Where In The World Is... Darrel Young?!

SemperFi Skins

Recommended Posts

He's been great for blocking and seems to be a pretty decent catcher out of the backfield.

Why are we not utilizing him more in the game. I'd love to see more screen plays with Young out of the backfield like the one below.

I understand we've been pretty much out of the games from the beginning so far, but it'd be nice to involve this young man a lot more than just blocking...

Or at least in the red zone since our troubles down there seem to exist every year. Look at this play below...

Being under utilized, as usual.

I think he's only been in on 25% or so of the snaps since he's been here.  Another reason I'd trade Davis before the deadline, if there is another injury this kid should be able to step in.

Anyone who says he can't obviously didn't see the seam route he caught from Robert during the Ravens game last year.  That was a beautiful play.

Exactly. The kid can do it all... He disguises the block and then goes on noticed as the top comes off the defense... Good hands, solid ball skills, hard hitter (considering he's a converted linebacker)

The running game itself has been under-utilized because in 2 of the 3 games the team has been down by multiple possessions in the 2nd half.

As I stated in the OP, but we've also been going down so early because of our quick 3-and-outs but I think utilizing DY more may prevent these quick 3-and-outs and being down so early in the game. If anything, he's the perfect check down in addition to the TE's

I was wondering the same just yesterday.

Even in a run heavy first half, he doesn't seem to get many reps / touches. FB up the gut once a game appears a thing of the past.

I think Kyle thinks WR is the strength of his offense.

I think the running backs may have something to say about that. But Young and Helu just don't get the touches.

He's been laying some blocks, and his pass protection has been OK.

Griffin threw it to him once vs the Packers as i recall, and he straight dropped a ball that hit his hands.

~Bang

That was against the Eagles right before the pitch out safety.  Catch needs to be made but it was inaccurate and late.  Almost like DY was leaning to run up the field a little further right as Griffin threw it.

This dude is a YAC machine because he is physical.  Helu is a YAC machine because he is fast.  That needs to be more prevelant in this offense going forward.  Especially against a Tampa 2 team after the bye.  MannyPPI has been hinting about this on twitter this morning.

Beat me to it Randy :)  and I totally agree.

Young is the perfect guy to leak out into the flat on a play action pass.

I mean... Spider 2 Y bannana anyone?

What's the word? He thinks we may start utilizing DY and Helu more often?

Cooley mentioned this earlier in the week on his radio program with Czaban and Galdi.

He said that last year, the Pistol formations we ran were much more heavy personnel wise, like DY and Logan on either side of 10 in the diamond with 46 in the back and then Morgan or Garcon as the lone WR.

The TEs could all catch passes, except 84 every now and then.  But it was a much more run friendly personnel package and force the defense to be creative.  You come out with too many DBs and we will run it down your throat... too many LBs and your going to see Rob PA and go on that quick post route.

This year the personnel groupings are much more WR based.  Hank and Morgan are almost always out there as is Garcon.

Just an interesting tid bit that I really didn't pick up on.  I've been so tied up in the execution--- or lack there of.

He just says that in his film review Helu is wide open as a checkdown option more often than not and Rob's not giving it to him.

I appreciate Rob's deep to short vision... Lord knows we waited for Campbell to develop that... but mix it in there every now and again, bubba :)

IF the Skins had a first round pick I would say maybe Shanny is tanking this year for next. I wonder if RGIII and the plan includes letting what happens this year happen and then moving on with the Plan being next year? Pretty much have no idea and grasping at straws at this point.

not trying to derail this thread but i think this is one of the problems this year. Last year we said, when fred davis is healthy next year, when helu is healthy next year, orakpo, etc., but we were winning without them. Now they all come back and we aren't doing squat. Maybe we need to step back and see maybe we won last year because those players are better than our starters? Maybe we are a better team with paulsen at TE instead of davis. And maybe we are better with jackson at LB instead of orakpo. Skill wise, they are better players, but are they a better FIT for the team. Its something the coaches should think about.

I think Davis is being phased out by Reed as we speak.

Helu really hasn't seen the ball a whole lot.  Once off the top of my head maybe?

That post was more of a comment to Randy saying that maybe Kyle thinks that WR's are the strength of our team and I think it's interesting that Randy made that point and Cooley made the same point yesterday.

Certainly that personnel package is lethal if you have TEs and FBs who can block AND catch.  We've seen as much out of the Patriots, too.  We just ran our own version last year.

I think he soooooooooo under utilized as a pass catcher ... if you notice, he also has a lot of shake and bake after the catch also, he can get you yards.

Great call ... I would love to see him split out more and even get more carries out of the FB position.

....

That post was more of a comment to Randy s....

I sure hope i said it first!

Its kind of Cool if so. I suspect he and other members of the media peruse this website, as I would if I was paid to discuss the team. To gather new thoughts and ideas for the show; seek out new perspectives.

I am intrigued by the idea of Reed and Davis in together, along with Garcon. If teams are not going to respect our WRs and press/jam, I want to get the big boys out there a few times a game.

Back to Young, you know whats great about working the FB in space, he is a load and makes those DBs pay.  I used to love the Sellers hurdle.

The Skins are missing playmaker on defense.

Yes, we have Ryan Kerrigan ... and, at times Brian Orakpo creating QB pressure.    D'Hall is a ball hawk.  But, not one else stands out.  It's painful to see London Fletcher struggle in coverage.

The safeties are non existent.

Can't wait for Rob Jackson to join the team after his suspension.

Daryl Young is way under utilized.

Young and Paulsen are both guys that bring that consistency we've lacked this year. Granted, it's hard to blame the wide receivers for poorly placed passes, but these two guys present tough match ups and are far more well rounded than Robinson or Moss (though I love Moss). I'd include Hankerson (based on last year), but at least he gets praise for blocking and route running (and his focus, or whatever, appears improved).

I've always loved DY and have always thought his catching and YAC skills were under used.

Garçon, Hankerson, Paulsen and DY would be a great combination to keep teams off balance. Hankerson might not get the YAC of the others, but he'll move the chains for you. Run a ton of PA with those guys and then pound the rock when things loosen up.

In a broader sense, I think Kyle understands he needs to get the passing game going in a big way to change the fronts we're seeing and that our line is far better at run blocking. Think we saw it vs Detroit and I think we'll see more of it until defenses start respecting the pass more. Or maybe I'm just talking outta my rear :)

The way teams slide their backs out during our blitzes, I never see us do the same.

Their guys are wide open in the times we try.

Our backs Young included, are likely relegated to supporting our OL, versus being the hot route.

But it seems a way to get Young the ball in a little space.
