The Official ES All Things Redskins Name Change Thread (Reboot Edition---Read New OP)

Recommended Posts

The PFT article said 5 times, which is a good amount of games.

Another reason to laugh at PFT. It could be five games, but that "fifth game" is a Saturday game versus Philly that could be moved to NFL Network. That's why I said "at least four times". PFT can kick rocks, listen to your boy MLSkins. :D

I can see changing my mind because facts change, but not because a group of people I normally disagree with I find myself agreeing with. Sorry don't be offended, but to me this is opposite of free thinking.

Yes. This is exactly where I find myself. Now, I'm not a very political person at all but I have always considered myself very left-leaning. I have never voted Republican in anything in the 25+ years I have been voting. My instinct is to always just follow the party line when it came to social issues. I feel like the opposite of s0crates on this, whose opinions and ability to articulate them I respect very much. It's uncomfortable being on the same side as a lot of people I normally disagree with on many issues and/or downright loathe, but I'm not changing my opinion based on that. It does make me reflect on it a little more though. I'm not 100% "The name is not offensive" guy. I'm more like "Show me how many of those who truly have a dog in this fight find it offensive" guy.

Maybe I've just never paid enough attention, but the way major news outlets report on this issue is a little sad and gross. Walter Cronkite "and that's the way it is" style news is dead. As has been rehashed a gazillion times now, sensationalist page hits style of news rules today. It sucks, and sadly it took this debate to make me realize how prevalent and permeating it is. Couple that with the army of social media activists and celebrity dolts, who have recently become enlightened, and like to call anyone with a pro-name opinion a racist,...yeah I'm not comfortable on their side either. Mouthbreather, meet mouthbreather.

At this point, I'm no longer debating...just listening, learning, and also ignoring a lot of noise (which I am better at detecting now).

Aft this point, I'm done hearing about it. Everyday there is a new person making a stink about it. I'm a stubborn SOB but at this point, I'm worn out and hate hating about it. Change it & Kerry these tools pick up another cause.

I'm not too sure we should be happy that the very bottom of the internet barrel supports our team name. I'm usually appalled at the sexism, racism, homophobia, and other hate filled, mouth breathing mind sets that I find in comments sections- so that now that when I find myself agreeing with THAT crowd, I'm forced to wonder.

damn... folks really have their tails up and are attacking anything that doesn't look like what they agree with (to me the opposite of free thinking). take your finger off the trigger and watch where you point that thing.

1. i haven't "changed my mind." i'm starting to wonder. i fully believe and support the ricky gervais (sp) quote you posted. we buddies now?

2. if i see that people that usually make be recoil in shock, horror, despair, and pity agreeing with something that i believe, i'm going to take a look at that issue again. it could be anything... not just this issue. at the very least, having internet trolls supporting the pro-name side doesn't exactly aid in our credibility.

Ok, ok, I think what got me was the wording, not that you have to agree with anything I say or think. Forced is a strong word, if you feel it forced to wonder.  I understand that is you, I said it would not alter my opinion. If that helps? If a large mass of Native Americans were in the streets protesting and Chief King, Jr. was speaking about the topic or a similar call for change I would be the first Skins fan to demand change. I hate, HATE inequity. I wish we were all born inside out.

I do agree having uneducated trolls on the keep the name side is as bad as having trolls with no knowledge on the subject going off because they say the name is racist.  :):)

"Representatives of Tulsa County’s Native American tribes want a name change for the Washington Redskins Football Team.

A resolution and request for the name change will not go to the Washington Redskins owner himself, but it will go to three prominent associations within the NFL."

Dude, are you totally incapable of linking? It's pretty easy for me. It is a simple copy and paste. But, as I expressed earlier in this thread, you waste people's time and you can spread false information this way. You wasted mine a couple pages back.

You quoted this, so you need to link. If you are not going to link you your posts, then stop posting.

Edit: Oops, I just realized I was late to the party.

Tulsa, huh?

You mean the city established in Indian Territory by native Americans and was exploited and taken by Whites when oil was discovered?

