Jumbo
I thought it went - "If the dude's a bit odd, you make him a mod." My work is often paraphrased. :pfft: Usually in an improved fashion. ---------- Post added April-2nd-2012 at 11:54 AM ---------- I think I would have let it go, or treated it more like a joke, if it weren't the very first reply in this thread. The "why can't we have a white guys club?" attitude is a lazy opinion that I don't like to leave unrefuted. The older I get, I think the more I wear the meanie pants. Where I used to employ more eloquence and calm, controlled, and determined persuasive reason, these days I increasingly prefer the (Jethro) Gibbs technique
Teller
Spoken like a true scholar! :poke: I learnt all I e'er needs ta know from ES. (Which would explain a lot.) Seriously, there are no "white students" clubs in the US because there is no specific "white" experience (unless you think the point of a club is solely to exclude minorities.) The experiences are Irish, or German, or Jewish, or Southern, or New England, or Christian, or whatever - something more specific than just "white." Oh I understand that. As you know, I'm not a fan of hyphenation. My background is German, but I'm not into the whole leiderhosen (sp?) thing. I did play the tuba at one point, and I like beer. That's the extent of my celebration of my "heritage." But if other people want to hang out together because of similar background, more power to 'em. Corcaigh
It's hard to evaluate teachers on an absolute scale, but with classes full of high achieving students, teachers are certainly more free to go faster and explore more topics in depth than in an average NoVa high school. You're not going to be in a full-fledged multivariable calculus class at many NoVa public schools schools other than TJ. And you're not going to find an FT-IR or a microelectronics lab almost anywhere else. I really think that, for the vast majority of students, the positives outweigh the negatives (although there is a limit to how far kids can reasonably travel each day to go to high school). The view from out in Loudoun County, based on our experiences with TJ and with kids we know are certainly mixed. The Academy of Science here in LoCo may be doing a better job without some of the TJHS negatives, although some teachers and administrators from both places seem to have problems with ego. EDIT: and in my experience, kids taking multivariable calculus in high school don't find high school teaching much help at all. ---------- Post added April-2nd-2012 at 03:42 PM ---------- Waitaminnit? Forgetting the fact that the old hog would've said, "If one exclusionary group is wrong in a public school, so is another." And forgetting the fact that the old hog is right. And forgetting the fact that the old hog would have chosen this as a battle worth fighting. And forgetting the fact that the old hog wouldn't have voted for Obama. And forgetting the fact that the old hog would've said "Trayvon probably deserved it." And forgetting the fact that the new hog tried to keep a race thread light....yeah, you're right. Stadium-Armory
Why is there a Black Student Union at all? How am I supposed to look past the color of a person's skin if attention is constantly being called to it?I'm curious what would happen if all the white students formed a White Student Union .... I think there's a tendency for humans to 'band together' when they find them selves in a minority position (whether it be race or otherwise). "Whites" are the racial majority, so white people don't necessarily feel the need to have a "group" or understand the motives for minorities to have such groups. I think that these groups are healthy ways to explore, promote, and celebrate different cultures in a way that isn't divisive.
DCSaints_fan
EDIT: and in my experience, kids taking multivariable calculus in high school don't find high school teaching much help at all. I took MV calc. and linear algebra when I was at TJ. The class was taught by a PhD in math and he knew his stuff. We live in a three dimensional (ok, four dimensional) world, and I liked how finally with MV calc. we were able describe it mathematically ... Its the natural progression after calculus, it isn't really all that advanced or esoteric. A little less than half of us were taking calc. by our junior year, and most of us weren't brilliant. Even so, everyone benefits from good teachers ... even the brilliant.

elkabong82
It would be interesting to hear from a black student at TJ HS what they "go through". yes, because successful black students never face diversity or prejudice, especially not from other, less successful black students nor do they ever face "positive" stereotypes which are harmful as well. Just because a black student goes to a great school doesn't mean everyone knows it and treats them accordingly, and even if they do that still doesn't guarantee equal treatment either

Koala
Haha this is weird. Black student from TJ, graduated 99, go colonials (TJ - we came for the sports) I didnt have to go through anything at TJ, that I didnt have to have face in real life. ....Its just that there was like 5 of us...in an ocean of whites, jews, and asians...most were convinced that the 5 of us were in there because of affirmative action, so naturally we formed a group. Really it was just another "extra-curricular" activity to put on our college applications, and we gave ourselves important sounding positions; running BS unj-contested elections when there was like 5 of us in total. It was a hot mess. Im not surprised they have a white president, no it doesnt show some sort of evolution of our society. Its probably becuase the black kids there are too socially retarded to be given any kind of title, or the that white kid is blacker than the black kids. Im just tellin it like it is. dont get upset
