How In The Hell Did Va Dems Nominate Mcauliffe For Governor?

The guy was terrible in the debate last night and is basically a frat boy selling his charm to a sorority girl

Meanwhile you have a complete nutjob in Cuccinelli, but he also comes off prepared, with a plan and experience. You can tell at minimum the guy is very competent and would be an effective administrator, but again, is a complete insane nutjob from the worst of VA Republicans.

This should be a slam dunk for VA Dems, but you can't help but think McAuliffe treats this as one big joke and just something to add to his resume

I don't want to see a nutjob like Cucinelli in charge of the dog park, but I certainly don't want someone so unprepared like McAuliffe that he thinks taking Republicans out for beers will help fix some serious issues in VA

The reasoning behind the NVTC TechPAC’s nod — Cuccinelli had detailed responses to questions in candidate interviews, three board members said, while McAuliffe was uninformed and superficial — bolsters the view that the Democrat’s breezy style doesn’t sit well with some Virginians. Two of the people said they were leaning toward Cuccinelli before the interviews; one disliked both candidates.

The McAuliffe camp’s effort to reverse the endorsement was seen by some as an overreaction that will only draw attention to a development that is of limited interest to the average voter. Several people with knowledge of the proceedings said they were shocked at his mishandling of the endorsement process itself — and his misread of the serious and thoughtful approach to the issues that the council was expecting to hear from both candidates.

McAuliffe is an asshole, a party hack, about as attractive as that other party leader asshole Rince Preibus,

But Cucinelli really reinforces the Republican party image of hating women and science. And he's a complete douchebag too.

And in the classic spirit of small government Republicans, Cucinelli spent taxpayer dollars on a politically motivated academic witch-hunt ... suing a UVa academic on their research because it involved climate change?

Same reason you have dimwits in the house talking about shutting down the government: the primary process is broken in the sense of getting respectable candidates in a reasonable position to make it in the present day. All the moderates who don't have friends with bottomless pockets are getting filtered out and we're getting left with a bunch of Cucinelli's and Mcauliffe's...

The Citizen's United ruling is destroying this country one election at a time

Robert Sarvis, the Libertarian candidate is polling as high as 10%.  Of course, he was excluded from the debate.  He seems like a decent, well-rounded guy and is probably worth at least a protest vote, given the miserable nature of the major party candidates.

And yeah, I've met Cooch...not good.

Yeah, I've been looking into Sarvis myself and he's definitely leading for me. Definitely some things I disagree with, but overall he seems more on point.

He doesn't scare the **** out of me like Cuch does, obviously isn't insane, but I disagree with too much of the platform to consider voting for him. Governor is so much different than President because there isn't the foreign policy/military/nation and world changing policy stuff at stake. For President I vote for the person running. Governor, more of a vote for the platform. So McAuliffe will get my vote regardless of how "meh" he is of a candidate.

Living in Richmond city, I'm surprised I haven't seen more pro-McAuliffe campaigning. It's all muckraking by Cooch. The dems seemingly aren't even showing up in this race.

I'd have to think its just a matter of budget. Thank god it's not a 6 month long period of being subjected to political ads like the Presidential campaign. Once we get into October I think you'll see more from McAuliffe.

I don't live in VA (so I haven't been following this election).

Can someone just give me a few FACTS as to why it seems so many of you think Cuchinelli is "from the Worst of VA Repubs" and a "douchebag"?

Not arguing, just wondering.

Thanks.

Well, he's filing lawsuits to keep oral sex between two consenting, even married adults, illegal.  So, he's the anti-BJ vote.  To me, if you hate BJ's, you are a douche bag.

He's scared women to death with his views, and he's also linked to the gift thing in VA.

Thank goodness I get to vote in VA one more time, and will vote Democrat.  I will never vote for a Republican platform as I think their policies are anti-human being.  Cuccinelli is certainly anti-woman, anti-homosexual, and anti-science.  Women are right to be scared in Virginia, home of the state-rapist policy of the transvaginal ultrasound procedures for women exercising their Constitutional right to an abortion.  Proscripted transvaginal ultrasounds = state-mandated sexual assault.

With these candidates consider yourself lucky.  I'll take a stab at it.

Not resigning the AG job once he decided to run for governor

Received gifts not reported from Star Scientific

Withdrew from the govenor’s case against former employee – cost the taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars

Conflict of interest advising an out of state energy company, who has made donations in the range of six figures to his campaign, in a legal dispute over Virginia property owners

Refusing to prosecute one of his big donors Bobby Thompson who defrauded Virginians out of millions

Tax payer money wasting attempt to overturn national law Obamacare from the state’s AG office

Told state universities they could discriminate based on sexual orientation.  The Republican governor overturned it soon after.

Changed the official state seal by covering the tit

Tried to have Virginia’s horribly antiquated anti-sodomy law put back on the books

Introduced a bill to make it more difficult for a woman to seek to divorce without mutual consent.

The UVA / climate change controversy

I'm not a Virginian either anymore, but I know the following few things about Cuchinelli as a state attorney general.  He flirted with birtherism, he sued a University of Virginia professor for publishing a study that supported global warming, he tried to enforce a law against sodomy that had already been determined to be unconstitutional by the Supreme Court, he asserts that homosexual acts should be illegal, he asserts that federal antitrust law are unconstitutional even though they Supreme Court has found them constitutional for 100 years, he has said that Antonin Scalia isn't conservative enough in his interpretation of law, he compares illegal immigration issues to rat extemination, and lots of other stuff.  As an attorney who understands the role of a state Attorney General, I find him appalling.

He's also waist deep in a gifts/corruption scandal (although I admit, the scandal is pretty minor compared to the stuff that goes on in some other states - he's no Blagojevich).

It's really too bad that the Virginia Democrats also nominated a loser.   Neither of these people deserves to be the governor of a day care center.

As I understand it, he didn't do that.  The state universities wanted to issue a policy of non-discrimination.  Cooch sent a letter as Attorney General telling the University's Boards of Governors they lacked the legal authority to adopt statements against discrimination.  He told them the law prohibited them from having such policies.  The Governor (who is also a conservative Republican) immediately overruled him.

Oh hey, he also introduced a bill to make the inability to speak English be legally deemed "misconduct in employment,"  - so that a worker who is laid off from their job is ineligible for unemployment unless he can show proficiency in English.   Luckily, the bill went nowhere in the Legislature.

For all those who replied, thanks very much.

Just based on the facts alone, I can't believe the VA GOP would run such a candidate for such a visible position.  The sad part is that it doesn't sound like Maculiffe is a much better choice.

But hey, I live in MD.  Either one sounds much better than our current Governor.
