Obama renews push for closing Guantanamo

US President Barack Obama has said he will renew efforts to close down the US military prison in Guantanamo Bay, after extra medical staff were sent to the facility to help address a hunger strike that spread to nearly two-thirds of the detainees.

He told a news conference on Tuesday that he has asked a team of officials to review the issue and will make another appeal to Congress to shut down the prison holding "terror" suspects in Cuba.

Obama, who ordered the detention centre closed upon taking office but was thwarted repeatedly by Congress, which made it harder to move prisoners elsewhere, also said that he was not surprised that there are problems at the facility, where 100 of 166 inmates are on hunger strike.

"I continue to believe we have to close Guantanamo. I think it is critical for us to understand that Guantanamo is not necessary to keep America safe," he said.

"It is expensive. It is inefficient. It hurts us in terms of our international standing. It lessens cooperation with our allies on counterterrorism efforts. It is a recruiting tool for extremists."
