KingGibbs
Hannah Montana who? As much as her twerking (did I just say that?) at the VMA's repulsed me I have to give credit where credit Is due. She wanted to shake the innocent image of Hannah Montana and she's done that ten fold. She has completely re-invented herself (albeit slutty) but she and her team knows what sells and selling she is/will. Dare I say I actually LIKE her new song "Wrecking Ball"? Yeah, I'm comfortable in my skin and manhood. Check out the video that has received over 200 MILLION views! http://youtu.be/My2FRPA3Gf8
JamesMadisonSkins
The whole album is actually pretty damn good. I'll say this ... I'm digging Cyrus' new stuff ... but I think Lorde is another good one and she's (16 years old) not selling sex but the art of her lyrics. Both are atop the charts and both are incredibly talented. TheGoodBits
Damn it, we'd made it this far on this forum with no Miley Cyrus thread. I was cautiously optimist there would never be one. Oh well.
CrypticVillain
So I should applaud a PR team because they made their subject do lewd things to stay relevant. Okay. I wished we lived in world where your talents alone could help you get to the top and stay there, but sex sells. And unfortunately for women, if you want to be taken serious, you need to take it off lol...

I think it has more to do with her being herself and not having to conform to Mickey Mouse anymore. Has nothing to do with selling sex because she was making millions when she was being a Disney drone Same with Beiber. They're being normal 18-23 year olds...except they are super famous. So this stuff is normal for 18-23 year olds? That right there is a problem in itself. But let her do her thing, then in a couple of years when she has a break down like Spears, Lohan, etc., we can just throw her to the side and move on to the next one. It doesn't matter if it's normal/appropriate/whatever or not. She's being herself and I'll never discredit someone for that...even if I found her VMA performance really stupid. Her music has gotten better overall though. And we have no real proof that she uses hard drugs other than maybe weed and molly (like the ppl you used as an example) so I don't see her self-destructing like them. I don't think having edgy videos and lyrics and shaking your non-exisent ass will lead to a breakdown. Rihanna has been going strong seemingly and she's wayyyyy more raunchy than Miley. More often then not it is hard for actors to shake their childhood persona and they can't handle from going to stardom to irrelevant. Some of them have even committed suicide. It is easy to see that she wanted to rid herself of the Hannah Montana image and she wasn't going to do that without taking drastic measures in regards to her image. She's done that even if we don't agree with the approach she's taken. Outside of the sexual content she can sing pretty well and that is more surprising to me more than anything other then I actually find her sexually appealing on a wrecking ball. BRAVEONTHEWARPATH93
Even when she was Hannah Montana, she was smoking, dressing the way she wanted, etc. Let her do her.

RVAbrendan
She also put out a statement a few weeks back saying something to the degree of "people are so up in arms over my VMA performance, but it's ridiculous. You see murder, rape, and sex all over the media...not to mention there are atrocities happening all over the world...and I'm getting crucified for dancing?" Have to admit, she has a point! All I am saying is that it was a classless way to get there. But that's on them. And I know how talented she is, that is why I am disappointed she's doing all this stuff to get attention. But like i said, sex sells. People gobble that stuff up like Thanksgiving leftovers..
GibbsFactor
She was a Disney superstar in Hannah Montana. She's done with that part of her life. No longer a teen bopper. She wanted the world to know she is a sexual being now. Mission accomplished. Now, tone it back 10 notches, mmmk?
The Evil Genius
I do think it's interesting that kid pop stars cannot branch out and do edgy stuff when they become adults without taking flack while famous child actors are largely given a pass when they do more adult roles when they become adults (like a Daniel Radcliffe or Natalie Portman). Henry
Eh. She's talented and her songs are fine. It's just sad that she decided to make herself a cliche. "I was a nice Disney girl but now I'm all slutty" isn't exactly a re-invention. It's well tread territory. That won't change the fact that she's a decent singer, but more sad than impressive. spjunkies
I have to admit that I've ignored everything she's done in her career. That Fallon clip is my first real exposure to her and I have to admit that girl can SING!!!
Henry
Heh. I have a 12 year-old daughter. I know everything there is to know about Miley Cyrus. I remember a little while back my girl was watching Hannah Montana re-runs on Netflix and she goes "Dad, do you think Miley is really like that in real life?" And I said "Maybe, but she's going to lose her mind soon." My daughter asked me what I meant by that and I said "You'll see." A few weeks later Miley was all over the news twerking her little rear off. My daughter now thinks I'm some kind of genius. She still watches the re-runs though. skinsmarydu
I can't remember which awards show, about the time her first album came out...but both she & Taylor Swift performed. Can't remember what song Taylor did, but I remember Miley doing (I think it's called) "Mountain"...and she sooooo blew Taylor away. My switch flipped right then on who was more talented. HogNose
She has a good PR team but any kid can be turned into a Miley Cyrus, Brittany Spears, or Justin Bieber. Manufactured pop stars are churned out easily these day with some auto tune thrown in for good measure. More power to them though if they find an audience. Swift is a songwriter. Cyrus is a singer. Cyrus had better be a better singer because that's what she does.
