Terps Make the Cut for Blue-Chip In-State Running Back

 

 

It comes as no surprise, but Maryland made DeMatha running back Anthony McFarland's top 10 list, which he posted today on Twitter.

 

The contenders for McFarland, the nation's No. 4 all-purpose back and No. 54 prospect overall: Maryland, Ohio State, Alabama, Miami, South Carolina, Tennessee, Florida, Michigan, Texas A&M and Notre Dame. In the 247Sports Crystal Ball,

 

Maryland has 36 percent of  selections for the 5-foot-8, 186 pound rising senior, one of the nation's most sought-after running backs. Considered a major longshot during Randy Edsall's tenure, McFarland has taken a liking to the the Terps' first-year staff.

 

Maryland's top competition appears to be Alabama and Miami -- Hurricanes coach Mark Richt developed a relationship with McFarland while recruiting him to Georgia -- but the he was a regular in College Park this spring.

 

"The coaching changes were good coaching changes. There’s a lot of energy there. Maryland is definitely big in my recruitment,” McFarland told IMS in April.

 

McFarland is the second-ranked player in Maryland, behind teammate Chase Young, a defensive end Maryland's also prioritizing. The Terps' 10-man class is ranked No. 23 national in the 247Sports Composite.

DJ Durkin is tapping into the book of Meyer and Harbaugh at Maryland. Literally.

 

 

A few weeks into his first coaching gig — as a graduate assistant for a first-year head coach at a Mid-American Conference school — DJ Durkin decided he wanted to remember everything.

 

His boss radiated charisma and relentlessness, and success seemed inevitable to Durkin, then just 23. It felt like there were valuable lessons flying around the facility. He didn’t want to forget them.

 

“And so I started just taking notes,” Maryland’s new football coach recently explained. “I was kind of like ‘Man, there’s some good stuff going on here. I need to have a record of this.’ You’re trying to keep your head above the water, not get your [rear end] ripped every day.

 

But it was like, ‘This is good stuff.’ You just knew it was.”

 

Durkin never discussed the spiral notebook he began keeping with that head coach, a guy named Urban Meyer. He didn’t discuss it with his fellow assistants either. As Durkin flew through the coaching ranks — from Bowling Green to Notre Dame back to Bowling Green, and then to Stanford and Florida and Michigan — his original notebook became two, and then four, and then 10.

Diamond "Dopey" Stone made a mistake.  I knew he wasn't ready, but I didn't know he has a lot of baggage which is scaring teams.  He played soft for us all year and wasn't reliable.  One more year and his draft stock could have been a lot more solid.  Maybe a good lesson for some future MD players.

I heard on the radio he has 4 significant items in his past a team asked him about.  Dopey was honest about them and admitted they were all true.  The team appreciated his honesty but the 4 things were so egregious that the team seemed scared to take a chance.

 

I was excited to get him as a Terp, but he definitely played with little energy a lot of the time and looked as if he didn't work hard and had just been the best player on the court his entire life.  When going against stiffer competition, he was butter soft.

 

I couldn't believe it today when the guy said he might drop out of the first round.  I kept hearing his potential would guarantee him a top 15 slot.

Carter is a joke. No one knows what he was thinking. Most people thought Stone should go because of his size and skill. Apparently, it's the other attributes that make a great player that he doesn't quite have. I'll be curious to see if he is motivated or if he is just defeated that he blew it.

Decorated Grad Transfer WR Commits to Maryland

 

Decorated senior wide receiver Teldrick Morgan is heading home.

 

 

The former Meade (Md.) High School star announced his plans on Monday to transfer to Maryland for his senior year. He'll be eligible immediately after graduating from New Mexico State in May with a degree in criminal justice and should challenge for a starting position alongside projected starters D.J. Moore and Levern Jacobs.

