Would this work?

What do you all think about this idea?

The Redskins have been putting their best corner (Champ) on the opponents best receiver. What if they put Champ on their #2 receiver and put Smoot on the #1 receiver with the safeties shifting over to Smoots side. Would this cause too much of a opening in the middle of the field? Does anyone have any ideas why this would be bad?

And before the a**holes get started ripping apart this thread. I am not second guessing anyone.

WTF? Hell no! what are you thinking man? For crying out loud! Yeeeeeeeeeesh. I mean really now. You think you're a coach no--------- ;):silly: Funny thing is, imagine what George Edwards and his crew go through every week trying to figure out defensive game plans for opposing offenses. Gotta figure that if not this game, at least some other time an assistant went "Cough er.... how about champ on the #2.........." or something like that. And of course a couple of hundred other questions and ideas based on 1st,2nd, and 3rd down tendencies and with so and so yards to go. Whew. Thinking that the Champ on # 1 with the occassional venture into zone or something is still a good idea. But then I'n not on Edwards staff......thank god for the Skins. :silly:

I dont know, this could work i guess. I think the reason we do it how we do it is because Smoot can go man to man against their #2 as Champ can against their #1. If we have two guys that can go one on one with the guy they are up against the frees up people like Lavar to blitz more often and other people to roam around and cover. There would be points in a game where we may not be able to shift a safety over to help smoot, if the safeties are occupied with other coverage.

However this could be worth a try, like not something to do all game, but maybe on a few plays in a game. It could cause the QB to not realize Champ is on the #2 guy and get them to throw it to his side which usually results in an INT, and it could cause QB's to see Smoot on the #1 and try and attack that before realizing the safety help over the top.

Im not presenting this idea with any specific game in mind. But some teams have a #1 and a close #2. With Champ on the #2 and Smoot on the #1 (with help from the safeties), both receivers could be shut down.

Skins26 hit it on the head. throw them for a loop and maybe get a little pick here or there.

You know, there are days that this just might work. During games, you play around with the players and who you have them on depending on whether they are on that day or not.

In the NFL, anything is possible on any given day. You don't count anything out as too absurd.

Dude how dare you. You are so damn rude to ask a question like that :)

Don't like the idea, though it makes sense. Seems that it's a given weakness to exploit all day. Though, we get exploited on Smoots side of the field a bit this year and any time Jimoh has been in the game

I'm thinking, as Edwards gets more comfortable calling games, we will increase the amount of man coverage used each week. As a rookie DC I think he's doing a good job now, and he will only get better.

Like a good fighter, once he lands a few heavy shots, he will gain confidence and throw more of them. Right now I think he's still more of a counterpuncher. He will soon become the aggressor. :D

Remember guys, that's basically what we did last season with Marvin Lewis's system. It didn't work that well last year. We didn't double team as much, but we also didn't have the safeties, so it might work better this season. However, I like the idea of blitzing more and keeping our corners in man coverage.

Nope

A healthy champ shuts down their number one and smoot cancels out the number two this allows the safety to assist on the TE and running back.

This will be the key sunday not smoot or champ but the guys covering the bucs TE and back out of the backfiled
