Califan007 The Constipated
Might as well have a single thread for any reports on players during minicamp... A few things I liked reading while in the BRBN forum: Running back Roy Helu Jr. (toe) and cornerback Chase Minnifield (knee), who returned to practice for the first time last week after rehabbing their injuries, both practiced fully Tuesday. Shanahan said Minnifield, who missed all of his rookie season with a torn amterior cruciate ligament, is fully healthy and ready to compete for a job. Minnifield rotated in and out with Richard Crawford and E.J. Biggers on the second units. Minnifield recorded an interception when he undercut a deep route from Rex Grossman to Josh Morgan and picked off the pass. Biggers and safety DeJon Gomes also intercepted Grossman. The Redskins hosted kicker/punter John Potter for a tryout to provide some competition for Kai Forbath and Sav Rocca. The Western Michigan product was a seventh-round pick of Buffalo’s in 2012. After working primarily with the second unit during OTAs, rookie safeties Phillip Thomas and Bacarri Rambo and cornerback David Amerson all joined the first-team defense on the field for the majority of the 11-on-11 drills. Thomas showed both inexperience and potential on one particular play. As he lined up deep in a cover-2 look, he got caught looking into the backfield and wide receiver Aldrick Robinson got behind him. Grossman fired a pass to Robinson, but Thomas recovered, showed good closing speed and knocked the ball loose from behind along the sideline as Robinson tried to secure it. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/football-insider/wp/2013/06/11/redskins-minicamp-observations-from-tuesdays-practice/ Play Of The Day: Offense It was a comptetive day for both sides of the Redskins roster, as momentum swung back andforth between offense and then defense. There were plenty of big plays to choose from, but the most acrobatic catch of the day goes to undrafted rookie receiver Nick Williams late in practice during full-team drills. Quarterback Pat White was under center and rolled out to his right, in the direction of Williams near the sideline. He flicked the pass to Williams, who was facing the quarterback and let the ball squirt over his right shoulder. Spinning to his left, Williams went 270 degrees in a flash, finding the football in the air and securing the catch. There are certainly easier ways to make the catch, but Williams did the job and showed good vision to correct his mistake. His best chance of making the team is likely as a returner on special teams, but he will likely need to show competence on offense as well. However he is able to make the catch, he will need to catch as many as possible. Play Of The Day: Defense Redskins receiver Aldrick Robinson has been heavily targeted during offseason workouts, getting an opportunity to flash his speed and agility all over the field. Sometimes, however, his physical gifts are dwarfed by a defender who puts himself in a better position to make the play. That happened one time in particular during full-team drills, when Rex Grossman targeted Robinson on a deep pass to the end zone. Double-covered by a safety and cornerback E.J. Biggers, Robinson was jostled out of position and the deep pass fell into the outstretched arms of Biggers, who stepped out of the back of the end zone before practicing a return down the near sideline. http://www.redskins.com/news-and-events/article-1/Redskins-Tuesday-Minicamp-Practice-Notes/fb421f3e-8bd4-4616-967b-32fe7ec85ef8?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter Some tweets: Redskins @RedskinsShanahan on LB @Rak98: "Rak, the way he practices, it's like he's possessed." #HTTR #LiveIt Shanahan on signing WR @DonteStallworth: "After today, yeah...Hopefully we'll get to sign him here in the next couple of days." #HTTR Mike Jones @MikeJonesWaPoShanahan said he told Stallworth he thought he made a mistake signing w New England and not returning to redskins. Mr. Sinister
Good to hear about the return of Helu and Minnefield, who may be the biggest wild card entering training camp. It's exciting to hear how high Shanahan is on Orakpo. If the defense makes a huge improvement this year, he will be one of the biggest (if not the biggest) reasons why. 98ORAKPO98
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/dc-sports-bog/wp/2013/06/11/brian-orakpos-super-secret-facemask/ This is just for now. I’ve got something else in the works,” said Orakpo. “It’s a secret. No one else will have this one. I want to credit J. Tuck, the homie, for starting this trend. But I went ahead and created my own little deal. I got it coming soon.” Orakpo has yet to wear the new mask, and when I caught up to him today he told me he decided to save it for training camp. He was willing to give me a teaser, though. “Think Bane,” he said. “From Batman.” http://espn.go.com/blog/nfceast/post/_/id/52076/rg-iii-speaks-and-other-redskins-notes Griffin quoted Williams when asked about how Brian Orakpo was looking as he works to return from a pectoral muscle injury: "To quote my left tackle, 'Rak's out there pass-rushing like it's the NFC Championship Game." Indeed, Orakpo looks as though nothing ever happened, and he talks and acts like a guy who has missed a lot of time and can't wait until he's allowed to tackle someone again. Burgold
I like hearing about Rak's hunger. Probably the combo of missing a year and realizing how much he loves the sport and it being a contract year.

