Our Schedule After the Bye Week

There has been a lot of talk about how our schedule gets easier after the bye week. Based on 2002 W/L percentages, the teams we play after the bye week have worse records than the ones we play before the bye. Here's how the 2003 schedule looks using 2002 W/L data:

Week TEAM W-L PCT

1 NYJ 9-7 0.563

2 ATL 9-6 0.600

3 NYG 10-6 0.625

4 NE 9-7 0.563

5 PHI 12-4 0.750

6 TAM 12-4 0.750

7 BUF 8-8 0.500

8 BYE

9 DAL 5-11 0.313

10 SEA 7-9 0.438

11 CAR 7-9 0.438

12 MIA 9-7 0.563

13 NO 9-7 0.563

14 NYG 10-6 0.625

15 DAL 5-11 0.313

16 CHI 4-12 0.250

17 PHI 12-4 0.750

Using the above 2002 data, the opposing teams before the bye week won 69 games and lost 42, a W/L percentage of 0.622. The teams after the bye won 68 and lost 76, a W/L percentage of 0.47. That makes it look like the games after the bye week are easier.

However, things change over the off-season. Based on the first 5 weeks of 2003, the numbers look different.

Week TEAM W-L PCT

1 NYJ 0-4 0.000

2 ATL 1-4 0.200

3 NYG 2-2 0.500

4 NE 3-2 0.600

5 PHI 2-2 0.500

6 TAM 2-2 0.500

7 BUF 3-2 0.600

8 BYE

9 DAL 3-1 0.750

10 SEA 3-1 0.750

11 CAR 4-0 1.000

12 MIA 3-1 0.750

13 NO 1-4 0.200

14 NYG 2-2 0.500

15 DAL 3-1 0.750

16 CHI 1-3 0.250

17 PHI 2-2 0.500

Using 2003 data, the opponents before the bye have a combined record of 13 wins and 18 losses, a W/L percentage of 0.42. The after-the-bye opponents have a combined 2003 record of 22 wins and 15 losses and a W/L percentage of 0.60.

So we really shouldn't be talking about an easier schedule after the bye week - it's probably tougher after the bye.

If we win 4 of the 7 remaining non-division games and 2 of the 4 remaining divisional games, we will be 9-7 for the year, which will probably not make the playoffs since we would be 2-4 in the division. In order to do better than that, we've got to step up our level of play and cut out the dumb mistakes, because we are just starting the tough part of the schedule. And the Bucs are probably p|ssed about last night's game.

MidPenn, thanks for that picker-upper....

Obviously you're off your medication. Remember to repeat the mantra, "We're having a really great season. Before the season, we thought the best we could be was 2-3 after five games, and we're 3-2. We're just a play or two away from being 5-0, in fact. And Dallas sucks, they haven't beaten anyone."

:40oz:

Nice work.

Hasn't this year's rash of injuries in preseason proved that we can't look down the road and count wins? There are two teams the rest of the way that appear confused and playing poorly, the Saints and the Bears (Who beat an old Raider team), but that's now..... let's wait until we get to them and see where they stand.
