NFL.com: Robert Griffin III named NFC Player of the Week

Call it icing on the cake.

Washington Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week following his performance in a 40-32 win over the New Orleans Saints, the league announced Wednesday.

RG3 was poised in victory, completing 19 of 26 passes for 320 yards and two scores through the air. His first NFL touchdown has already spawned a viral Internet meme, and it appears the Redskins have an answer at quarterback for the first time in decades.

It wasn't perfect, but it was memorable. Griffin successfully guided Washington to an upset win before a hostile Superdome crowd. We saw RG3 attempt mostly short passes -- only two beyond 20 yards -- but that was coach Mike Shanahan's design from the start. Griffin kept mistakes to a minimum.

This was framed as a statement game for the Saints, burning up after an offseason that saw them heavily picked apart by critics in the face of the "bounty" scandal. Despite the subtext, New Orleans couldn't stop RG3 at home, and the rookie showed great calm in picking up his first win as a pro.

GRIFFIN III NAMED NFC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The National Football League announced today that Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III has been named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week for Week 1. He is the first Redskins player to win the award since Clinton Portis in Week 5 of the 2008 season and the first Redskins rookie to receive the honor since Rod Gardner in Week 6 of the 2001 season.

Griffin III, 22, was a nominee for Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week following his Week 1 performance against the New Orleans Saints, in which he led his team to a 40-32 road victory at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in his first career start. Griffin III — the first quarterback born in the 1990s to lead his team to a win — completed 19-of-26 passes for 320 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. In the process, he became the first player in NFL history to compile 300-plus passing yards, two or more passing touchdowns and no interceptions in an NFL debut.

His 320 passing yards were the second most by a rookie quarterback in Week 1 in NFL history, trailing only Carolina’s Cam Newton’s 422-yard performance last season and trumping 300-yard efforts by Indianapolis’ Andrew Luck (309 in 2012) and Peyton Manning (302 in 1998).

Sometimes there are exceptions to the rule, some players can handle the bravado. The consistent comments about tempering expectations are often individuals attempting to calm themselves down. How he will respond is evident in his character, the lack of faith is disturbing, and the disregard for any deviation from the norm in terms of expectations is equally as disturbing. The question should always be "why not?".

According to the Redskins twitter

'#Redskins @RGIII is 1st rookie QB to be named Offensive POTW on KO Weekend since award started in 1984.'

Thats Awesome, hope he can continue.

All I was looking for was consistency, I know he will make his mistakes, but pretty impressive starting debut. I will remember
