Our Defense Is Built To Stop Elite (Broncos) Offenses

More so than other defenses....

Willie Mcginest brought up an interesting point on Nfl Network. The reason Manning is having success is because he is throwing from a clean pocket 90% of the time.

Willie brought up how his Patriots were able to stop Manning and make him look average by putting pressure on him.

Our defense is built to stop Qb's like Manning(non-mobile). We have an elite defense in terms of turnovers, TDs, and sacks.

I'd say part of the reason we have struggled is the mobile Qbs we have faced(Vick and Rodgers).

I'm not saying we will in fact be able to stop them, but I think this is the type of defense we have built; one that relies on pressure rather than being stout.

Edit: Our defensive performances have been great recently. We did in fact stop the Broncos offense (relatively).

A lil early to be opening up the kool-aid tap again, ain't it? No one's defense is built to "stop" the Broncos offense. Our defense can hit him to try and throw off his rythem, no doubt, but it will be up to the seconday to keep him getting to his quick hits before the pressure gets to him.

In all honesty, this may be one of those games we're going to need Griffin to go sportscenter in order to pull it off, because the Broncos are going to get at least 21 points in Denver. It's not about us being bad, its about giving them the respect that they're that damn good...

It's not drinking Kool aid it's being realistic. During our win streak last season our defense played admirably. We shut down the Giants in both games.

There's no reason to believe our defense can't pick it up again after the bye week.

Lol, it's realistic that our defense is built to stop an offense that is on pace to obliterate the scoring record?

There's plenty of reason to believe our defense won't pick it up. For one, Haslett won't bench who he needs to bench. Make Orakpo a pass rush specialist and have Jackson play 1st and 2nd down, and put Barnett in there over Fletcher. Won't happen because they are two of our big names, but they've both missed a ton of plays that needed to be made.

The Skins defense under Gregg Williams in 2007 wasn't bad, but when we went up to New England that season, Brady and his backups hung 52 on us (ok, one of their TDs was a defensive one). The Broncos might have the best offense since that 2007 Patriots team.

That same record breaking offense of the 2007 Patriots was stopped by the Giants, who had a devastating pass rush.

This Goes further in proving that a dynamic offense can be stopped by a prolific pass rush.

The 2007 Patriots offense broke plenty of records. They couldn't do a thing vs the Giants defense that year.

Both Manning and Brady have been proven to play poorly when they are being hurried/sacked.

Why is it inconceivable to think our defense can't put pressure on Manning? Both Orakpo and Kerrigan are pro bowl players. We are also getting Jenkins back and Rob Jackson back, which will only improve our pass rush.

The defense that is on pace to be one of the worst in history is built ideally to stop the QB that is on pace to have the best year ever? No.

The redskins defense is nothing like the monster unit the giants unleashed in the post seasons during their recent superbowl runs.

Pace doesn't mean a thing. We had two poor games against great offenses this season that skew our stats.

Our two poor games were also against mobile qbs. We played much better against the Lions and Raiders.

There are also other factors affecting our defense. Time of possession is largely in favor of our opponents.

Monster Unit? Do a little research.

Week 1 against the Cowboys they gave up 45 points and nearly 500 yards.

Then week 2 they gave up 35 and 400 yards.

They even gave up 24 points to us in week 3, which was their first win of the season.

They were also on pace to be a terrible unit. Let me emphasize it's only week 5

Hopefully this defense will come out of the Bye week with a renewed energy and sense of urgency, better able to tackle consistently and with a solid and aggressive pass rush able to get to and if not sack, hit them enough to get inside their heads and make them inconsistent. That is the only chance we have of beating anyone much less the Broncos.

In the postseason. Did you miss that part? In the 8 postseason games they played in 2007 and 2011 no team scored 21 points on them. Only two teams managed to score more than 17. I'd say that's pretty damn good.

To compare them in the postseason and us after 4 games is unfair. Teams DO improve throughout the season. Ravens fans actually hated Flacco middle of last season.

The first basic premise of this thread: Teams with an elite pass rush have a far better chance of stopping Elite offenses. This has been proven throughout history.

The second basic premise: The Redskins have an elite pass rush. They are top 5 in sacks, and are getting back 2 starting caliber players in the front 7. It's not inconceivable to believe we have an elite pass rush.

You are comparing what the giants did in the Super Bowl to what the redskins are going to be facing in the regular season. I'm doing the same.

This is the part I take umbrage with.

Here are the league stats on turnovers:

mf04.png

^ Of our 6 turnovers - 4 were fumbles lost by the opponent, 2 were INTs.

More importantly, of the 6 turnovers - 3 occurred against Oakland (1 INT, 2 fumbles), in other words ... HALF of our accumulated turnover stats against one opponent - the Raiders.

The INTs:

1. a Stafford misfire on a quick slant, miscommunication with WR, thrown right at Hall.

2. a poor throw by Flynn picked by Amerson who jumped a short drag route.

Best believe Manning 'aint Flynn. Manning has zero INTs so far this season.

We are not "elite"
