Commander PK
Yeah, I agree that "savages" is definitely something that crosses a line. From the article you linked: Is savages really derived from a specific tribe? I've never heard that before. He is not saying that the term savages is derived from a specific tribe, he is saying the last three are. "OR names derived from specific tribes..." Commander PK
Good to see some more heat on Halbritter. http://dailycaller.com/2013/10/22/anti-redskins-campaigner-runs-abusive-tribal-government-oneida-members-say/ "Halbritter condemned TheDC’s reporting as “bigotry” and claimed that “you don’t have to be an Indian” to have an opinion on the Redskins issue." Call me crazy, but it seems to me that the people who are supposedly being offended should have the opinion that counts the most.
Xameil
I always thought savages was a derogatory term used to describe native americans When did savages become a term to describe Native Americans only? Savages as far as I know was used to describe any perceived violent civilization, community, or group of people. Some call the tribes in South America, Africa, New Guinea, etc. savages. I have heard groups in the US called savages, so when did we decide to just single out Native Americans for this?

You would think he would have known...they are Native Americans. Edit: I hope NYS passes legalizing casinos in NY...that will take money away from this douche. But I would assume that maybe their imagery links them to Native Americans. Warriors is generic too, but if we changed our name from Redskins to Warriors and kept everything else the same, we would be using Warriors to describe Native Americans. Seriously, I think it is used in other contexts MUCH more then in Native American terms. That term was used WELL before the Americas were discovered, and has been used to describe MANY more civilizations and is still in use. The amount of time the Native Americans were ever wrongly referred to as savages is a micro blip on the timeline...
Stugein
If the team's hand is forced at some point down the road, I personally really liked the idea of going with no alternate name like some soccer teams do. As this user on Reddit put it: "We do it like the European soccer clubs: the name is officially 'Washington Football' or D.C.F.C. However, fans still call them the Redskins. Logo stays, song stays. See Manchester United a.k.a. The Red Devils." The organization is off the hook, but the fan-base keeps the tradition alive.

All I'm saying is that the cases of "Savages" being lumped into THIS discussion probably only relate to teams who are using it in the Native American context. That's all. There could be 100 teams named Savages with 3 of those teams having Native American mascots. I would guess/hope that only those 3 are being referred to here. I understand what you are saying, but it bothers me the way the media tries to always stick in a negative term, or word to try and make associate the negativity of that word with words that aren't necessarily negative. RFKFedEx
Southeastern Oklahoma State U. was likely the most significant org. to carry the name 'Savages' in relation to a Native theme. In 2006 the school altered the name to 'Savage Storm' and all Native imagery was retired.

I wonder if another option would be to use something like the Washington Football Nationals, i.e. The New York Football Giants. I wonder what it would take to make something like that happen. Just share a name and elements of the Nationals logo with the baseball team.
Mr. Sinister
When did savages become a term to describe Native Americans only? I said it I thought it was a derogatory term used to describe Native Americans. That's a word I've heard over and over, certainly when it comes to movies/literature that portrayed them as menacing, animalistic barbarians. I never implied it was only them, so I really have no idea what you're getting at.

Popeman38
Well, CNN was roaming the cash lots interviewing folks at the Bears game. They seemed disappointed. They claimed an Oneida Nation poll showed the 72% of Redskins fans supported changing the name. I asked them why they would cite a biased poll and not use a polling company, since all the other polls conducted by the media indicated not just the exact opposite, but overwhelming numbers in support of keeping the name. The reporter looked quite shocked that I wasn't just a drunken buffoon who had no idea there was a name debate going. And she kept rephrasing questions to try to elicit a response. pjfootballer
My jaw dropped when I saw Lee Courso doing what he was doing. I couldn't believe it. JMS
Danny must know he can either bend or break under this onslaught of fairness and rightiousnous he finds himself confronting... I know, this same ilk he's facing took away my GI Joe doll in the early 1970's and replaced him with Action Joe; a gingered fuzzy haired white guy with a kung foo grip.. My Joe didn't need kung foo, he had a m1 carbine...... action Joe got a side arm and a more fuel efficient multi wheeled ATV... Love the Onion I think you anti name change folks are missing the entire political correct boat our nation is trying to board and shame on you for that. I mean shesh just because you don't hear deafening racism in our fight song; doesn't mean it's not there! Hail to the Redskins! Hail Victory! Braves on the Warpath! Fight for old D.C.! Run or pass and score -- we want a lot more! Beat 'em, Swamp 'em, Touchdown! -- Let the points soar! Fight on, fight on 'Til you have won Sons of Wash-ing-ton. Rah!, Rah!, Rah! Hail to the Redskins! Hail Victory! Braves on the Warpath! Fight for old D.C.! *especially offensive I'm actually out front of this poliical correctness boat. I'm calling for the immediate demolition of the Jefferson memorial... After all it was Mr Jefferson who used the term "merciless Indian Savages" in our Nations Declaration of Indepence... I beleive the full quote went "merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions" .. Next up is Mount Rushmore. There isn't a face on that wall which will survive our new modest solute to political correctness. George Washington ( Gnadenhutten massacre ) Thomas Jefferson ( Declaration of Indepence quote given above ) Abraham Lincoln ( ordered largest mass execution in US history all of whom were Indians ) Teddy Roosevelt ( see below quotes) Teddy Roosevelt I don't go so far as to think that the only good Indians are dead Indians, but I believe nine out of ten are, and I shouldn't inquire too closely into the case of the tenth. The most vicious cowboy has more moral principle than the average Indian. Teddy Roosevelt “This continent had to be won. We need not waste our time in dealing with any sentimentalist who believes that, on account of any abstract principle, it would have been right to leave this continent to the domain, the hunting ground of squalid savages. It had to be taken by the white race.” I mean if Hail to the Redskins is blatant racism and we know it is; because they say so.... really how can we have any memorials older than say 1989, 1995 ? We here in Washington have plenty of other fine franchise names to choose from. Has anybody called the Harlem Globtrotters to inquire if the Washington Generals name can be purchased for a reasonable fee?