As we all know, all that oil sure went a long way to help the Native.

It helped them right out of their land, right out of their ancestry, and right out of the wealth under their feet.

I can definitely see how changing the name of a football team is so important to preserving their dignity.

This argument seems like a variant of "Don't we have bigger issues to worry about?"

I've never understood why we can't care about big issues and little issues. I have a five year old with speech delays. I have an 11 year old with serious anger issues. I also have a wild eyebrow hair that periodically appears and makes me look 2 percent less attractive. I can deal with all three things.

Because the only issue being addressed is the little one.  The only person addressing the big issue is Dan Snyder, and they raked him over the coals for it.

Per the previous post from nemocystem, this isn't even their right to complain about the name.  Redskins is a term used for separate Indian Nations, not theirs, and they have no right to protest it.  The ones who claim that name, want to keep it, it is an honorable moniker to them.  Oneida wouldn't think it honorable because they aren't part of the Indian Nation who use the term Redskins to describe themselves.

How about using facts instead of emotion?

These seem to be your positions:

The only person addressing serious Native American issues today is Dan Synder.

Some Natives are allowed to have a say on this issue and some aren't.

I am not sure I agree with this.

1)  I will not attempt to say whether or not these are somebody else's positions.

2)  As to the former, I suspect I would also disagree with that statement.  (Although, if you were to modify your theory to "the only person in this debate", then yeah, it's possible that he is.)

3)  And I think your latter theory, I think that yeah, it's true.  The complainers with the budget and the soapbox and the megaphone seem to be getting lots of attention.  The 10 people who disagree with every one of them?  Sorry.  Not hearing from them.  In fact, it's like pulling teeth to get the name changers to even admit that well, yeah, there are some who disagree with them.

Well, maybe it just sticks in my craw a bit when the issues that affect them hit so directly, with so little progress made on them.

Issues that in comparison show this for the non-issue it really is.

especially when complaining of mistreatment in a city stolen and exploited right out from under them.

it's like a city council spending it's time worrying about sending a pro-drug message by arguing over the name "pothole" instead of actually fixing them so people would stop wrecking their cars .

Except no on is doing that. (I'm sorry, but your craw is not the only craw in on this thread, and my craw really gets annoyed anytime pulls out the completely made up "such and such" could  be an offensive word when no one has ever made that argument about "such and such.")

And - in all honesty - I think the ship has sailed on the "Give us back our land" argument. We aren't going to tear down Topeka and bring back the buffalo anytime soon. (Though maybe we should).

In honor of you Tweedr, I will try almond milk, not in cereal or coffee mind you, that's too white for me. I will drink it over ice in a rocks glass, does that qualify?

Hey, buffalo!

go Bills!

So long as it's easy for the Kardashian Kulture to wrap their little heads around, the publicity is free, and so the low hanging fruit continues to be plucked.

My craw is certainly not the only craw, but part of what this board is good for is talking about what cricks our respective craws.

Wait...wuh? What did I miss? I do not think I meant what you think I meant. I'm in agreement with the author of the article.

He makes the point:

Clearly the Oneida are a separate “nation” from those who claim Redskin heritage and, per the opinion of Redskinned natives, have no say on the issue of the team’s name. It’s like the British (as a different nation) complaining or finding offense with the American NFL name “Patriot” – it’s not Britain’s business to complain about a team specific to our nation. Nor is it the Oneida “nation’s” business to complain about the Redskins “nation’s” name.

Pay special attention to the last two lines

Oneida is synonymous with Ray Halbitter, who is a gambler.

In any sound mind, this should cause instant distrust of any of his motivations beyond how he can affect his casino's chances to win.

Anyone who trusts a gambler is a fool. Couple this with the exploitation of what he's already done to his own "people", and his entire complaint rings hollow.

That, and he's on Buffalo Bills territory, and has yet to complain about the single most offensive name in the entire history of sports when it come to Native americans.

Know why?

because their fans are in his casino, betting on football games.

i know i know,, too much to think about for the Kardashian Kulture.

sorry.