Probably the combo of missing a year and realizing how much he loves the sport and it being a contract year. All that and he actually plays for a good team now, with a top 5 offense, and he didn't get a chance to play with that last year. If I were him I'd be foaming at the mouth like a caged beast too. CrabR
I am interested in seeing how emmznuel ogbuehi does. His 40 and bench are higher than Davis or Reed. The kid is raw but has an upside I don't think niles paul will be on the team this year unless it is a special teams. he shows me nothing as a pass catcher

DC9
First, what a class move by the organization signing that kid up for a day. I saw that on my facebook feed last night and that it was just fantastic. Second, I'm a Helu fan and glad he's doing well... but he's taking the road less traveled back to this RB rotation and he's got his work cut out for him. Third and not least, the news on Chase Minnifield just made my whole day. I'm very excited for this kid. Lots of potential as a bigger playmaking corner on the outside of the defense. I'm not sure he can translate to the slot, but I like this kid a lot. Everyone right now thinks Morris is/was the steal of the draft last year, this kid could change your mind if he pans out. We're talking about a guy who could play CB for the next 10 years for this team if he can stay healthy. Big if, but he's all heart.

Anytime Shanny says he's "playing like a man possessed" I get excited. The secondary improves with Orakpo's return, and the front seven improves with two new safety man and Amerson/Minnifield as your 3/4. How good can this defense be after the rookies get a little wet behind the ears and the front seven stays healthy? I'm thinking by week 6 or 7 we're going to be very tough to play against on defense. LittleTinyUnbornBaby
Orakpo's facemask ? They are calling that the "Shredder" facemask, like from Ninja Turtles, so no it's not but, this facemask thing is getting a little out of hand don't you think. Personally I thought it was cool when Tuck did it, cause it was different. Now it seems like ever d-lineman is doing it and it's getting played out. This on that Dockett has on looks terrible IMO, looks like it should have been trashed when it was made. I like Tuck's because it was simple when he first did it, now DWare has done it and Orakpo is doing it... just played out. The picture I saw of Rak's facemask on google actually looks pretty good I think and I do like it but, I don't think that it is the "Bane" one he is speaking of. KDawg
The secondary is interesting. Haslett notes they worked them in, but the fact that all three of them took first team reps should either really scare us or really encourage us as a fanbase. Not sure which one at this point. I'm interested in reading reports on Will Montgomery and if his snaps have improved. He rainbows snaps like it's his official job to do so. More than once the ball lobbed back there and forced Griffin to make an athletic snag and make a play, or pick it off his shoe laces. Get the ball back there, Monty! I am with Larry on the secondary (see, that rhymed like a mofo). This coaching staff seems to be more in the "overwhelming" of players in practice so that the game looks slower on gameday. Not sure how that works with defense... but I am just likening it to the constant blitzing of Robert during the offseason program last year. And as far as Monty's snaps go, that is definitely something he needs to work on. He had a pro-bowl caliber year last year and there is no reason he can't repeat, but the devil is in the details. Putting on your coach hat, is that a technique thing (stance, etc) or is it something that he just needs to work on? pjfootballer
Hard to trick the Steelers defense period. You could use that play agianst the Lions or Jets.
