DogofWar1
Wonderful. I suppose we'll be repealing the right to counsel and a fair trial any day now.
Boss_Hogg
So we have 50 Democratic Senators attempting to distract the public from the putrid economy, obamacare, illegal domestic surveillance, memos outlining a legal basis for killing U.S. citizens without a trial, and U.S. veterans dying while on top secret VA wait lists. Oh, but they’ll save us from an NFL team.
Mr. Sinister
Pretty much Imagine if, God forbid, this team is actually successful and makes a deep playoff run, or a Superbowl run in the next 3 years, and the team is still the Washington Redskins. What will be the talk of Superbowl week? We already saw what happened once this team acquired a very visible, possibly transcendent talent, and went on a 7 game winning streak, causing people to pay extra attention to the team. Things have changed dramatically in regards to SB coverage since the last time we were there. It would be a PR catastrophe, especially when it comes to the Redskins, who can't seem to get out of their own way when it comes to PR
SWFLSkins
Having cured all the other real world woes, it is good to see the Senators make proper use of their valuable time serving the public, AS IF.
elkabong82
I love the backlash those 50 senators are getting from people telling them to stop wasting their time on such BS. Still waiting on evidence that shows majority of Native Americans are actually offended. If you're going to force a name change based on the offense of a small few, then Chiefs has to be changed and so does Buccaneers and Raiders since they are named after murderers, rapists, and thieves. NFL at least has to be aware that changing a name due to people complaining is only going to lead to more people complaining about other name changes. But screw it, I say if we change, let's stick it to them and go with the Red Devil idea. Keep the name, change the context entirely. Then our team logo is a devil and the PC crowd can revel in their fake victory of forcing a change on behalf of people that mostly don't support it, and enjoy that they disenfranchised MANY Native Americans who root for the team because of the name, and now instead of honoring Native Americans the team will have a devil on there. They want us to be the enemy so bad, they want to hate on Snyder so bad, let's embrace it. Washington Redskins with a devil logo. That being said, not sure exactly how the government is going to force a name change on us. Hardly any Republicans would support that. They could try and deny trademark, but the team brand has much more protection than just trademark. So the PC crowd backed by Dems can bark all they want, but it's hard to see how they are going to bite, especially when the majority of NAs and of all Americans do not support them. Riggo#44
Susan Cantwell, the author of this letter, is a complete hypocrite. She is so damned concerned about the welfare of Native Americans and then says this: Attending the game to support the visiting Seahawks, she said the presentation of Washington’s team was “just so shocking to me,” and that the Redskins were offering “a caricature of a team that is not just respected by Indian Country.” “There are many, many issues in what we refer to as Indian Country that I would say are about the health and safety and welfare of those individuals,” she said. “Yet this issue is a reminder to all of us that intolerance in our communities is a problem. We’re here to say that we respect these tribal entities that have requested this name change. … So I hope my colleagues will help us in this effort to get the NFL to do the right thing.” Link: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/dc-sports-bog/wp/2014/05/22/maria-cantwell-explains-the-senates-letter-to-the-nfl-about-the-redskins/?wprss=rss_redskins-page-shell&utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter&clsrd
Diesel Hog
The only name that works is Washington. No Mascot, no logo, kinda like the Browns. New fan gear can just look like this:
deejaydana
I don't know where I stand on this but to echo others sentiments: Don't Congress critters have more pressing matters to deal with at this time ? I would take this more seriously if a huge amount of native Americans were forwarding this issue but I don't see that happening.

Thekyle1591
I do think that if the name changes, it is because Snyder wants to change it. He shouldn't be forced to do something with his team that he doesn't want to do. Just like I don't think Sterling should have to sell his team, despite his blatant ignorance. I agree, but the NBA owners group do have a right to protect their image. Had I been them I would have let the ensuing player and consumer boycot do the work. Or they could have said "fine the team is yours, but you now have the most expensive B league team in the world".

A right to protect their image? Well then the NFL owners have a right to force Snyder to change the name, to protect their brand from a racial slur. I find it funny how we have supposed "freedom of speech" yet when someone says he doesn't like blacks (which he has the right to do) he is forced to sell his team. The idea of political correctness has seemingly overtaken the idea of freedom of speech.

It's pretty pathetic to think that adults get offended from a team name that has not been used in a racist context for all 80 years. Don't people have something better to do than **** about a name that they choose to be offended by?
Gamebreaker
Ok, I don't see what any of this has to do with Sterling. Dan Snyder has never said any remarks publicly, or that we know of privately, to put him on the level of Sterling. This is the distinction that makes the NFL's situation different from the NBA's. There aren't any NFL players threatening to boycott next season. Snyder isn't forcing his players to dress up in the NA attire and bringing women in the locker room to look at their "beautiful bodies." So this is why the NFL isn't going to try to force Snyder out of ownership, and why these stupid Senators are just trying to engender some goodwill among voters. And they need to foster some goodwill, they suck at their jobs so badly enough as it is.

Hazel-Ra
Yes, let's take out our anger on Native Americans. Well, I can't boycott the Senate. According to Harjo and company they represent all Native Americans. If casinos start getting boycotted then maybe Native Americans will start being louder about the Redskins name not being offensive. Facetious of course, but you know the boycott on our team is coming. You know it, I know it.
