The Official ES All Things Redskins Name Change Thread (Reboot Edition---Read New OP)

I was debating with one name changer on the Twitter who claims the logo is a severed head. I was like okay, we're done here.

well, they tried to fit the whole body on the helmet....but it didn't fit?

Here's your sign

Jesus people are stupid.

I worry this MO will discourage people from speaking out in favor of the name more and more.

don't count on it.  If anything it's going to make people more defensive and more verbally combative.  The people who are for the name are just as passionate for the name as those against it.  This debate has long been at an impasse because neither side is going to budge an inch, and there is nothing that is going to force the issue to a head.

and when I say people more defensive and more verbally combative...it's not going to be just Redskins fans.  There is an incredible amount of resentment brewing with people over this topic.  With all our problems, people think this issue being constantly at the forefront of the news is ridiculous.

All you have to do is read 90% of the comments below every single article on the topic.  Just read them. Those are the real people "at large" out here, the average Joe's and Jane's, many of which don't care one iota about the Washington Redskins.

They think this issue is a distraction and a waste of time.  That is the truth of the matter.

It's one thing for you and me or Joe on the comments section. But how many ceos, politicians (other then those catering to the teams base in the local area), and other people in prominent positions do you see saying "yes, the name is fine". They all hem and haw because they know if they say it's OK the next article written by wise, pft, or any other media outlet that has already said they are against the name will write an article about how they are racist or supporting a racist position.

Which is odd because usually comments after articles are filled with racists, trolls, and other Internet crazies. You'd think this issue would draw them in large numbers. Maybe they've grown lazy and only show up to the stories Drudge links.

This is true, and honestly I haven't seen much of that except when the article is hosted by a website that essentially allows anonymous posts...and even then still a lot of support.  Plenty of people on Facebook have commented in support of the name.  I have seen thousands of comments in support (or likes of comments in support) of the Redskins under just about any article linked to Facebook to do with this issue.

People with real names and real faces...and they aren't hiding behind anything.

Redskins easily have the most classiest Native American logo in sports, EASILY. Hell I want to say in sports in general.

In the article, when he said that "it got to him" when they called him Chief, but said "you damn right!" when they called him Redskin,

Powerful... Bet you they won't publish that article over the masses.

You will NEVER see that article at Deadspin

But why in the Washington Post?

yes, why indeed.

Maybe it's because the Post has had a very public feud with Dan Snyder over everything under the sun since he bought the team.

It's been so bad, he revoked their tickets long before they started their name crusade.

for someone so interested in the history of the team, it's surprising you had to ask such a question.

So are they printing the Wetzel's perspectives to make up for that?

http://deadspin.com/political-blogger-hired-by-redskins-resigns-after-two-w-1601635758

Tribbett and the Skins did seem like a particularly bizarre fit, not just for his politics (though, yes, the controversy has become inflexibly politicized) but for the fact that Tribbett first made his name by identifying a racial slur where others didn't notice.

In 2006, Tribbett obtained and publicized a tape of Virginia Senator George Allen calling an Indian-American man a "macaca," an outdated slur for dark-skinned people. It led to a narrow defeat for Allen, the brother of Washington GM Bruce Allen. In researching the provenance of "macaca," Tribbett cited a list of ethnic slurs that also happened to include the word "redskin."

More recently, ICTMN dug up some of Tribbett's tweets from a Las Vegas card game in 2010 in which he went for some really cheap jokes about a Native American player next to him. That's likely the "personal attack" Tribbett cited in announcing his resignation. That, and "things got a little out of control on Twitter," as he told the Washington Post.

He got involved with all of this when he claimed that the name was a tribute to The Boston Tea Party - which is original.

The Boston Tea Party association is something not even the team itself has claimed, so if this was a preview of how Tribbett intended to galvanize support for the name, maybe it's a good thing this didn't work out.

Another gem. Tribbett's Tweet from a Vegas casino in 2010:

"Just took Chief for his last 300. I'd call it a scalping, but that seems uncalled for."

Can we assume the term "Chief" was not intended to be honorary in this instance?

Did the guy look like the former mayor of Kansas City? If so, we probably need a historian to make that determination.

From Akron Legal Times

...group of (FedEx)investors filed a request that FedEx respond to their concerns about the damage done to the company’s reputation by its continued association with the team. After last week’s USPTO ruling, the pressure was magnified, with objectors asking that the company address the issue at the annual shareholders meeting in the fall. FedEx’s disassociation with the team could cost the Redskins approximately $75 million over the next 10 years."

yes.  the people defending thename are the ones that a gonna drive the nails into this casket, and play t.a.p.s.    The more I read THIS thread, the less supportable the name seems... i need to get my ass to the Harjo et Hallbritter sites, so i can immerse myself in THEIR nonsense and build back my internal support for the name :)

Meh. Some company will always step up to the plate if FedEx leaves.
