Simple 'yes' Or 'no' Answer ..... Are You Confident With Cousins Leading This Team If He Ends Up Starting The Season?

I don't want to get into a debate on Roberts health or lack there of. That's been done every which way. But if we imagine a hypothetical where 10 sits until the bye, would you feel confident with Captain Kirk as the main guy? As the thread title suggests, a simple yes/ no answer will suffice for my own curiosity and why.

I like Kirk. From heavily questioning the pick, he's grown on me a lot. Not least with his dedication and play. He looks a talented prospect that could well end up having a decent career as a starter in this league. But I honestly don't want to be forced to go into the season with him as QB1.

Yes, he's looked good filling in for 10 last year. He had our base O running real smooth. But that was in limited action of all of what? 1 start and a couple of bit part games? That's a WORLD of difference from the added burden and pressure of being the starting QB for the Washington Redskins. Hell, it's a toss up who's under more pressure on Sundays in this town. Obama or the man in possession of the QB1 role. And that's added to with the pressure of what 10 brings to the table. Kirks promising. But he's no Robert. At all. And what we can do with our O differs greatly from one to the other. (And I appreciate he's been running some read option in camp. But a live action regular season contest as 'the main man' is a whole different ball game.).

I'm personally praying like mad and crossing most everything I have (well, not everything. That would be a tad too painful ..... ) for 10 to make the Eagles game. If he needs to sit, then I sit him for his health and I'd be happy Kirk won't let us down with what he's asked to do.

I just aren't fully confident what he's asked to do will be enough to leave us in a solid position for when Roberts fully fit to step back in.

Again, purely hypothetical out of interest; but would you feel confident if we have to to put Cousins in a position he's never fully experienced with all the pressure it brings?

Starting the season as the main man in Washington.

Yes. I think he will play efficiently and lead the team. We lose explosiveness on offense, but I think he will hold down the fort just fine.

Nice. Love the straight up confidence TD_w.

His lack of experience and the totally new position he'd be in doesn't bother you at all then?

..... Why even bring this up? .....

Curious mind. And something that's been playing on it.

I think that there are actually things that Kirk does very well. I think that he would be able to hold down the fort.

He's one of the best backups in the league, if not the best.

The offense would be somewhat different, but Mike and Kyle will find things that he can do.

And I don't think inexperience for him is a big deal. He's started a game, had the entire off-season as the starter. He'd be in pretty good shape. It would be as if he was drafted to be a starter and then sat a year. And there were probably a lot of teams that would have signed up for that.

Yes. Extremely confident.

Week 1: vs Philly.  Cousins goes for 275 and 2 TDs.  We win easily.

Week 2: at GB. Cousins goes for 325 2TDs 2 Ints.  Skins lose a shootout.

Week 3: vs Lions. Cousins 250 and 1 TD.  Morris busts for 175 and 3 TDs.  We win easily.

Week 4: at Raiders.  Raiders are the worst team in the league and it aint even close.  Kirk goes for 375 and 3 TDs. Beatdown!

Hit the bye at 3-1 and prepare to unleash a fully operational RG3 Death Star in Dallas.

Quite honestly, I don’t feel that confident with Kirk at the helm. I agree he has looked good in practice and he may be a solid starter in the league, however, on this Redskin team he’s just adequate. Kirk does not have the ability to extend plays like Robert and will be exposed to our average at best offensive line. Teams in this league adjust fast and Kirk,s feet don’t scare anyone (not even his shoes). The games last year that Kirk played in were the Ravens which he came in for Robert and the Browns game. Let’s not forget the brief stint in the Falcons game against a solid defense he threw 2 interceptions (one really bad). Yes, he won the browns game for us but let us not forget that was the browns. Although, I feel better with Kirk than Rex.

That's pretty much where I sway Dave.

As tends to happen on here, folk have gone WAY too far the other way on the praise with Kirk. (Some even suggesting he's every bit as adequate as 10. Which just beggars belief.). I like that we have him. And I like his potential. Certainly more than Interceptus Rexus as you suggested.

But QB1 in this town is a WHOLE different ball game. And I aren't sure he's ready or we can carry someone that isn't.

I am probably going to take a little heat for this but I compare this situation to the Troy Aikman/ Steve Walsh dilemma. Half the town wanted Troy and half wanted Steve. Let us not forget here in our own backyard many moons ago before social media we had a fan favorite named Babe Laufenburg. These were great guys and lit it up in their brief time in the league but where are they now. I am not saying that Kirk is in the same category, I am just saying this is the same situation.

Total aside, but Laufenburg is a real good color guy for the Cowboys radio network these days. (The joys of spending a whole bunch of time in OK and dating someone from the panhandle a whiles back.).

Continue on .....

Yes

And that is answering a question as asked.

Lol. Thanks man. Made me smile.

Yes,

Obviously his not as dynamic as RG3, but Iv seen an improvement from last year.  If he were to start I think there would still be some growing pains mixed in, but feel confident his a leader!  You could tell that just from the last pre-season game, and we will continue to see what he does the rest of the way!  HAIL

Yes if they keep calling plays to HIS strengths; plays to support a guy with 1 start on his resume.

Unlike the first several series of the Cleveland game where we made him a drop back passer. Like usual our drop back pass pro was weak, and the pocket was getting crushed. I still question the play calling to start his NFL career. I thought it was risky. He took some shots.

Yes - although I think we start the season 2-2...losing to the Packers and the Lions (they seem to have our number of late).

Still, I don't think it's the worst position to be in if Robert can come back Week 6.  I would say, barring a setback, we would be poised to make some noise for the remaining 11 games with a fully healthy RGIII...

I would not be at all surpised, if Cousins does start the first four games, to see Mike Shanahan put RG3 out as quesitonable every week to keep the teams we are playing from completely relying on a KC start.  So much better to have them worry about prepping for RG3, as well. :)

Great Question, GHH...

I gota' ask the reasoning here as I see this all the time.

From a guy with little experience at this level who's still relatively unproven in the pro's, regardless of potential; how do you end up at that man? I mean this as no disrespect V_o_R as you're a long standing poster who's views I respect, but that to me is the kind of overrating of our own players that we specialise in on these here boards.

Yes, I think he can start in the NFL. Is his upside as big as RGIII? No but he can lead a team that in my opinion is gonna get no more than 10 wins anyway.

I do not know what it is, but I still feel like we are something away from being a REAL contender. I still feel like this season we will make the playoffs but we wont go far, possibly another 1st round exit maybe win the first round but not the 2nd rnd.

So in a word yes I still feel like kirk can lead our team.
