Is there a spot for Chris Thompson on the roster

On his first carry he was holding the bar with the wrong hand and I knew he was going to fumble. Didn't think it was going to be his second carry though. Upset — I was really excited to see how his speed translates to NFL. Gotta be able to do the basics/obvious little things correctly...

Based on last nights performance, i think Thompson played his way down to the practice squad. The best backs we have right now are Almo, Young, Helu, Williams and Royster. Thompson is gonna need to step up big time over the next two games to show that he can add something to the offense that Royster and Williams can't. Otherwise, Royster and Williams are more reliable at this point from what I can see.

All that being said, I hope CT can show us his explosiveness in the next two weeks.

One other thing, Jamison looked good running between the Tackles last night. I can see him on the practice squad too.

Here's what I don't get. I understand that the play-calling needs to be vanilla, but if you're going to give Thompson some reps, why not find ways to get him in space and see what he can do?

He's never going to be the guy you turn to for our traditional running game. If Morris is hurt or tired, Helu will take those carries. Let's evaluate Thompson on the types of plays that Thompson would be running in the regular season (I assume sweeps, screens, and swing passes).

I think the cause for his fumble was due to the impact from Shamarko Thomas... that kid was bringing it every time.  That was one of the main reasons you saw CT holding his arm while walking off the field with what appeared as a stinger.  CT and Jamison will get better but I think it's best to stash them both on the PS.  Keiland looks like he's ready to take the 3rd RB role for this season...

Furthermore, I think CT needs to bulk up more and while I like Jamison, there may not be a place for him on this team with Morris entrenched as the Starter and Helu/ Keiland reserving their rights for the 2nd and 3rd roles.

I think that Kyle was trying to test his brunt between the tackles and as you saw last night, the result of it was less than gratifying.

With next week being the dress rehearsal, idk if we see CT or JJ against Buffalo. Maybe we get a heavy dose of Helu and Williams again. I saw more of Williams then I would have liked, but Shanny is going on a RB rotation, we saw a lot of Royster, Helu last week. Yesterday we got Morris and Williams, with CT and JJ getting garbage time, and Helu had that nice TD. I think next time we see them in is vs Tampa Bay..

I liked CT's first carry, moving the pile at 5'8 is pretty impressive, the 2nd carry I'll give credit to Thomas, that was a mean hit and it looks like he'll make an impact on that roster..CT's pass protection looked good. Overall he didn't blow me away, but gotta give him some time and the fact it's his first action in almost a year.

I don't care about last night's game ... Thompson >>> Royster, Williams and Jamison.

By a wide margin.

If you're going to be a RB on this roster, you better be able to grind it and perform the basics adequately or you'll never see the field!  This squad is far from deep enough to be able to accommodate more "specialists" than the standard ST trio.  We need backs that can run the ball, dammit!

Hard to write a guy off so soon after coming back from injury all offseason and only getting a few plays called in a preseason game.

No, those handful of plays didn't go well but they also, hopefully, weren't the plays he was drafted to run which is kind of baffling in itself.

That's fine but there is still a matter of playing to his strengths. No sense stuffing a square peg into a round hole, get him in space and on the edge and see if he can do what he was drafted to do.

First time I've heard asking a RB to tote between the tackles, "stuffing a square peg in a round hole"!  How about learning to walk before you run?  Last night was vanilla with no nuts and fudge and Thompson choked on the second spoonfull.  All I'm saying is that the man needs to show he can run the ball before he gets to play on the fringes.

With Morris and Helu firmly entrenched they need the backups to be able to fill in. Williams is top backup for me so that leaves only one spot. If Thompson is the home run threat they say he is maybe he's worth it. Let's see how the next couple of preseason games go.

There's not a RB in the league who holds onto the ball after the guided missile hit like the one Thompson took... full speed helmet to the forearm and ball. So I don't hold that fumble against him.

I suspect he'll get more carries on Saturday, and we'll finally see why he's been the most impressive back in camp the last two weeks

That clearly wasn't the intent of my post. Regardless, I can see why you'd say that. I mean, Robinson clearly proved he could run the entire route tree as a WR before being used to his strength as a deep threat last year. There are plenty of other examples.  Does Cousins have to show he can run the full playbook including read option keepers for first downs before he gets to play to his strengths and talents?

Thompson can run and run well. His strength is getting in space and on the edge though where he has a speed advantage. It doesn't make sense to make judgments on the guy because he got stuffed on a few inside runs against the Steelers backup defense when he wasn't brought in to pound the ball between the tackles. Given, at times he will have to, that isn't his ideal situation.

That's all I'm saying.

  • 3 weeks later...

Very disappointing day from him. I think he got past the 15 once on KR, and did anyone tell him you can't return punts when they go past the 10 yard line? Cause I'm pretty sure he either returned of fair caught all of them..Killed us in field position, though Philly's kicker had a good day. None the less.

Terrible day from him, whether he suffered an ankle sprain or not, I'm not surprised Shanny had Moss as his return guy in the second half. Hopefully CT improves but that was a pretty bad effort on his part.