 

Following a campus visit a few weeks ago, a source told IMS that Maryland's staff expected him to become a Terp. He comes to College Park after leading the Aggies in receiving for two straight years. As a redshirt sophomore, the speedy 6-foot, 195 pound receiver was named second-team all-Sun Belt after hauling in 75 catches for 905 yards and seven touchdowns. Morgan's production dropped last year, mainly due to injuries which forced him to miss three games and not start another, but he still managed 45 catches for 551 yards. He finished his junior season strong with 18 catches for 182 yards in his final two games. Morgan also has experience returning kicks and punts.

 

The Terps return six of seven wide receivers to catch a pass last year, including Jacobs and Moore, who led the team with 35 catches for 425 yards and 25 catches for 357 yards respectively. Morgan should compete with Jacobs' younger brother, Taivon (21 catches, 264 yards), and Malcolm Culmer (15 catches, 221 yards) for the receiver spot opposite of Moore. Incoming freshman Tino Ellis should also be in the mix on the outside. The lone notable casualty of last year's receiving corps is Amba Etta-Tawo, who, like Morgan, took advantage of the graduate transfer rule and will finish up his career at Syracuse.

Carter is a joke. No one knows what he was thinking. Most people thought Stone should go because of his size and skill. Apparently, it's the other attributes that make a great player that he doesn't quite have. I'll be curious to see if he is motivated or if he is just defeated that he blew it.

if Carter stays another year, it would not improve his draft stock. He is a 6'8" PF with no bounce and no perimeter skill. He was not going to show that at UMD.

 

Going pro, he at least has a chance to earn money somewhere. Earning money>>>>playing for free.

 

What is a joke is your attempt to hide your contempt with Carter leaving early to his draft position when its really about you wanting to see a better bball team next season.

Jackson originally signed with Florida as a member of the class of 2014, but was charged with armed robbery and dismissed from the team after his redshirt freshman season. His case went to trial where he was found not guilty, but the damage to his Florida career had already been done. He couldn't return to the Gators, and spent a year at Riverside Community College. He appeared to be headed to join his former head coach Will Muschamp at South Carolina before "a ruling beyond South Carolina's control" prevented him from joining the team, according to Shurburtt. Now he might be joining DJ Durkin, who was Jackson's defensive coordinator for the Gators.

Four-Star Announcing Commitment On Wednesday
 

 

According to SENTelevision, four-star Potomac (Md.) defensive back Deon Jones will make his commitment on Wednesday. A top priority for defensive backs coach Aazaar Abdul-Rahim, Jones has been vocal about his interest in Maryland, and the Terps are believed to be the heavy favorite.

 

Florida, Florida State, Clemson and Penn State are other contenders in his recruitment. Clemson, his previous leader, has had Jones' attention since his freshman year. 

 

Jones is the fourth-best prospect in Maryland and the 13th-best defensive back in the country. Jones is a composite four-star and is rated a 92 in the 247 database. Clemson currently holds the crystal ball lead, but Maryland has received the last three picks. The Terps are in need of help in the secondary, and they've prioritized two local defensive backs -- Jones and Riverdale Baptist's Tariq Castro-Fields -- for some time.

Juan Dixon’s time as a Maryland basketball staffer has come to an end.

The player widely regarded as one of the best in Terrapins basketball history is gone from the program. The Washington Post’s Roman Stubbs and Baltimore Sun’s Don Markus were the first to report Wednesday that Maryland had “relieved him of his duties.”

 

There’s still a good bit unknown about this, but one major element came down to NCAA regulations. A source said Dixon’s split with Maryland stemmed, in the first place, from his desire to be a full-time, recruiting-eligible assistant. At Maryland, Dixon could neither lead workouts nor leave the building to recruit.

Teams only get three assistants who can do those things, and Maryland’s sheet is full with Dustin Clark, Bino Ranson and Cliff Warren. Dixon will look for a similar job at another school, the source said, although the timetable on that isn’t clear.

 

Sad to see him go. Wish him all the best wherever he lands.  He was a complete class act and loved how hard he played for the Terps.

Dixon was such a great player at Maryland. I loved his story and how he overcame so much and worked so hard to be great. I was so surprised he didn't do better professionally. As for this, it sounds like he wants more of an opportunity to be a coach and he is limited now. I hope he finds somewhere he can do what he wants to do.
