skinfan2k
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=clayton_john&id=1840261 This rule was introduced in 2004 was a result of the Patriots mugging the Colts Receivers in the AFC championships. With the NFL preaching safety and now defenses not able to dictate the flow of games. Is it time to remove this rule? WRs now can run freely without worrying about any contact and can run the middle without getting smacked. Bringing this rule will allow corners to play physical yet keeping the safe aspect of the game. Personally, i don't want to see high scoring games where defenses don't play any role in deciding the game.
Darth Tater
The rule was introduced in 1978. Soon offenses were taking such big advantage of it, refs began to not enforce it again until the mid 90s (remember how we went from one of the best secondaries despite no pass rush to a bad one overnight). Enforcement began to fade until 2004.
skinfan2k
I guess i didn't clarify but we need to give power back to the corners so they can start mugging and not just in the first 5 yards. Right now, corners can only play bump and run for the first 5 yards
Destino
They need to change the defenseless receiver garbage and all hit to the head penalties. There are entirely too many flags caused by offensive players ducking. Every time they see a defender coming they lower their heads like charging bulls and if their precious little noggins get hit defenders get fined. Unless the defender leads with the crown of his helmet or hits an upright player in the head there should be no penalties for defenseless receivers or anything of the sort. It's getting ridiculous and it puts the defenders are far too big of a disadvantage. The contact rule doesn't really bother me but it shouldn't allow wide outs to go through defenders either. If the offensive player initiates contact than it should be no call.
Warhead36
No it's fine. There is still room for good corner play. See the Seahawk CBs, Revis, JoJo in Houston, Tillman, etc...
HeluCopter29
Honestly, I've always been one to call BS on most types of DBack penalties. I totally understand if your grabbing the guy before he has a chance to catch it but way to many times it's called for ticky tack reasons. Contact should be allowed. It's on the receivers to get open.
Hazel-Ra
I understand Goodell wanting to fight off litigation for all the head injury issues, but sometimes I think he truly wants to see combined scores hit the 70s-80s on a regular basis.
