Redskins' players blast Limbaugh for critical comments of McNabb

By PHIL SHERIDAN

Philadelphia Inquirer

ASHBURN, Va. - The players who will face Donovan McNabb on Sunday don't buy Rush Limbaugh's suggestion that the Eagles quarterback is overrated by the media.

"He's one of the top three or four quarterbacks in this league," Washington Redskins cornerback Fred Smoot said. "Rush, you don't know what you're talking about. I don't know what you're good at, but it isn't picking quarterbacks."

"Who is Rush Limbaugh to make a statement like that?" linebacker LaVar Arrington said. "He needs to stay in his area of expertise, because he's out of it. That's one of the most asinine comments a person could make."

Former Eagles middle linebacker Jeremiah Trotter was McNabb's teammate for three years. He played against him for the first time last September in a game the Eagles won, 37-7.

"He's one of the best," Trotter said. "He's a great player, and he's a great guy. I look at players as players, not by their color."

Limbaugh said that McNabb was "not that good" and is promoted by the media because the media want a "black quarterback to do well."

"There's ignorance in the world," Arrington said. "He's entitled to his opinion, but that just shows his IQ, at least when it comes to football."

"I didn't hear the (words) come out of his mouth," Washington defensive end Bruce Smith said. "If there is a race card being played here, we have a problem. Not just we as minorities, but all of us as citizens of the United States. If race is an issue, then we should have a problem with his choice of words and his thinking."

"McNabb gets a lot of credit because he's the focus of their offense," defensive back Champ Bailey said. "That would be true whether he was black or white. If the offense goes, then the quarterback goes. If they have success as a team, then the quarterback will get a lot of the credit. It's been that way for years."

Patrick Ramsey, the Redskins' second-year quarterback, didn't want to comment on Limbaugh directly.

"I don't know Donovan personally," Ramsey said, "but I'm sure he knows better than to listen to that."

I am just hoping this doesn't effect the game on Sunday. I don't want MC Nabb with a chip on his shoulders trying to prove Rush wrong and throwing for 300+ yards and running for 100 more. I also don't want our players taking it easy on him between whistles. If Lavar can get a good clean legal hit on him in the pocket or if he runs up field I want him to take that hit and not pull up short. I am now very worried about this game. Both teams really want this game and need this game. The Skins need to prove they can beat Philly and can't afford to go 0-2 in the division and Philly needs to get back to 500.

I have heard that Rush is in Philly right now. Can anyone confirm this? Is Espn doing there show from the parking lot at the link? Rush better not order any room service in his name at the hotel.

Hopefully this just blows over because I don't wanna read about it in the news everyday for the next year.

Agreed. BUT, I think more of the "thinking class" of this country needs to see things like this as much as possible. We as a country are letting our rights slip away from us EVERY day, and this is just a small example. Or one day we'll wake up and our society will be 100% gone to shi*.

Oh, yeah, and...........:eaglesuck

True. Freedom of speech is just a mirage. There's really no such thing in this country.

I thought it was very interesting that most of their comments focused on how Rush didn't know anything about football to make that comment. For the most part, they kept discussions about racism out of it, except for Bruce (who we know runs his mouth off at times).

"I didn't hear the (words) come out of his mouth," Washington defensive end Bruce Smith said. "If there is a race card being played here, we have a problem. The way I was reading what Bruce was stating was the fact that Rush's statement did kind of sound racist. Bruce said it in his first sentence, "I didn't hear the (words) come out of his mouth."

So I'm thinking he didn't take it as a race comment, but is just saying if it was, we have a problem.
