Our Defense Is Built To Stop Elite (Broncos) Offenses

Yes, in theory.  Of course, in theory our offense is supposed to get of the snide, control the ball and keep the pressure on the other guys OC.  In theory, we are supposed to force the opponent into trying to create the big play (for instance, you got to throw a deep pass if you want to get 20 or more yards on one play) because we actually are supposed to be able to tackle.

We're 4 weeks in, so 25% of the quarterbacks we've faced have been Matt Flynn. It's WAY too early to be calling our defense elite at anything.

It is fair to say we may be elite in pass rush. Is it 100% confirmed? Not yet.

It's also been proven that elite pass rushing defenses have a better chance in stopping elite offenses than non-elite pass rushing defenses.

It's not drinking Kool aid it's being realistic. During our win streak last season our defense played admirably. We shut down the Giants in both games.

There's no reason to believe our defense can't pick it up again after the bye week.

Broncos haven't been held under 37 points all season.  You are not being realisitc saying we can go in THEIR stadium on primetime television and shut them down.  Homer to homer, if the secondary picks up like the oakland game or the 7 game win streak last year, we can beat them; but will need the offense to score points because they are going to get there's.  This is basically the same team as last year, but they need to prove they can do it more then once this year.

And for the record, sweeping the non-playoff bound 2012 Giants is not the same as beating the 2013 Broncos in Denver.  Bad example...

Manning gets the ball out quickly. Like 90% of the time it's in 2 seconds or LESS.

I think we've seen what happens against our defense in 3 of the first 4 games when this is the case.

That's a good point. The thing I fear is that Manning already knows how to beat pass rushes and will throw short passes early to bait us into the deep passes.

It will have to be great game planning. Hasslet can regain confidence if he can somehow utilize our pass rush without letting Manning burn us deep.

Seriously. Manning is possibly the greatest QB ever to play the game, in large part due to him being able to diagnose defenses and exploit their weaknesses. Redskins have weaknesses. He's going to tear us to pieces.

We may not be elite in turnovers(we are still top 10), we are elite in pass rush.

Not top 10.

Only tied with Carolina for 10th in the NFC - out of a total of 16 teams - not the league as a whole.

There are 17 other teams, league wide, with greater turnover numbers. At the time of this list, we were tied with three other clubs at 6 turnovers. That makes us somewhere between #18 to #21, out of 32.

Perspective.

Half of our sacks came against Oakland too. Really can't base much on how we did against Oakland's backups. Before that we were on a good pace, but that Oakland game really has people overestimating what our defense is capable of.

Same System for 3-4 years, one that is predicated on applying pressure, which they have been doing this far.

Yeah. Sadly we can't play Matt Flynn and a patched up line every week.

But this debate about our perceived pressure, or lack there of, has gone on all week in other threads so no need to rehash it again here.

Hail.

Agree, but this thread is more about how our D can contend with elite offenses based on our philosophy.

The best way for our defense to beat anyone is by trying to pressure the QB.  Even if it doesn't result in sacks, it results in offenses actually having to account for us doing more than reading.

Haslet has to move up his corners tight.  Even the best pass rush can be stopped with a quick drop. In the end, the corners have to cover.

That is where he has to "risk it" to have a chance of winning any given week. Its not just Peyton, its how we have to play all competent QBs. And to me, its not a risk. Its football. Too much zone is a recipe to lose.

This defense is built to beat the Matt Flynn's of the NFL.

In all seriousness to slow the Broncos down you need a physical secondary that can limit YAC.  The Redskins can't tackle.  The Chiefs D will be interesting to watch against the Broncos.
