i made it half way to work this morning on my bike before the rain started

half way.

i literally had to pour out the water from my shoes and all of the zipped pockets of my backpack when i got to work.

and OF COURSE this was the weekend that i had finally really really REALLY washed my bike.   :(   the smooth quiet ride from all that loving care lasted all of 25 minutes

this was my bike, by the time i got to work:

Doing a sprint triathlon in a couple weeks.  So I bought a used road bike, a Canondale system six, their first release.  It's scary as **** and fun all at once.  Haven't been on a bike in forever but I've ridden it the past few days and it's been great.  The course is a 12 mile flat road so there are no climbs but also no real places to build up speed and coast.  That said, the bike seems to hold its speed pretty well.

@Spaceman Spiff If you haven’t already, I recommend cycling shorts.  Your bum will thank you for it. Good luck!

Noted.

It's weird.  All my life I grew up in Northern VA, hating cyclists.  I wasn't a dick to them or anything, I always gave plenty of space and certainly made sure they were safe but I was cussing under my breath the entire time.

First time out road riding I'm like HEY MAN CYCLISTS HAVE RIGHTS TOO SHARE THE ROAD!!!!

That goes with bike shorts, too.  I suppose I'll have to swallow some pride.

I’ve been cycling for years, had always said I would avoid cycling specific gear and made fun of the spandex wearing fools. Until that one day my LBS had a going out of business sale, and I purchased shorts (price was right). After my first ride wearing them, my first thought was, I can’t believe I waited so long to wear these. Comfort is everything, and for the past 5 years, I’m the spandex wearing fool now!

Yeah, it's understandable.  I mean there's a reason that everyone wears them, for sure.

i have two pair of biking shorts.. and rarely wear them.    BUT...it is probably because mine are cheap crap...

i don;t think the padding does much, but they ARE helpful to reduce thigh chafe.   But that shouldn't be a problem for a 12 mile flat ride.

Is anyone riding in the DC Bike Ride?  Looks like fun, just getting back into riding and what better place to start then downtown DC.

Sorry I saw this so late, but DO sign up next year.  It is a great ride.  For that one Saturday, the streets and highways of DC are all yours. And there's a decent party on the Mall at the end.

Rode Sunday from NOMA to Nats Park, then along the waterfront past the Kennedy Center, up Rock Creek, where Beach Drive just reopened, then back to NOMA for a beer and the first quarter only of the 'Skins, then on to Nats Park for the regular season finale and "Puffy Vest Day."

A woman jogged through a swarm of flies. A month later, she pulled a parasitic worm from her eye.

By
November 7, 2019 at 7:14 a.m. EST

The woman had just rounded a corner while running along a steep trail in coastal California in February 2018 when she charged face-first into an unpleasant surprise: a swarm of flies. The pesky bugs quickly engulfed her, forcing her to swat them away from her face and even spit some out of her mouth. But little did she know, things were about to get much worse.

A month later, her right eye started to bother her. She rinsed it with water and out came the source of the irritation — only it wasn’t an errant eyelash or a wayward dust particle.

It was a live worm, roughly half an inch long, transparent and wriggling.

well.. THAT just grossed the **** out of me.....

and I bike home either along the Potomac, or along Four-Mile Run... and WHENEVER i bike near dusk i bike through an orgy of about 700-gazillion horny swarming tiny little flies.

when i get home my  face and helmet basically look like :

if i pull worms out of my eyes... it is likely going to be with a rusty fork, and it ain;t going to be pretty.....

JUST IN: Va., Md. Reach Agreement for New American Legion Bridge

TysonsReporter.comToday at 10:00am
....   The new bridge will “relieve congestion at one of the country’s worst traffic chokepoints,” according to a press release, below. “The project is expected to cut commuting time in half for many travelers, reduce congestion in the regular lanes by 25 percent, provide 40 percent more lane capacity over the old bridge, and include bicycle and pedestrian paths across the Potomac River.”......

I am really jazzed that there will be bike lanes on the new Cabin John Bridge!

(assuming they also build some bike routes to GET to those lanes),

Motorist plows through bicyclists Saturday morning

Show Low Police reports a 35-year-old man driving a pickup ran over a group of 40 to 50 bicyclists on the Deuce of Clubs about 7:25 a.m. Saturday.

Show Low Police are investigating a collision between a motor vehicle and multiple bicyclists participating in the Bike the Bluff event. It happened in front of Horne Collision Center.

The crash was also followed by a shooting several blocks west of the crash site.

Show Low Police Sgt. Brandon Clark said the pickup was traveling eastbound in the fast lane when it veered across the street and struck the group of bicyclists who were traveling westbound.

“For whatever reason, he crossed over the lines. There was a group of riders that we are guessing were about 40 to 50 that were heading westbound in the number two, or the curb lane. They were involved in the Bike the Bluffs. He ended up striking several of the riders in that group,” Clark said.

The pickup then struck an APS power pole, breaking it and fled the scene.

Clark said he is unsure if any of the cyclists died but said eight to 10 were taken to Summit Healthcare and at least one was airlifted to a Phoenix trauma center.

Show Low Police released a written press release shortly before 11 a.m. stating that six people were take to Summit Healthcare Center. All six were in critical condition but two were stable. Two or three other victims walked into the hospital for treatment, according to police.

One victim was airlifted by helicopter from the scene according to Show Low Police.

"I do not know how many were transported," Clark said at the scene Saturday morning. "Whoever the suspect is, I do know he was taken to the hospital for whatever possible injuries he has. I don't know what happened over there."

The suspect is listed in critical but stable condition, according to police.

From that article:

The new bridge will be build on largely the same footprint as the existing bridge, but with two new express lanes in both directions. The initial stages of construction could begin as early as 2021.

Will this happen in our lifetime?  Or at least before I move out of the area post retirement and kids leaving the nest?

Fortunately, I'm no longer crossing the American Legion Bridge on a daily basis.

When they eventually get around to it will they include a span to support a rail line?

Philly Naked Bike Ride 2021: clothes off, masks on (PHOTOS)

Hundreds of naked — or partially clothed — people paraded through the streets of Philadelphia for the Philly Naked Bike Ride Saturday evening. But this year due to COVID-19, many people donned masks as they rode their bikes, skateboards, or rollerblades around the City of Brotherly Love.

With last year’s event canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, event organizers were ready to adapt to any potential hiccups in order to host the ride this year. When Philadelphia announced a new mask mandate in mid-August, they adjusted quickly to the news and announced that masks would be required for the safety of volunteers and participants.

“If you haven’t already heard... Philly is masking up, and so are we!” PNBR organizers posted on their Facebook page.

i was a bit leery... but it was a blast :).

the creepers ** that congregated at the staging point weirded out some people, but as soon as we got rolling it was big smiles and woots from all

(** creepers that were just there to leer and/or take pictures... as opposed participating creepers, having your bike was like willy wonka's golden ticket :).   ...creepers along the route were fine too )
