Sticksboi05
I don't think anyone is saying he's the GOAT simply based on numbers. Because of course Jerry Rice has #'s that arguably will never be topped. But Cy Young also has the most wins ever--by far. Doesn't mean he's the greatest pitcher ever. If you were starting a team today and could pick either prime Jerry Rice or prime Calvin Johnson, who would you go with? That's actually tough but I'll still go with the guy who proved he could come up huge in big games (Superbowls), caught 22 TDs in 14 games when defensive backs could actually play defense and was a productive receiver for almost two decades. Rice didn't rely on athleticism. What happens when Johnson eventually loses his athletic advantage? He's a smart receiver but Rice was a master. For one season, I'll take Johnson. MattFancy
Yes, you said he already easily might be the best ever. I'd love to see any proof he's had a better career than Jerry Rice. No, I said he is easily the best in the game, maybe the best ever. Sure his numbers aren't close to Rice right now, but by the end of his career, they could be comparable. Through their 1st 5 years: Rice: 6,364yds, 346 catches, 66 TDs Johnson: 5,872yds, 366 catches, 49 TDs Now remember who was throwing to Rice those 5 years as compared to who was throwing to CJ. BurntToast
A hundred and thirty-two million dollars...for catching a ball. I know, he's awesome. But a hundred and thirty-two million for catching a ball. I'm just trying to wrap my head aorund that. If the Lions didn't sign him to 132 million contract another team next year would have. terpskins10
you cant just "remove" Megatron tho. His impact on the field makes things easy for everyone else. Oh, I know. I'm just saying that he still played well by all accounts.
G.A.C.O.L.B.
Nope, Nate Burleson signed a mega contract based off that season tho. He was the Vikings leading receiver. Culpepper was just in the zone that year. Ah ok. So what happened to Culpepper? Injuries or did he just get lazy after getting paid? (Like so many guys do) That's actually tough but I'll still go with the guy who proved he could come up huge in big games (Superbowls), caught 22 TDs in 14 games when defensive backs could actually play defense and was a productive receiver for almost two decades. Rice didn't rely on athleticism. What happens when Johnson eventually loses his athletic advantage? He's a smart receiver but Rice was a master. For one season, I'll take Johnson. And that's completely fair. I just disagree. I think Johnson is more than just athletic. From all accounts he runs great routes, gets great seperation and works hard. And he's always going to be taller than everyone and have beastly hands. you cant just "remove" Megatron tho. His impact on the field makes things easy for everyone else. In saying that, Stafford is a really good QB. I dont get the hate on him anymore and I am someone who did not like him in college. Beat me to it. Johnson's mere presence changes the game. And I'm not hating on Stafford. I'm just wondering what he would look like with Johnson. Where he would rank. Obviously he wouldn't be throwing 40+ TD's, but would he still be a top 10 QB if he had, say, Miles Austin instead of Johnson?
AsiaticSkinsFan
Ah ok. So what happened to Culpepper? Injuries or did he just get lazy after getting paid? (Like so many guys do) well they had the "Love Boat" scandal that summer, iirc. He came into the season playing horribly, and then he shredded his knee early in the season. Tore 3 ligaments in his knee and was never the same player again. Beat me to it. Johnson's mere presence changes the game. And I'm not hating on Stafford. Da_Truth
Yes, Calvin Johnson is a beast at WR but he doesnt got Randy Moss yet. Randy Moss in his prime was a freak of nature, you could double cover him and he will still out run the safety and corner with ease. I dont know if anyone would ever top Randy Moss as far as being a beast at WR. But Calvin Johnson is no doubt 2nd.

G.A.C.O.L.B.
st? Sean Taylor is the only thing I can think of. As far as Moss vs Megatron goes: Imagine Megatron with Cris Carter opposite him? Imagine Megatron with prime-Tom Brady throwing him the ball? I'm a big Moss believer and he was absolutely amazing, but again, I think Calvin Johnson is the most talented WR to ever play football. Renegade7
Most talented. Difference. Look, I'm intentionally not quoting anyone because I don't feel like getting into a debate about this, I'm tired, and it would be a ridiculously frustrating argument. I am reading this thread, tho, so you don't have to get defensive with me.

I think it's probably past time you changed out your tampon. Don't post on a message board if you don't want people to respond. Anyway, I'm not saying he's the best ever. That's clearly Jerry Rice--and it's not even close. I do however think Calvin Johnson is the most talented ever. Simple as that. Perhaps one day, barring injuries, he passes Rice as the GOAT. Who knows. I think he definitely has the ability to do so.

Moss' best statistical season came in Minnesota with Moe Williams and Jim Kleinsasser as the next two leading recievers. Nate Burleson was the next best WR that season for them with only 29 catches Randy Moss was the most talented football player most of us will ever see. He has better hands than Calvin which is the big difference to me, altho Calvin is the better athlete considering that he is 240 lbs.

I mean, he may very well, but that's completely subjective. I think Calvin Johnson has monster hands. And if you want to talk about putting up beastly numbers with ****ty supporting casts: See Lions, 2008. The 0-16 Lions. With a a leading rusher of 238 yards. With starting QB Dan Orlovsky. I figured your post was partially directed at me since I've been the main person claiming Johnson is up there in talent. I just cleared up my position: that I don't think he's the best ever, just the most talented ever. You went on some boo hoo mini rant about me getting defensive and you being all moody and tired. The way he uses his body to shield DBs is should taught in every HS school in America. He also ridiculously intelligent on the football field. and I also did not use Moss' 2003 season to diss Calvin Johnson. I responded to the poster who suggested Moss had it a bit easier with Cris Carter. Moss' best season came without Cris Carter in Minny.
