Some Love For Haslett

and that goal line stand...that was impressive. That was our season right there and they stepped up big time after some bad calls by the refs basically escorting SD to the end zone.

Not to take anything away from our defense, but the reality is if San Diego calls plays that make sense in that situation...we are probably not talking about a win right now.  If they run it again on 2nd or 3rd down, they probably go in.  The odds are good.  Instead, they wanted an ESPN highlight.

When you look at the situation objectively over the last two years, not emotionally, you begin to see that Haslett has been behind the 8 ball big time.

It used to be defenses win games, but whoever decided that, forgot that it is largely the offenses that score the points that are needed to win. The most porous of defenses, quickly give the ball back to their offense, who can tie it right back up.

It's all about offense now. Just look at the scores of our games in the past 2 years. No one ever labeled us an offensive juggernaut.

Sure, a defense will stifle a QB, rattle him early, or team on any given day, and win a game largely on their own. But if they fail, they always have their offense to bail them out. With the rule changes, protections of QB's, and nary an OL holding call at their arsenal, its never been easier. I think games with more scoring are more exciting. I just wish they were more liberal in deciding turnovers. I hate the late in-completion calls, was there a football move crap. Toss the defenses a bone.

Nick Foles 400+ yards 7 TD passes in 3 quarters. That scares me big time. The Philthy Iggles game is a must win. I hope Haz brings the pressure against the remaining QBs.

That's "Foles Gold".  I'm gonna chalk that up to something like a Matt Flynn throwing 6 TDs in a division game.  Foles looked like Blain Gabbert against the Cowboys.

T

I think you just add Keenan Robinson and Tanard Jackson to the defense and you have at least a top 10.

Keenan has never done anything and is coming back from a major injury and Tanard was really never great or a real FS, more of a SS. Id love to see us draft a high ILB and sign a high end FS, as well as some rebuild on that line.

I'm not talking about later, I'm talking about what could have been.  Keenan, Tanard, Rob Jackson, and Jarvis Jenkins in the line up for Week 1 and how much better is this defense statistically right now?

I'm not trying to let Haslett off the hook for everything...I'm just wondering has he done enough to warrant holding onto him for one more year without obstructions.  Are we asking the guy to turn water into wine?  Lately, they have been much improved.

I guess we have to see how the rest of the year plays out, but I think Haslett still has a good chance to save his job here.  I don't think it's a foregone conclusion he's gone after this season anymore.

I saw a big improvement in the secondary. Shouldn't we be giving credit to R. Morris instead?

No, they both deserve credit.  This isn't an either or situation.  Morris is preparing our corners pretty well, and Haslett is responding by drawing up a scheme where we have a ton of corners on the field.

Our base defense seems to be 1 safety and 4 corners.  Amerson and Hall are dedicated corners, and we move Biggers and Wilson around all over the place.

The Defense has improved but i don't think they were that bad to start with. The Skins lack of offense and horrid special teams play screwed the D game after game. Look at how many games they held, only to end up right back on the field after a 3 and out, a turn over on their side of the filed or one of Rocca's 20 yard punts.

As the other phases of the game "offense and ST" improve the D gets better, field position is key to any game and the Skins were on the wrong side of it due to lack of production or other mistakes. I like the change in scheme more man, I think it benefits the physical guys in the secondary, they seem to still loose people in zone but they are coming a long. The young guys are getting better, think they are on the right track, I think Haslett is doing well with the pieces he has and the situation his defense is put into, especially the first few weeks of the season.

Which is another great point.  The offense knee-capped them in the first couple of games at least.

I hope you are right about that. I feel the Redskins will have success against him if they can generate some kind of pass rush.

I guess going from historically bad to mediocre is a considerably upgrade. The defense did its job for like 3 quarters and a half...kinda inexcusable they got burned in the end like they did. Plus SD's bizarre play calling bailed us out on that goal line stand.

I got ya. I agree, this would be a much different unit I think. The first few games I don't know if anyone could have salvaged, with the way our offense was going. Im am so back and forth on Haz this season, who knows.

Alot of people seem to have short term memory loss on Haslett.

Lets not forget, this is the same DC who looked lost last year, which carried over to this year. At first, excuses were abundant,

but after awhile, as he was out-coached on a weekly basis, many of the Haslett apologists even turned on him, wanting his butt out ASAP.

