Well from that perspective.  But that's kinda like almost any show about drugs/cartels, double crossing, etc.

Understood. But there's a darkness (energy) that pervades these 2 shows. Just normal guys (people we can relate to), trying to play a minimal (hands off) part in the criminal underworld, going in deeper than they bargained for, glimmers of momentary hope... but you know it's going to end tragically. Delaying the inevitable. You don't feel good after an episode.... you tune in to see what the hell is going to happen next (the next new layer).

The only new angle I've seen so far is the introduction of the redneck mafia. lmao

Yep, very dark.

IMO, the main difference between the two is that Walter White ended up aspiring to be a cartel kingpin himself.  His ego grew massively and he felt he was getting his since he got screwed over by his partner at that one company.  He is the smartest guy in the room and wants to flex at all times.  Marty Byrde is a willing participant but you get the feeling that if he could find a moment to flee and disappear with his family he would.  His aspiration is to do his job, not get busted and keep his family safe.  Marty might be the smartest guy in the room but doesn't feel the need to flex at all times.  They both go deeper than they bargained for but in different directions with different goals.

I never said 'identical' 😛  I know what you're saying though...... and I agree completely.

And what about the 'Mike" (body guard) in Breaking Bad...... and the PI in Ozark. A little layover lol

Guilty pleasures:

- Fleabag (only 2 season in total);

- And if you dig that.... try Phoebe Waller-Bridge's other show "Crashing" (only 1 season total).

True, true.  Mike's one of the best characters ever, IMO.

You literally said: Ozark = Breaking Bad  lol 😜

Marty  is always looking for a way out to protect himself but more importantly his family. I get they are both dark but Marty is not the kingpin though. It is Missouri so redneck mafia...lol

2 + 4 = 5 + 1 😜

I still haven't gotten the feeling that Marty wants to get out. He's just trying to survive (he's living deadline to deadline)..... and if he were allowed to settle into a place and build... without a shot gun to the back of the head..... I'd wager he'd be pretty fine with returning to the previous arrangement. Still too early to tell though.

I've watched the first episode of Ozark so far, but I'm glad I read this thread so I don't waste my time with it. I hate watching shows where the characters are all ****ty people.

A show I was surprised at how much I liked is Man from Mobeen on netflix. It's a British show that's surprisingly hilarious and about a Muslim dude trying to get his life back together and look after his little sister and friends while getting away from his criminal past.

I would say you really need to watch 2 more episodes to see if this is for you. I was hooked after 3. Looking forward for season 4.

Man LIKE Mobeen...  Thanks for the heads-up, I'm definitely going to check it out.

So not really a 1 = 1 then. 😁

Basically, it is kinda like 1 but not really the exact thing as a 1. 😜

Nah, I'm good. I don't like shows like Breaking Bad, Narcos, and this one. A bunch of weak ass people doing ****ty things to other ****ty people.

Mike was cool in Breaking Bad, and while I know he is supposed to be younger in Better Call Saul, but he is just bad in Better Call Saul because of his real life age.  He looks like he is 99 years old and is supposed to be this tough guy.  It just completely falls flat and is not believable at all in that show.  There was one scene this past season that I literally face palmed at and LOL'd at because of just how unrealistic it was for this great great grandpa to do what he did.  He's also clearly talking much slower now simply because he's old AF.

And BCS is one of my favorite shows on TV too so definitely not hating.

Meh.

Man like Mobeen is more my speed or the 1st season of All American. If you have no character, I'm not ****ing with you.  Selling drugs and all that **** is boring and the same holds true for mafia movies. All the mobsters I knew in prison were whiny as **** and the MS-13 shot-caller I knew was sick from drugs, stuck doing life+90 and probably on his last legs already.

Gangsters are weak. **** them.

Except Ozark is not about selling drugs or drugs being the objective to make money. You are highly misinformed about the show then.

Didn't you just get into a back and forth a couple posts ago with someone about how it's just like or similar to breaking bad?

They are laundering money for a Drug Cartel and then have run-ins with heroin dealers in the first season. I really don't give a **** if it's the centerpiece of the show or tangential to it. It's still ****ty people doing ****ty things. Which is still a waste of my time.

Love both of those shows. I’m finding anything Phoebe Waller-Bridge writes, I want to watch.

Someone else said it is like Breaking Bad. I don't think so. Plus it is a lot better. The run in with poppy seed grower is that in their plan to open river boat casino and their land and permission gets in the way. I could tell you the whole thing but you could watch or, I guess in your case, not watch and it really doesn't matter to me.

As for, ****ty people doing ****ty things? It is just a show.... lol

I started watching because of Bateman. He is a really good actor and grew up watching his shows, his sister too.

But all is good.

I don't think Ozark is anything like Breaking Bad either.  People just make the comparison because they are both fantastic shows about family men that turn to the dark side.  And they both do it for very different reasons and the main characters are so very different.

i haven't seen previous seasons of penny dreadful, so decided to start with the current one and see what it was like---pretty good first episode plot-wise, great production and cast, and natalie dormer is impressive

If you ever get caught up on everything, check out Hollywood on Netflix. It's only 7 episodes, so it'll ony take you six months to watch it all. :ols:

I like Ozark because the story is compelling, but you’re not alone in feeling as you do.  I sometimes find it hard to finish a book or show if I find no character to care about.

they don’t have to be good people, but they at least have to be interesting and have a goal I can get onboard with.  If they’re just existing being ****ty, it becomes a chore.

Really enjoyed the first season of Upload. And hello, Andy Allo.

Also..about 1/2 through S2 of Dead to Me. Christina Applegate  deserves some recognition this year. Simply fantastic.
