) joined the Redskins as an unrestricted free agent on March 14, 2014.

Can anyone update the status on Barry Coffield???

Hurt his foot slightly on Thursday, but practiced fully yesterday. He's scheduled to be back after the bye due to being placed on the IR-Designated to Return list. He'll be back for Tampa.

As for Thomas, here's hoping he can take advantage of this opportunity to make an impact and stick onto the team this time. Him, Davis and Robinson look like a trio with some potential. Though, I still would like to bring in a guy or two next year, or possibly bring back either Clark or Merriweather (not both).

Of course, including Thomas in that 'potential' group could be more than slightly premature. Guy hasn't really seen the field.

I could be wrong, but I THINK 4:00PM today was the last time to promote a player from "IR designated to Return" or PUP onto the active roster. After today, they must be out for the remainder of the season.

So, it looks like we won't be seeing Hanktime or Cofield this season.

The rules say they need to be either released, or moved to season ending IR.

I don't believe that's true, though I can't find what I would consider a reputable resource to back my thinking up. Here's what I believe is happening/will happen:

Hankerson was on season-beginning PUP, along with Bowen. That means that for the first six weeks of the season, neither player could practice or play. At the end of the six weeks, both players are allowed to practice with the team for up to three weeks. If not activated at the end of that third week, that player goes on season-ending IR. Bowen has already been activated, but Hankerson has yet to be. I believe that 4:00 PM Tuesday deadline is for THIS week, and it's for Hankerson as it'll be the end of those three weeks. I'm guessing he gets activated, and either Moss or A. Robinson get cut.

As for Colfield, he was placed on IR-Designated to Return. When placed onto that list, the player can't play for 10 weeks (not sure on what the restrictions are for practice). At the end of those 10 weeks, the player is either activated or placed on season-ending IR. Colfield's on track to return, and he will be there for the Tampa game. No idea if anyone would need to be cut when that happens.

One difference between the two is that any players placed on season-beginning PUP cannot have practiced with the team during camp. Players placed on IR-Designated to Return do not have this restriction. (I guaran-damn-tee you this option would've been used for the Comb if it had been available back in the late aughts.) Of course, the other differences are the length of time out, and that multiple players can be placed on season-beginning PUP while only one player can be named IR-Designated to Return.

Hopefully this is mostly correct, but to anyone reading, please feel free to back this up or refute anything incorrect with some actual resources. I came up empty in my (many) searches. Heh

Fantastic news.  Thomas playing like he has the talent for, and shown in glimpses, will help out Ryan.  Looking forward to seeing him get some play time to work his way into the team.

We have some young talent in our DBs.  Who would have thunk it :P

Looks like we need more than roster moves. We need a new defensive coordinator. Granted, he usually has a good scheme against Dallas, but can't contain the weaker offenses in the league. I hate that stupid zone coverage that Haslett is in love with.

Next year, I hope we go out and hire ex-redskin Todd Bowles as our DC.