This is the same DC as last year, who started out looking like junk, even with the discussion of quality of personnel on the field. So what gives now? This was San Diego, a fairly good tem, not a barn burner by any stretch, with Gates as their threat. When we play GB or Cin., even Chicago, who let a no-name back-up go ape**** against this very defense, and you want to give him love?

 Sorry, no.

Opponents Passing Yards: 28th Opponents Rushing Yards: 22nd per ESPN.

Just doesn't cut it for me. We need to move forward and find someone who can get the most talent out of what we have on defense and Haslett doesn't do that.

You made valid points with your whole post.  For me, like I said earlier, I'm just not sure if starting over is something we want to do at this point given all the other considerations.  Salary cap, suspensions, etc.

The last two seasons, Haslett has had to start the year with KEY personnel missing.  This is a fact that cannot be denied.  Not 3rd string players, but starters or heavy rotation guys.  Could we do better by bringing in a new coordinator?  Maybe...we could also do worse.  (See 2013 special teams play)

This reminds me of the "Fire Danny Smith" thread, and I won't sit here and say I didn't want him gone. I did.  I wanted him gone a lifetime ago...but when you take a leap of faith and bring in new coaches and personnel, the chances are there that you end up worse than you were.

it's hard to be objective about him.  The fan in me at times wants him thrown out before halftime.  I just don't know what to think anymore.  How much weight do other factors have in how he has performed?  When you look at everything in totality...has he really had a fair shake?

Still don't want him back next year (along with most all I the staff bar a dramatic , consistent turnaround the second half of the year), but credit where credits due; the difference in the first few weeks D to the D right now is night and day. Far from perfect. But 100% better than we started out.

Pretty much back to the unit from last seasons run in that isn't by any means stellar, but makes enough plays in getting the ball back to give the O a chance.

Hail.

Agreed.  I'm pleased with the improvement as I was last season, but he still has to fall.

We can't afford to be going on this track into the future.

Again, for me with the way the modern NFL works...I'm not sure replacing him is really that important, due to the state of the game in 2013.  I'm really not sure it's worth the hassle.

A marginal defense with an offense that can score at least 30 every week gives you an excellent chance to win every game.  Fundamentally, the game has changed.  Pass to set up the run.  Bend but don't break defense.

Hell, just holding teams to Field Goals...even just half of the time seems to be the measure of a good defense these days.  Used to be forcing 3 and outs and knocking people on their ass.

If you go into the half with a 21 to 17 lead these days.  Your defense probably played "well" in the first half.

Yes, but our defense has been broken many times this year. The offense has had it share of troubles but our defense isn't playing at a bend only level, to me anyway.

Sorry know it alls but you can't have it both ways. When we had a consistently top 10 D everyone complained that it wasn't aggressive enough.

Now we have a modern D by NFL standards (gives up a ton of yardage but holds at critical times while generating turnovers) and it's working.

There is no such thing as a great D at the moment. Look across the NFL, teams are giving up yards and points every week.

 I look at it this way;

the 2nd half of last season, all aspects of the team came together, we went on a great run, had one of those dramatic big time games at home against our biggest hated rival, slammed them to the ground and took the NFCeast title.

Fast-forward to this season; yea, a player or 2 has been out for whatever reasons, but a few additions were put in place, and the defense couldn't stop anyone for awhile. Granted the offense was non-existant, but the defense had no excuse whatsoever for the Eagles offense, as they marched up and down the field at will, building a big lead. Haslett is up in a booth with a lost look on his face.

Following week, GB lit up the defense, as did Stafford, Chicago, with a back-up QB, Denver,  yada yada yada.

This is the same defense that was on pace [ maybe still ] on its way to having the most points/yards scored on them in league history.

This does not in any way reflect the defense from last year, if anything they possibly could have even been a little better, if not at least about the same; instead, they were torched, on a weekly basis. Embarrassed. Humiliated.

So Haslett, or Morris, whichever may be the case, FINALLY decided to play more press coverage, which everyone has been begging for, and low-and-behold, IT WORKED!  Truth is, they are still predictable, and still have issues with adjustments, and this falls on gameplanning, which falls directly in the lap of Haslett.
