Family Sues NFL After Daughter Injured By Drunken Fan

POSTED: 8:18 a.m. EDT October 10, 2003

HACKENSACK, N.J. -- The parents of a 2-year-old girl paralyzed in an accident caused by a drunken football fan have sued the National Football League.

Ronald and Fazila Verni claim the NFL promotes the kind of behavior that led the fan to drink 14 beers at a New York Giants game and then drive home. (Discuss This Case)

The New Jersey residents first filed their suit in 2001, but refiled Thursday to include the NFL and its commissioner as defendants. The Giants, the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, and the fan are among the other defendants. He's been sentenced to five years in prison.

A lawyer for the Giants told The Record of Bergen County that it's a tragic incident, but the team and sports authority aren't to blame.

The NFL forbids beer sales after the third quarter. The Giants shut down beer vendors at the start of the third quarter.

Just people being greedy. It's like people who want to sue the gun companies.

I would sue the heck out of that a$$hole drunk though. I would make sure when he got out of prison he didn't have a pot to piss in.

Totally agree...

The drunk is responsible for his actions... the victim's family knows they can't get rich off of suing him so they go after the NFL so they can get rich. Isn't that great. People are just low.

I don't agree with a bartender being charged either. Unless the bartender ties up the person and forces alcohol down their throats, people are responsible for their own actions.

I see what you are saying though, that you try for what you can get because of your setback, I would just hope that the courts don't see it that way. Just because someone has come across misfortunes in their life, that's no excuse for making someone else responsible that shouldn't be.
