Redskins Plan to Sign QB Hasselbeck

By Mark Maske

Washington Post Staff Writer

The Washington Redskins planned to sign quarterback Tim Hasselbeck today and were contemplating releasing veteran quarterback Rob Johnson.

Hasselbeck was at Redskins Park today for a workout. He was released by Philadelphia on Aug. 31 after spending last season with the Eagles. Hasselbeck, 25, entered the NFL in 2001 as an undrafted rookie out of Boston College signed by the Buffalo Bills. He is the son of former NFL tight end Don Hasselbeck and the brother of Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck.

The Redskins were giving serious consideration to releasing Johnson, 30, later today. The club signed him in March to a two-year, $2.005 million contract (including a $250,000 signing bonus) to back up starter Patrick Ramsey, then opted to go with only those two quarterbacks on its 53-man roster, with rookie Gibran Hamdan on the five-member practice squad.

Johnson appeared in each of the Redskins' past two games and completed five of seven passes in mop-up duty but was sacked three times. The former Bills starter also has had stints with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tampa Bay Buccaneers during his nine-year NFL career, and was pursued by the Dallas Cowboys in the off season before picking the Redskins. He never seemed fully comfortable with Coach Steve Spurrier's offensive system, however.

He would be the third player released by the Redskins this week, following defensive end Ladairis Jackson and offensive lineman Brad Bedell. Spurrier promised changes after Sunday's 24-7 loss at Buffalo, which left with the Redskins with three straight losses and a record of 3-4.

If Ramsey goes down we are screwed anyway unless DW is on the roster. He proved last year he is competant enough to run the offense. But the defense would have to be playing really well.

Hassellbeck may be fine a few weeks down the road, but for this year, Ramsey or DW is the only chance at decency.

I dunno... as much as I hate Rob "Meat Wagon" Johnson, Tim Hasselbeck is no Matt Hasselbeck.

Note the comparison. RJ has at least started games (including two last year for the SB Champs).

Of course, he did look HORRIBLE in all of his opportunities on the field. Doesn't look like he even knows the plays.

Not sure what this is going to solve mid-season. Maybe get rid of RJ, and bring in DW to coach this Hasselback kid – and be available to play if he’s needed.

I understand trying to improve, but change for the sake of change doesn’t make a whole lot of sense at this point.

This picture is not looking very pretty…

Redskins Sign Hasselbeck, Release R. Johnson

10/22/2003

The Redskins have signed quarterback Tim Hasselbeck to the team's 53-man roster. To make room for Hasselbeck, the team released backup QB Rob Johnson.

Hasselbeck, 6-1 and 211 pounds, is expected to serve as the backup to starter Patrick Ramsey.

He joins the Redskins after spending the 2003 offseason and training camp with the Philadelphia Eagles, completing 21-of-39 passes for 205 yards in pre-season play.

In 2002, Hasselbeck spent time with Philadelphia and the Carolina Panthers. He was initially released by the Eagles after he completed 23-of-32 passes for 200 yards and a touchdown in four pre-season games.

He signed with Carolina's practice squad and was later promoted to the active roster for a game against Tampa Bay. Carolina released him a few weeks later.

Hasselbeck resigned with the Eagles' practice squad in November 2002. A week later, he was promoted to the active roster after starter Donovan McNabb and backup Koy Detmer were sidelined by injuries. He made his NFL debut as a holder against St. Louis and was a backup to the Eagles' A.J. Feeley for several games late last season.

Hasselbeck is the son of former NFL tight end Don Hasselbeck and brother of Seattle Seahawks starting quarterback Matt Hasselbeck. The former Boston College star signed as a rookie free agent with Buffalo prior to the 2001 season but did not make the squad.

He finished his collegiate career ranked sixth in total passing yards (3,980), fifth in touchdowns (29) and seventh in both pass completions (278) and attempts (501). He earned MVP honors in Boston College's Aloha Bowl win over Arizona State.

Johnson had seen limited duty in his brief time with the Redskins. He played in the fourth quarter of the last two games against Tampa Bay and Buffalo, completing 5-of-7 passes for 39 yards. He was sacked three times.
