Spurrier gave reason why so many runs

He said today on his radio show that Patrick got a few very clean hits and they didn't want to take the chance of that happening near the end of the game. Since they were up by so much and our defense was playing so well that they decided to try to run all the time off.

OBC said maybe they should have thrown it more but liked to keep running because Dockery is right now better at run blocking then pass blocking. The pats also gave the skins the run so they took advantage of it.

He was more upset about the not getting TD's in the redzone. The one thing he was very happy about and talked about was turnovers how he had none and they had four. He said for the season we have a + difference on turnovers and wants to keep it that way. Was impressed how Ramsey held onto the ball the couple of times he was hit.

On the sacks he blamed bad calls when the past blitzed, not the line. Said the line did very well just some plays they brought the house and the skins didn't have enough to protect.

We were never in the prevent but a deep cover two and didn't like the fact how fast the Pats scored. Jimoh was burnt on the same play just like Atlanta. That will be last time you see him in that situation. OBC wasn't too happy that John Hall had to make a TD saving tackle on a kickoff and wasn't too happy as well with the Barker punt at the end of game.

I really am starting to like Spurrier more and more. He's so not like Norv. He will actually take action when he doesn't like what is happening with his team. Gotta love that.

On another topic, do you like to watch girls kissing, skinsinsite? I would never know from your posts.

One thing I think that would really help the pass coverage on sure passing downs is having 2 wideouts and 2 split backs. I'm not sure that we've actually seen to much of this yet......but the great part about it is that it would give us quick protection for the WR and if the play breaks down, you have safety valves on both sides of the field. Plus I think Trung, and Ladell can both make as much happen on and after a catch as any of our WR except for say Coles.

Agreed,

That is the coaching lesson that needs to be learned.

Up by so much? Sure, at one point we were up by 17, but that was pretty early in the 2nd half. When they got within ten with a lot of time left, we really should have tried to move the ball more effectively. ....on the other side, we made a CRUCIAL 3rd and long conversion that the REFS took away....

I'm not that bright when it comes to football as far as what scheme is best for what, and so on and so on, but I was always of the belief that to play zone defense you need to have a good pass rush from your front four.

If the QB has all day to throw then playing zone is not going to work for your team.

I couldn't understand why we were playing zone against the Pats on Sunday. Brady had all day to throw and he was picking our zone defense apart.

With the supposed cover corners that we have why weren't we playing man to man?

Am I wrong on this? Please elighten me!

On the money, Nighthawk. If you're gonna play deep cover two for 20 minutes against a decent QB, you better have some guys up front who can get after him a bit. We clearly don't. Brady got into such a comfort zone he could stand in and look downfield with impunity.

Some teams can make the "prevent" work, or at least make it survive; teams like Tampa, for instance, and Philly before they lost their whole damn DL, because they can bring pressure with the down linemen.

Helps to have corners who excel in zone coverage, too. I don't think many here would disagree with the notion that the Redskins corners are far less effective in zone schemes than they are manning up.

I think Sunday was a good object lesson for George Edwards and SS ... this defense has shown it can be very solid when mixing coverages and bringing extra bodies from various angles to apply pressure. But Sunday (and against Altanta down the strecth) it has also shown itself to be pretty vulnerable if they abandon that aggressive approach and back off in deep cover two to try to "keep everything in front of them."

That we don't have a DL that excels in applying a pass rush is no secret to us ... and it's no secret to opposing teams, either. Hopefully, in future games where prudence dictates backing off at least a bit to protect a lead, to avoid the quick hit score against that can let a team back in quick, we can adopt a balanced approach that accounts for that by continuing to throw in the occasional blitz package, to, at the very least, keep guys like Brady from setting up a lounge chair back there.

The cover-two doesn't necessarily mean zone across the board. Some teams can run it with their CB's in man coverage.

Does anyone remember the last time we blitzed out of a nickel package on first down? I can't . . . we only seem to blitz out of our base defense.

This is a good point that Spurrier made...why should Ramsey continue to take these big hits when it's not necessary?

At one point in particular, I remember Ramsey taking a hit and CLUTCHING his sprained left shoulder...he looked in extreme pain.

Plus, Billechick is a defensive genuis, and is revered in this league. Ramsey was having a difficult game dicifering defensive schemes, etc. He's not used to reading a defense such as this. He even stated before the game that there was no way to prepare for all of the looks BB gives. It's a guessing game.

But flashback to week 3 vs. the Giants. The protection was there when we needed it, and the throws were there when we needed them. Their D is something that this team is a little more familiar with, just as the Eagles' D.

Ramsey played well last year w/ an inferior recieving core.

And how does a defense prepare for the redskin's offense? We run effectively, pass effectively, and screen/swing effectively to counter pressure. Teams try to rattle Ramsey, and he still makes the throws!

So what does a team do except disguise coverages? Sooner or later Ramsey will learn zones better...and then what?

Getting back to the point, the Skins played their offense the best way they could, and they won. Plain and simple...their gameplan worked. Billichick could not beat us.

The redskins have a very balanced attack.
