Should The Redskins Run Up The Score

Spurrier made a living out of running up the score on his opponents in college. From what I heard about him during this time, he didn't change his game plan much once he had a lead. Contrast that to what has been done this season with leads (most importantly Sunday vs. the Pats) and he, in addition to learning to be more consistent with the run, is learning the NFL coach mantra of "with the lead, just kill the clock". This works, of course, if you can move the ball effectively and get a couple 1st downs each drive before punting...something we were unable to do.

I say Spurrier should "dance with the one who brung ya" and keep with the gameplan UNTIL the Skins are up by AT LEAST 17 points with 1/2 of the 4th qtr. gone....MAYBE start at the beginning of the 4th IF the defense is dominating and getting pressure on the QB consistently.

I would love to see the Skins bury the Eagles, and stomp them into the ground.

What goes around comes around.

The Eagles crushed the 'skins twice last year. They didn't need to run up the score, in fact they held off. There is no real point to it. The losses were embarrassing enough.

To even suggest it smacks of extremely poor sportsmanship.

You see the Packers last night, they were up 15 in the 4th quarter and were passing the ball and taking chances. They scored another TD and that gave them a 22 point lead, no one mentioned that it was running up the score, they were protecting the lead! I say you do what works and if you are scoring then do it until the clock runs out!!

I would wait until it becomes an issue before I worry about it.

I don't think Spurrier was as concerned with running up the score on Sunday as he was with just protecting the lead.

Listening to him since Sunday, I think he's going to be less inclined to pull in the reins unless it gets to be very late in the game.

Agreed, SonnyJ. You never have to give up or change what you're doing. If a team is up by 35 in the 4th quarter, you're not a smart coach if you leave your starters in the game. You're just inviting disaster. When you put your 2nd and 3rd teams in and still continue to score, so be it.

Up by 14, you've got to keep trying to score with your game plan. If you go into a shell (Reid/Fassel) you can easily let the other team back in with quick 3 and outs.

There should be only one standing order to both offense and defense: Attack!

After this weekend, I'm not sure what might be a comfortable lead for our team. One thing that I am pretty certain of right now is that we're not very good at "protecting" a lead.

ST or defensive scores (or very short field opportunities, like two of our TDs) are about the only way any body will really blow anyone out in the NFL. Sometimes, you do get the other team with a lot of defensive breakdowns and come up with the 40+ yard TD but that's not usually going to happen enough.

Favre is also a veteran who has seen every defensive scheme ever, and is truly one of the greats....as is Manning.

Spurrier's concern was our own self-destruction. With the lower risk plays, the lower the possibilty of the game turning on us. It makes sense Rob. Plus, Ramsey was taking too many hits from that shifty 3-4 BB defense.

Later on in the year, we will see some domination from this offense. We're still working the kinks out.

HItman56, great quote. It's one I used last year, unfortunately that didn't seem to amp up our boys(as if they read message boards anyway)

Did you think of the other line from the movie when reading the thread title, "Run up the score, Herman. Leave no doubt."

That's what I want Steve to do, when the time is right--leave no doubt.

FWIW, I don't think anybody's claiming SS was holding the team back from scoring because he didn't want to embarass the Pats.

He stopped throwing because he figured the only way we could blow that lead was with turnovers.

To me, our game plan when we've got a lead is the same one that got the lead: Go where they ain't.

If the other guy's gonna stack 9 in the box, then make 'em respect our receivers. If he's blitzing your QB, then run the ball.

Face it, we ain't good enough to be chivalrous.
